When you’re the closer and the opener the next day. Me tonight: I’ll do it tomorrow. Me tomorrow: Who left the.. oh right
writer_savant31 points2y ago
Oh yes. I remember those days... Also, clopins are the absolute worst.
cody_1849120 points2y ago
And then night crew gets yelled at for a speck of dust on bar the next day....
is_it_soy99 points2y ago
Openers be like “I’ve had to stare at the same smudge all day yesterday AND today!”
Closer: “Then why don’t YOU clean it?”
Opener: “That’s not my job”
Closer: 🤨😠😡
cody_184943 points2y ago
Right?! Like morning can handle that. At the end of the night I’ve got a shit ton of things to do while also taking care of customers and only having two partners when closing. Like morning and mid get 5 people on the floor and don’t deal with happy hours and shit. Smdh
is_it_soy37 points2y ago
What I hated was that *some* openers forget that they have to clean too. Closers aren’t Cinderella. Y’all need to contribute too.
ecliptxcenpi0 points2y ago
forever grateful to our openers who cleaned up the remains of the cinnamon fight one of our closing groups had 🥰
LilKaySigs32 points2y ago
“Well it’s also not my job to do morning and midday tasks but you don’t see me fucking complaining do you?????!!!!!”
proletarithot4 points2y ago
I’ve thought that so many times. Usually I DID just clean it up, but once I decided to wait and see if anyone in the AM would pick up trash under the desk they sat at to clock in every morning.
They didn’t. I picked it up.
SSFF6B41 points2y ago
Excuse me, but there was an unmelted ice cube in the ice bin this morning. Night crew does NOTHING!
Avuneon2 points2y ago
My manager has our closers fill the ice bins for the morning crew...
jacob_slovak [OP]10 points2y ago
Exactly!!!
BeerCat9473 points2y ago
Openers and mids be like: “Working at Starbucks is fun!!!”
mamma_burrito7 points2y ago
No joke I’ve worked here about a year and mostly was an open/mid shift. I only closed one night a week. Now all I do is close and I fucking haaaaatttttteeeeee it 😂
BeerCat944 points2y ago
I love my closing crew and I’m a nightowl so it works, but GOD does the store get messy during the day.
YellowSphinx44 points2y ago
I wish I could’ve worked with some of the people on here 😅 when I worked at Starbucks I was an opener. I cleaned everything and stocked everything. Every morning I came in it was like a wasteland. one of my coworkers even openly said to me “I’m glad you’re here, that means I don’t have to do anything” but don’t worry y’all. She’s still alive. my customers used to tel me that they knew when I was working because they could smell the bleach and it physically looked cleaner.. I don’t miss it 😁
meowbands6 points2y ago
Y’all?? Used?? BLEACH? How
Remi-Chan7 points2y ago
There's bleach in the restroom cleaner
King_Spamula5 points2y ago
Possibly the stuff we use to clean the grates/filters in the floors or restroom cleaner
YellowSphinx1 points2y ago
It was block whitener but yeah
hopelovepeace3323 points2y ago
What is it with the pettiness of night crew towards day crew? We stock up, make backup’s, clean up when peak is finally over even though sometimes it never ends, all while literally dealing with customers constantly. Like I get it some shit isn’t going to get done because it gets missed or over looked due to getting busy but stuff that’s being said by a shift is just observations not the end of the world to where you need to be petty towards an entire shift of people. How about we all communicate with each other & act like adults instead of being petty towards one another.
VentiEggBite24 points2y ago
This is more so about unrealistic expectations of closers i.e. floors being spotless throughout the whole store even though BOH and bar floors are a midday task, mats being cleaned on a non clean play night, full backup cabinet of everything, repeat ad nauseam. We don’t walk into a spotless store most days; it isn’t reasonable for openers to expect that all the time. A clean and reasonably stocked store? Absolutely reasonable.
hecaete478 points2y ago
I mean, I envy whoever is working at these stores where closers actually do their jobs apparently. The other day, closing shift left us gunk in the wet sani towel containers that are used for the steaming wands, gunk on the counters, trash all over the floors, etc. And they had a full staff according to the opening ssv, whereas we were close to almost having been down an opener if I hadn't volunteered to come in early :/ At this point I think they're just being petty because we keep getting call-outs for morning shifts & stuck trying to do everything on not even a skeleton crew, but a single bone's worth.
hopelovepeace333 points2y ago
Yea my store for morning shifts has been down one partner for like two weeks on top of having other partners calling out. So for most shifts we could barely make our peak time let alone get anything else done but we all killed ourselves to get things done so the evening shift would have some of the things done & they wouldn’t have to worry about it.
