From what Ive been told, the new Mastrena machines cost $12-17,000 EACH. Yet we're still using the same dinosaur point of sale OS that doesnt even allow us to take tips through card transactions.(self.starbucksbaristas)

I go to a local coffee shop. Pay for my drink. They spin the tablet around. Im presented with tip options. This whole setup probably cost the coffee shop a few hundred dollars. This also nets the employees at least $2 extra per hour, but often gets them more than $6-8/hour in tips.
Starbucks has been spending all this money developing their garbage application. And after YEARS of it being out, these idiots are just now realizing that they shouldnt limit people to earning rewards only through money they already have loaded on the app.
I started to wonder why they're so technologically behind, but paying Mastrena millions of dollars for these fancy espresso machines.
Then I realized it took these dumbasses this long to realize they should let people be able to earn points without having to load money onto their starbucks account.
If they actually invested into a proper POS system that allowed us to accept tips through the app, we could be making more money. If they can afford to contract Mastrena to make them custom espresso machines, why the hell havent they setup a deal to have tablets made to run a simple point of sale system that allows us to accept tips? A point of sale system doesnt need that much hardware.
TL;DR Starfucks paid millions of dollars for fancy espresso machines while ignoring that we still use an ancient point of sale system that greatly limits our earning potential.

It benefits Starbucks to keep our tips low.
If all hourly partners made $5 more per hour, none of us would be starving enough to think promoting to supervisor is worth the <$2 pay raise.
Critical50 [OP]37 points2y ago
Lol once anyone in my store finds out they have all that work to do + being held accountable for just about everything that goes on for a whole $2 more they dont want that shit
dodofishman11 points2y ago
Make sure everyone knows tbh, we gotta talk about it
Critical50 [OP]26 points2y ago
Nah.
We should all go to local coffee shops. Starbucks claims they help farmers out, but when I dig into the details more it seems they lie.
The quality of their coffee compared to other roasters Ive been ordering from is huge. Something isnt right there.
They also prioritize the weirdest things. As I said, they spent millions of dollars on these mastrena machines. Or, about $30K per store. But they dont invest anything into their employees income.
Just leave and cripple this awful company.
Dunkin Donuts will actually pay you more than them. But people talk about DD like they're a shit company. I also would get a cup of black coffee from DD over Sbux. It doesnt make me think of cigs and charcoal when I drink it.

Good lord thank you. I’ve only been working at Starbucks for a year and their “pledges” to lower plastic use, water, whatever else is such BS! I mean my store doesn’t even recycle! I even asked my store manager about it and all they said was: Oh, well Starbucks is in the works of trying it out in different stores still. I’m like wtf okay then. Didn’t know it was that complicated to recycle. But anyway, I am on board with you.

They used to invest in employees. Employee health and wellness used to be a big focus to Starbucks, they were set up that way. But now they are a ginormous corporation that values profit above all. When you hear how working at Starbucks is an awesome thing, it used to be.
merikkdraws9 points2y ago
I’ve worked for DD and it was much worse that Starbucks, tbh. Starting wage there was $7.75, here it’s $9.75. No benefits offered there. Granted this is in SC so idk if it’s different where you live, but my coworkers that have also worked for DD were also underpaid & overworked.
Not that here’s much better, but DD is definitely the worst place I’ve ever worked.

Don’t forget, the machines are giant pieces of absolute SHIT that never work and constantly need maintenance and are perpetually dirty because we can’t properly clean them due to how shittily they’re built. But no tips on credit cards/registers because that’s just too much bookkeeping/taxes
Critical50 [OP]16 points2y ago
Lol one has already needed servicing and the other one has been making odd noises that sound like things grinding.
Our maintenance guy is also annoying.
"Yeah the machine seems to work. Not much left to do.. so how you been? Whats up man?"
-Our maintenance guy while squatting down with an entire fridge pulled out during our rush hour while he was working on the machine

Those iPad register work great for small coffee shops. However starbucks has thousands of stores. Registers are connected to our IMS system, corporate, partner mark outs, sales reports, BOH metrics, etc. It will take some serious money and time to redo the whole system since it’s all connected. Changing servers, the actual PoS system, reconnecting everything to main servers at corporate, will take months. And they would have to do all stores about the same time so we don’t have certain areas on one system and others on other.
I’m not saying it shouldn’t be done. I’m saying it’s not as easy as one might think. However, my friend who works at corporate did tell me they are working on some things in regards to POS.
vkapadia18 points2y ago
Thank you. I work at corporate. Used to be on POS, on a different team now. They are working on things, but it's a huge change with a lot of moving parts, just changing an espresso machine is much simpler. Good things are coming hopefully soon.

I feel you. POS is so interconnected with so much and so convoluted. The release schedule is so long, takes forever to get through QA. We're slowly offloading things to the SPC, should make things better.
is_it_soy28 points2y ago
Here’s the reason why: Tips don’t earn money for Starbucks Corporate. Why would they invest in technology to help baristas if it will earn them nothing? That’s the bottom line. If it doesn’t fill their pockets, it’s not a priority.
spiderhenchman9 points2y ago
Also on the Starbucks app you have to go back into the app on a SEPARATE window, which is not obvious or even noticeable mind you, to give tips
vkapadia11 points2y ago
I get a notification I can tap once to give a tip.
spiderhenchman4 points2y ago
Oh that’s good to hear, the last time I used the app it was an absolute pain in the ass to give my partners tips
vkapadia2 points2y ago
I've never tipped before, now I tip every time. So easy, they give 50 cent increments up to $2.
onlygirloffour4 points2y ago
Those machines take forever to clean and I hate it
sweetangel6222 points2y ago
I don’t like the steaming wand
Al-Anon2 points2y ago
As much as this would make sense, because of the fact that Starbucks needs to be standardized around the world, buying brand new POS systems for every store worldwide is a very very costly affair. Plus the current POSs haven’t depreciated enough for them to imminently replaced and thus it doesn’t make sense to spend the money right this moment
lemonjuicepulp1 points2y ago
My main issue involving the mastrena2 is that every single time we have ever had someone come in to fix it, they just get on their phones and watch a YOUTUBE TUTORIAL. I’m assuming it’s because they never actually trained anyone on how to work on a machine that’s essentially fully automated.
Simplyroro1 points2y ago
You have no idea how much of a pain in the ass it was 10 yrs ago when we shifted from what we had to the current symphony. I appreciate all your forethought, it wasn't as far reaching as it needs to be because, being the giant company we are means that POS systems are all interconnected with inventory management, profit and loss, basically everything.
Small coffee shops can use simpler systems. We simply can NOT.
