My manager made a drink she saw off of tik tok/instagram, and didn’t tell us see the ingredients until after we drank it.
She had put something I am very allergic to in the drink, so I had to run home and back for my medication.
Afterwards, I was informed that I wasn’t going to be paid for literally being poisoned, and that my manager was talking sh*t the entire time I was gone because she eats stuff she’s allergic to even if it closes her throat.
Is there anything I can do? Should I report this behavior? I have 3 witnesses to her talking sh*t.
Small edit: This is a temp manager. Our original manager had to leave for medical reasons and is returning sometime in the next 2 months.
Edit 2: I don’t want to sue, but based on the advice I will definitely take it up with Partner Resources and/or my DM. Thank you for all of your great advice!
Another little piece of info just in case it’s mentioned: My manager legit told us to look away as she was making the drink, and I trusted her not to put the ingredient I was allergic to inside of it, as she was there the first time I had a bad reaction to it.
FINAL EDIT SINCE IT’S BEING BROUGHT UP A LOT: I already admitted in the comments that I should’ve pressed my manager for more information on what was in the drink. I’m just barely starting out on adulthood, and trusted my manager to remember my allergy as stated in EDIT 2. Obviously trusting her was a mistake, because I paid the price. I’ll learn next time.
The only behavior I’m really concerned with is how my manager was sh*t talking behind my back as soon as I left, and to my friends no less.

Call corporate and transfer out
GingerMic [OP]81 points2y ago
This might actually work... another store opened up like 2 minutes from my house.
Arianasagapo103 points2y ago
Report her. She’s so wrong & who cares if she does it to herself. She’s probably not severely allergic to whatever it is & she obviously doesn’t care about you or your wellbeing. You need to call Partner resources and say you felt personally threatened/ attacked by her for doing that.
GingerMic [OP]34 points2y ago
She definitely seems to care more about sales and stuff then actually making starbucks a friendly atmosphere for everyone, especially for us closers. Don’t get me started there. I’ll see if I can email/call Partner resources.
Arianasagapo9 points2y ago
Please do. That’s not fair to you. You shouldn’t have to work with a person like that.
ladycali8717 points2y ago
I don't know how people can make light of allergies if they have them. I have two, one is life threatening (olives and olive oil) and one that's a minor inconvenience (avocados and their oil) but I always take things serious when someone brings up an allergy of theirs.
0x52and1x523 points2y ago
I also have the avo allergy ): They're so worth the temporary discomfort though haha
ladycali873 points2y ago
Everyone says that, and looks very concerned for me, saying you poor thing. I'm over here saving money on my Chipotle bowl cause when I did try it I didn't care for it. I would pay not to be allergic to olive oil because it's in soooo much. I spend so much time looking at ingredients in food and hygiene/beauty products because I can't even touch it either.
is_it_soy61 points2y ago
This is why when people would ask me to make them “surprise drinks”, the first thing I ask is “are you allergic to anything?”
Literally the #1 priority of any food service worker, ESPECIALLY A MANAGER, should be **food safety** which includes being mindful of allergies.
GingerMic [OP]12 points2y ago
Exactly! Whenever people say they’re allergic to something, I pull out the food/drink cards to make sure none of the ingredients will harm them! One boy was allergic to something I can’t remember, and wanted a cake pop. I skimmed through and realized that this cake pop had their allergy, so I warned the boys parents that he shouldn’t have it because it might give him a reaction.
EuniceBKidden5 points2y ago
We just won't make surprise me drinks at all. Yeah, it's a party pooper attitude but I'd rather that than having someone potentially be harmed because they didn't mention an allergy or intolerance.
is_it_soy5 points2y ago
I only ever made surprise drinks for friends and my cool regulars.
Webshooter3840 points2y ago
When you talk to corporate, maybe ask them what would've happened if you were a customer and your manager gave them something they were allergic to.
GingerMic [OP]17 points2y ago
EXCELLENT IDEA. I was just thinking of how to format my complaint, thanks for this!
Webshooter386 points2y ago
Good luck! Hopefully you get someone in a good mood
asst2therglmgr-8 points2y ago
How would the manager know they were allergic?
Webshooter385 points2y ago
It's something you should check before handing off to a guest (or anyone) if you make them a drink without telling them what's in it. If you do happen to give someone an allergic reaction, you should do everything you can to make sure they're okay. Not withhold pay for an accident that happened on both company property and time.
asst2therglmgr-9 points2y ago
In what possible scenario would you EVER hand out a drink to a customer with ingredients they didn’t ask for? I already agreed that the situation was handled poorly by the manager but accusing them of POISONING someone? That is outrageous.
Webshooter385 points2y ago
OP didn't order the drink. The manager made them a mystery drink and didn't tell them what was in it. OP even said the manager told them to look away while making it.