hopelovepeace336 points2y ago
I never expect to walk into a immaculately cleaned store unless it’s opening day of a brand new store & I don’t believe that anyone else does either. Now I don’t feel that’s it’s to much to ask that dishes be washed up and ready for the morning and that syrups like reg mocha, white mocha, pumpkin, chia, be on the hot/cold bar with one backup as well as a frapp roast, those aren’t unreasonable nor unrealistic expectations those should just be a common thing to have for morning & night shifts. I get all stores are different & environments are completely different then my store but the day crew/night crew hating each other is ridiculous & petty. We are all work out asses off & are busy no matter what time of day that it is, we shouldn’t have any sort of unrealistic expectations of either shifts, but there are little things that should be done like the things I mentioned that should be done.
jacob_slovak [OP]10 points2y ago
For me personally I tend to close a lot, and we are always understaffed. Our morning crew ALWAYS has an extra person, so it just irks me when I get there and they’re already gone or didn’t help stock before they left and stuff like that. My store gets very busy at night too, so it’s normally one person on orders and one person on bar, so we end up trying to get out on time or staying extra late to get everything complete. And either way we get complaints. There are definitely some days when the morning crew is very great and helpful, it just seems more often than not they want to get there to a clean store with everything prepped and leave without prepping for us. That’s my experience at least.
CalifasBarista6 points2y ago
Word this was my exact experience when I was a shift sup at sbux.
hopelovepeace333 points2y ago
My store is the exact opposite, we tend to have customers from the moment we open to at least 11 or 12 & some days we literally have them constantly to where me & my partners are getting orders done along with stocking. We always do our best & bust our ass to help customers along with stocking up & making sure we’ve got stuff setup for the evening staff, we don’t get everything but we do our best. All of this is just a matter of communicating well with your evening shift partners & not being petty about it. Where I’m at it’s only one shift who likes to create the drama between day/night shift & he’s one of the shifts who likes to sit in the back or out in the cafe like I’ve witnessed multiple times & claims he does stuff which therefore makes the closing staff think they don’t have to do much either which leaves the morning shift kind of screwed cause on the following days after his closings the store isn’t stocked there are zero backups and pitchers and spoons aren’t even cleaned or things have been left in the sink or the sanitizer washer. In my opinion people just need to communicate better or for lack of a better way to say it without sounding mean LIKE THE ADULTS WE ARE INSTEAD OF CHILDREN. I don’t care if a shift is 18 or if they are much older we can all communicate with each other about our needs without complaining and making things out to be like the night crew hates the day crew and vice versa because it’s extremely childish.
reynalu4 points2y ago
whats with the pettiness of morning crew towards night crew though... and it must be nice that your morning crew actually works unlike at my store
MetaphysMess12 points2y ago
I am the opener four of the seven days of the week currently, and my shift occasionally runs long enough to pass the closers on the way out. I've been with the Bucks for going on seventeen months and I've been opening roughly half that time. I have to say, I feel that the COVID chaos drove away a lot of our most valued partners, many of them closers. The veterans that were left (with a few exceptions) got moved to morning crew during lockdown, prompting a wave of new hires that didn't get to experience what the store was like pre-COVID and the expectations that some of the more tenured partners have. It doesn't help that almost all the closers at my store are highschoolers or fresh out of HS, with little to no previous work experience. To be honest, tensions in my store have been high lately - between the SSVs, between partners and customers, between our SM and the other SMs in the district.. and to top it all off, our closing SSV was fired two weeks ago for reasons most of us will never be privy to. It's a hectic landscape for sure. Keep your heads up though, be kind to your partners - we're all in this together.
dodofishman2 points2y ago
I'm a closer but in a similar situation. Luckily, it's getting better. Hopefully things start changing for you guys soon
lewabwee6 points2y ago
I’m really grateful my store has a good morning and night crew. Its not perfect but I don’t feel like I’m being taken advantage of by anyone.
[deleted]6 points2y ago
All I want is enough sweet cream and sauce to get me through pumpkin madness that is peak. I'll clean all the things! I swear.
HGoddess885 points2y ago
As the main opening shift, I will set up the night crew THE BEST I can! I wouldn’t want them leaving a shit show for opening, so we do the most we can before they come in to close. Prep, mop, clean the middle section, whatever we can do. I hate the stigma of openers and closers not getting along or helping out
sholbyy5 points2y ago
My favorite thing is when there’d be a situation where an opener SS would have to close for whatever reason, and they’d literally not wanna do or clean anything, yet when they open they’re always the one bitching about a single coffee bean being found under the brewer or some shit.
[deleted]1 points2y ago
Lmao there is the opposite at my store. One of the closing shifts is upset that they are expected to clean a lot at night while it seems like the morning crew doesn’t do anything so the SSV team came to an agreement about what should be cleaned at what time of day. A week later that SSV was a mid and I was closing and I asked them what they were able to clean they said “um.... nothing, but I saw someone wipe down a fridge so there is that”
goddamnlizardkingg5 points2y ago
& morning shift still talks shit allllllll damn day about us not putting 47 straws (exactly) in the container at drive i stg
meloscav5 points2y ago
TODAY. And then as soon as we came in the system BROKE so its cash only today
BeerCat942 points2y ago
Jesus. The worst nightmare during COVID.
