I’m going in on Monday for my “first sip and on boarding” and I’m nervous! Any words of advice? I’m very excited to start I just have ~anxiety~

Remember in the stressful moments that it’s just coffee. At the end of the day, it’s just coffee and everyone will be okay.

Definitely don’t let anybody make you feel bad for simple mistakes and if customers give you a hard time at any point just calmly let them know you are new and trying to learn everything. Ask questions if you don’t understand something, don’t worry about appearances like looking dumb or anything like that. Trust yourself and I agree with the first comment, partner bonds make everything so much better. Helping a partner through a rush when you’re just a green bean goes a long way toward good work environment in the future. Just remember everyone has gone through it, some partners who seem like they’ve been there a long time might only be a few months ahead of you ! It definitely gives you hope !!

Honestly, just let it come to you. Anxiety, obviously, will never go away. However, after each day passes, you’ll learn more and more and more about your craft, while also soaking in the sucky parts. having a bond with other partners over things like anxiety and other problems is the one of the only reasons a lot of baristas really like this job, other than amazing regulars and ofc some of the benefits. So, with that, i know you’ll do well, be safe!

Barista trainer here! My advice to you is to remember that it takes time to learn! I know it can be stressful when you’re in the moment and expected to do tasks that you were only quickly trained on, but you’ll get it! Don’t be afraid to ask questions (and don’t let anyone make you feel bad for doing so). We’ve all been there, so there should be people who’ll answer your questions. It’ll come to you. And when you leave the store, try not to overthink things that you did wrong or you think you screwed up. It’s just coffee. It’ll be okay. And you’ll be okay! Good luck, friend! You’ve got this!

We know how you feel. I think everyone’s a little nervous starting out, I know I was. It’s going to take time to get comfortable but it’s worth it. It doesn’t hurt to try to memorize drink recipes but focus more on the process and “rules” (how many shots and pumps of syrup in which size drink) and routines than the recipes themselves. You’ll learn the regulars orders and the most popular drinks at your store the more you’re on bar. One day it’s just going to click and you’re going to be great.