I'm not accusing the manager of poisoning someone. Accidents happen, but you don't act like giving someone an allergic reaction is a joke.
_Pulltab_15 points2y ago
She shouldn’t be talking shit about you and probably should pay you because it’s the decent thing to do.
But seriously, if you are that allergic to something that you urgently need medication then why aren’t you carrying that medication with you and why would you drink something made at a place that has ingredients you’re allergic to and not ask what’s in it before you drank it?
GingerMic [OP]14 points2y ago
1. Just ran out of the medication in my bag. 2. This ingredient is not part of most drinks at the store. 3. Slipped my mind, and I admit it was stupid of me not to press my manager for the ingredients. I’ve never been a confrontational person.
SchemingPancake6 points2y ago
If your manager knew you had an allergy, and you thought you could trust her, this isn’t on you. Report this for sure!
amv29261 points2y ago
what ingredient is it? you definitely don’t have to say and it doesn’t matter, i’m just curious
GingerMic [OP]1 points2y ago
I am very allergic to pumpkin. She had us try all the drinks so we could show them to customers at the beginning of the season, and that’s also when i had my first bad reaction to it.
4filth7 points2y ago
It feels like you’re trying to minimize the manager’s actions here, which is very weird
GingerMic [OP]2 points2y ago
It’s probably due to the way I was raised tbh. I was raised with the mindset that *It could’ve been so much worse! Why are you complaining!? You should’ve done better, It’s your fault, etc etc.*
4filth4 points2y ago
Oh no I was talking to u/_Pulltab_ not you lol
asst2therglmgr-2 points2y ago
Should the manager carry around a note pad with every single employees allergies? No. That would be insane. People with life threatening allergies have to be careful. Drinking a mystery beverage was a horrible decision. The manager was shitty about it yeah and that should be dealt with but they weren’t poisoned. That’s ridiculous.
GingerMic [OP]6 points2y ago
Hey dude, you’re kinda being an ass ngl. Please read my post and ask questions if you have any, thank you!
asst2therglmgr-2 points2y ago
I’m being realistic.
4filth5 points2y ago
??? Nothing you said makes sense if the last paragraph of OP’s post is true.
asst2therglmgr0 points2y ago
It made perfect sense. 🤔
_Pulltab_-1 points2y ago
The very first thing I acknowledged is that the manager was being an ass. But that doesn’t negate OP’s responsibility in all this.
For the record, OPs updates weren’t in the original post when I commented, they were added later. But it doesn’t change much in my mind. As OP mentioned, they are “just starting out in adulthood” so as the resident old-lady mom, my point was, it’s OPs responsibility to take care of their own health. A simple, “before I drink this, you remember I’m allergic to XYZ, right?” would suffice. If the manager still wouldn’t cop to it, then don’t drink it. If they lied and OP drank anyway, then it’s 100% on the manager and then I would say, yes, definitely escalate it.
samechange13 points2y ago
Call partner resources and tell them the whole story. You’ll be paid and they will try to avoid a lawsuit. And your manager should never talk about any baristas behind their back, especially not on the floor.
Critical5012 points2y ago
Your SM is a fucking idiot.
Its incredibly concerning she works in the food industry and doesnt seem to grasp how allergies work, and the different levels to them.
For example, there are people who have trouble tolerating dairy. But can still consume it without much issue past a bad bathroom trip or the farts. Then Ive actually met people who puke their entire stomach contents from a few bites of cheese.
If she knew you're allergic and purposely gave it to you, I'd be taking legal action. I'd get the bitch fired.
Tbh, I'd have half a mind to throw hands, but that could affect the turnout of how corporate handles it. But if this was outside of work, they'd have a broken something.

I have so many questions. lol
GingerMic [OP]7 points2y ago
If you have questions, I can do my best to answer!
hellokitty193911 points2y ago
You should ask over at r/legaladvice about workers comp. You were injured at work. And if you didn't get paid for the time you spent going home for medicine, then you had a financial loss. I don't know much about WC but it doesn't hurt to ask if there's any benefit to making a claim.
Edit: It won't matter for WC that it maybe could be considered "your fault." Many many many years ago, I broke my wrist while working at Burger King. It was definitely my fault, I was being a total dumbass. They paid my medical bills and I got a bunch of money. I'm still kind of embarrassed about it.
randomyucky11 points2y ago
You need to tell partner resources. You can sue them for this and they are gonna do everything in their power for you to not sue.
dalenakitty8 points2y ago
Please call partner resources as well as your district manager and report them!
lilBalzac8 points2y ago
It makes me angry and sad at who the company will and will not give SM positions to.