MrBalderus5 points2y ago
This is both me and me.
nihilisticbabygirl4 points2y ago
during my last week i came in for open at 4am to the cold bar sink clogged with water, strawberry açaí juice, inclusions, and who the hell knows what else. 12 inches deep. only took me about 5 min to unclog, just wish it wasnt sat there over night :/ made our already existing ant problem worse
[deleted]2 points2y ago
I’ve come in multiple times to the dish room being flooded with water because the Hobart overflowed and a note saying “Hobart is broken :(“ does no one in this store know how to clean out a clogged filter?

At one point the mocha pumps at my store were acting up and leaking. One day I can in and they complained to us about mocha being all over the counters. Also I feel the pain for all the closer comments. I close at my store since it is more friendly with my school schedule and we consistently get handed a crappy shift. Backups are bare dishes haven’t been done all day, a trash run hasn’t been done all day cold bar pumps are broken.... Sometimes it is the coverage but most of the time it isn’t it’s poor people placing by our shifts. One of my shifts just started listing every single task we do at night in the book for the morning shift to see and it started to put it into perspective. Since doing that(for on particular partner) we have received very few complaints from the openers.
rosegoldhiips1 points2y ago
oh... that's a really good idea omg? i think i might reccomend that to both my opening shifts and closing shifts because they both think the others do nothing at all and i work opens, mids, and closings so i know what goes down during each shift and it really breaks my heart to see openers and closers at each others throats 😞
Koalastars0092 points2y ago
Yup... I’m perfectly fine once I get in and get to work. It’s getting up and ready that’s the hard part.
LeiyoZynne2 points2y ago
Almost everyday a shit ton is left for me and my crew. Everyday I come in and dishes are left, trash is piled up in the front and back, fridges aren't stocked, it's always several things everyday. Then we're expected to make closes perfect while they leave us with less than minimum to close nicely :/
raptoraptorr2 points2y ago
I love when this happens bcs then the openers come in at 4am to no prep either 😂 it’s a two way street ❤️
dayahorne1 points2y ago
I feel this shit in my soul
asst2therglmgr1 points2y ago
Ive worked at MANY different stores and the mornings are always far busier than the evenings save for a couple of anomalies.
asst2therglmgr1 points2y ago
Neither crew ever thinks the other did a good job.🤷🏻♂️
Peebles461 points2y ago
Nah it’s the mids
jacob_slovak [OP]1 points2y ago
You’re right, my store has been on block schedule for a while so they’re currently one in the same for me 😂
28_stab_wounds_11 points2y ago
my store is extremely busy and usually has a call in every other day. We typically don’t have the time necessary, or the people to prep things. It bothers me too because I hate to feel like we’re screwing over night shift, but I can’t even train new green beans properly because it’s always so hectic in the morning.
jacob_slovak [OP]2 points2y ago
We’ve been having a lot of call ins during my closing shifts too. I think it’s just rough all around right now
different_as_can_be1 points2y ago
this happened the other day on international coffee day. came in for night shift. all the back ups were made, so that was nice. but all of our fridges were empty, no cups, no ice, no lids. nothing. like that’s the easy stuff. that’s what gets under my skin.
matroid210 points2y ago
One of our night shifts just started opening. I have never walked onto a close and felt more prepared than I did the first time I worked after they switched. And it felt so good knowing for a fact that all the other morning shifts were full of crap about how they just “don’t have time” to prep for us. Like, this legend had made us backups, there were no dishes in the back, one toddy was done and the other like just needed water, syrups were stocked, the hoppers were full, everything was ready. Meanwhile the other morning shifts can’t be assed to even stock milks.
AvoFromCado0 points2y ago
I was strictly a closer for a year and then an opener for a few months and I have so much respect for each side. I also learned all of the things I did that annoyed the openers 😅😅
SuperSmashMyButtHole0 points2y ago
I work the night shift as a barista and it's just me and the supervisor, livid does not describe it when one of the day shift says something isn't done.
The day shift are all bitchy students who don't clean at all on shift unless the spill something monumental everything they do is bare minimum and you won't see them doing something without being told to do it.
They get 3 to 6 people on a shift when all they have to do is general wiping light mopping serve customers and buss.
The nightshift is expected to run everything as normal (drive through and cafe) while doing everything else like taking apart the machines for cleaning restocking everything putting away the stock that sometimes comes early and the manager leaves for us which can sometimes be immense, one time they ordered over 200 muffins alone by accident, and its literally me and one other person expected to do it all, the old manager used to make us stay until everything was completed but he got let go for stealing.
I would love to watch them have do nightshift clean the toilets on a night where its common people will piss against the walls or even, and this one shocked me, a whole crap on the tiled floor, directly infront of the toilet.
VENT.