Chronos12257 points2y ago
Get that manager the fuck outta there, call partner resources/corporate
GingerMic [OP]1 points2y ago
I fully plan on contacting Partner Resources and/or my DM. Thank you!
bdrn167 points2y ago
Call HR
kait_lynb6 points2y ago
Bro I’d literally get a lawyer. I’m allergic to a few things at the bux so I refuse to drink anything unless I know 100% what’s in it
JHOOOOBI6 points2y ago
Report her! I can’t stress that enough! If she’s doing that to you, she’s doing that to others. She needs to not be working with the public if that’s her attitude.
Gemma_V5 points2y ago
This is incredibly important. You need to report it not only to corporate but to the police; she quite literally poisoned you.
Its starbucks policy that if someone has an allergic reaction you’re supposed to call 911.
If as a manager, she failed to do that, she needs to be written up at a minimum- and maybe fired.
And her refusing to acknowledge your allergies? How long until she does this to someone else? Make sure she has a record of this with the police so that someone else isn’t hurt too.
sholbyy5 points2y ago
We had a temp manager at while my normal SM was on maternity leave and this lady did all sorts of shady shit. Made some homophobic comments and then turned around and made lewd comments and low key sexual advances towards me and other partners, would run out to her car on breaks and come back clearly on something (we were all pretty sure it was coke), just a bunch of super inappropriate things. Well, when our SM came back we all had to fill out a review form to submit to our DM about the temp SM and we all absolutely detailed everything she did on those review sheets. Out DM was so upset we hadn’t called her and had waited so long.
LycaenopsPictus3 points2y ago
Partner resources, for sure. I'm pretty allergic to soy milk, used to be not so bad but now it's pretty bad, and even when my coworkers make mystery drinks they honor my inquiries on if it's got soy or not. Your manager's endangering you.
JNYfromtheblock3 points2y ago
You can report her behavior to ethics and compliance. If she knew about your allergy beforehand and still made you something that has that ingredient and gave it to you to drink without disclosing what was in it even at your request, she is not behaving ethically. That alone is enough to report her. I would also report her behavior to your DM and Partner Resources. I would ask the other partners that witnesses her talking badly about you while you had to get your medication to write statements about what they heard/saw specifically, leaving any emotions or personal feelings out of it. Make sure they only state facts - “I saw manager doing X” “I overheard manager say Y about OP” etc.
All of these phone numbers can be found in multiple places: the partner hub, the front of the daily records book, also in your partner guide (if you still have it). Your DM’s number should be available in your store or you can ask your SM for it if you feel comfortable. You do not have to disclose why you are asking for their number, as DMs are a resource and are there to assist ALL partners, especially when it comes to partner concerns and partner care.
Even if you talk with your DM about it, I would still report this situation to Partner Resources AND ethics and compliance, most importantly ethics and compliance. PRSC will only report your concerns to your DM, so I suggest reporting to all necessary channels if you want to make sure this incident is documented and handled appropriately. Also it creates a paper trail in case this manager retaliates or does this to someone else.
I’m sorry to hear that this happened to you, and I hope that you are able to get some retribution for this manager’s incompetence and incredibly unethical behavior. Good luck OP.
Flappadingo3 points2y ago
CALL PRSC IMMEDIATELY. Forget the shit talking - that isn’t important.
The putting an ingredient in that could kill you - Bitch needs fired.
CaddyShack_Cack2 points2y ago
Best comment yet
GingerMic [OP]0 points2y ago
I don’t think it would kill me, but it does get hard to breathe if not treated.
asst2therglmgr-1 points2y ago
How does the fault lie on the person making the drink and not the person who KNEW they have a life-threatening allergy and was about to drink something without knowledge of its ingredients!?
ianbz3 points2y ago
That could literally be attempted murder if you wanna take it that far. I always ask my coworkers and customers about allergens before doing anything to surprise them
asst2therglmgr1 points2y ago
Hahaha whaaaaaaaat!? You’re out of your mind! 😂😂😂
ianbz3 points2y ago
LOL I know it sounds exaggerated but it could happen! Especially since the manager blatantly made it a point to hide the ingredients
asst2therglmgr-1 points2y ago
I have dietary restrictions and was offered custom drinks all the time. No one ever remembered or even knew about these restrictions so it was on ME to keep myself safe by declining. Can’t expect everyone to remember your shit. Everybody’s got their own stuff going on.
ianbz3 points2y ago
But that’s you baby, you can’t speak for everyone
kingnojames2 points2y ago
nigga are y dumb SUE THEY ASS. REPORT TO COOPERATE. I work for these scamming ass niggas defintly report . So sorry for you i’m glad you are okay
amv29262 points2y ago
anaphylaxis is no joke. she could have easily killed you. she shouldn’t be working in food if she feels that way. so dangerous for you and customers— anyone that has a food allergy.
always_hungryy2 points2y ago
A very similar thing happened to me. I was about 18, and we just got a new product. Chocolate bars with bacon bits in it. I did not know about these because they launched right after I came on. My manager told me to try a piece. I asked what it was, she said just try it. It looked like chocolate so I ate it. Problem was I’m vegetarian. Immediately I tasted the bacon and spit it out. She was offended I had such a stark reaction and said I shouldn’t have made such a big deal about it. Yes I should have pressed more but she definitely should have told me what was I. It when I asked. And yes I didn’t know better isn’t an excuse, but it’s a reality. I now never put something in my body if someone won’t tell me what it is. This should be a rule all live by, allergies or not. Her behavior is definitely inappropriate and most likely an avoidance of blame. You should definitely reach out to corporate at least to complain about the way it was handled. We can all understand that accidents happened, lessons were learned, and thankfully everyone is okay. But the way your manager reacted to the situation is beyond unprofessional and needs to be addressed. Good luck with however you proceed.
garbagecandi2 points2y ago
As someone with a dairy allergy I felt this HEAVY. Honestly I would’ve just clocked the cow.
frostybunz2 points2y ago
I would 100% speak with HR. Absolutely unacceptable behavior.
-flowergirl19921 points2y ago
Your manager diddnt mean harm so although you’re probably mad keep in mind they meant well. And it sounds like the “shit talking” was possibly their means of dealing with feeling like an asshat. Which isn’t a good way to deal with that lol. But yeah I’d maybe talk to them first. Starbucks as a company doesn’t really look out for people with allergies. Did you disclose your allergy with them in the past before the incident happened? Best of luck fr.
Punloverrrr1 points2y ago
She should get in a lot of shit for that, like I read the edit about not wanting to sue. But I think that should be a minor felony if I'm not mistaken?
asst2therglmgr1 points2y ago
Should you be going around drinking mystery beverages if you’re so allergic to an ingredient that is obviously present in your workplace? I mean, that’s whack of them to be an ass about it but seems you could’ve been way more careful.
GingerMic [OP]1 points2y ago
I answered earlier:
1.My manager was informed previously of my allergy, so i trusted her to not put it in this drink we were trying.
2. This ingredient is not found in most drinks, it’s part of legit just 1 syrup.
3.I already admitted I should’ve pressed my manager for more information on what was in the drink.
asst2therglmgr1 points2y ago
I have dietary restrictions as well so I decline. You can’t expect everyone to remember stuff like that. That’s on you. Not to be shitty but it’s your responsibility to keep away from things you’re allergic to.
GingerMic [OP]4 points2y ago
I understand that. What I am mostly upset about is that my manager was being a jerk as soon as I left, talking sh*t straight to my friends. I honestly do not find that cool.
amv29262 points2y ago
that’s what I said above to someone ^^ yes, you had your shortcomings in the situation and could have handled things better. but despite the way you handled it the way the manager acted was unacceptable. food allergies are serious and it’s ridiculous that the manager would be talking shit about you. and not to mention in general a manager should be talking crap about their employees anyways
asst2therglmgr2 points2y ago
I get that and that really is terrible. I completely agree.
TWKern010 points2y ago
I’m baffled why someone with as severe an allergy as you claim would ever ingest something with ingredients you were unsure of.
Your Manager isn’t responsible for knowing or remembering your allergies, you’re responsible to protect yourself and you didn’t—twice. You ate something you didn’t know the ingredients of knowing we carry something you’re allergic to and you weren’t carrying your medications. Sorry, that’s irresponsible of you.
The pay and talking about you is another story and should be addressed.
You weren’t poisoned. You were reckless with your health and you’re looking for someone to blame. Take responsibility.
amv29262 points2y ago
Ok but despite how OP handled it a manager at a food place should not have that kind of attitude towards food allergies or allergies in general. I get it that she maybe wouldn’t remember the allergy but talking shit about her afterwards, and not being concerned about the health of your employee is disgusting. And trying to say “my throat closes all the time a little bit it’s fine” is just stupid — All allergies are different and not all are severe but the manager had no way of knowing if OPs reaction would have been severe or not so trying to justify it like that is just awful. Overall I think that the manager was clearly reckless and careless in the situation. I also just want to say that when you have a chronic condition and are constantly gaslighted about it being told it’s “not a big deal” it makes these situations very difficult. So I don’t think it’s very fair of you to tell OP they were being reckless with their health. They admitted their shortcomings in the situation. I just think that overall, despite that, a manager acting that way is unacceptable.
GingerMic [OP]1 points2y ago
Explained in another post, summarizing here:
I already admitted I should’ve pressed my manager for more information on the ingredients, but I’m just barely starting out on adulthood and trusted my manager to remember my allergy since she was there the first time I had a bad reaction to it. Trusting her was a mistake, I paid the price. I’ll learn next time.
