Should we start charging for straws? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by c_reckless35
Just had a thought, since we have pretty much switched to strawless lids (except Frappuccinos and drinks that get whipped cream) but people still persist to have a straw to go with their iced drinks. Should starbucks start charging for straws? Or maybe perhaps start selling reusable straws to help cut back plastic waste? Just a thought I had today on this busy Saturday morning shift.

There should be a gratuity fee for overly modified drinks that hold up the line for 5 minutes lol

Anything more than 5 modifications (besides like light/extra ice) should have a surcharge

My brain does not compute beyond 5 mods.

Absolutely. And while we’re at it, non-dairy milks should be free/standard, and dairy should have the up-charge to compensate for dairy’s negative externalities on the environment, animals, and health.

Alternative milks also put quite a strain on the environment. They are more expensive to manufacture and distribute and come with their own unique set of sustainably issues.

So, despite the earth-friendly marketing and messaging, free alternative milk is not coming to Starbucks. Without corporate first quietly raising the price of all menu items to account for it.

No, it’s an accessibility feature to people who need them. Some disabled people need straws, but yes it’s annoying for abled people to ask even with the new lid change. But it’s never right to question it anyways

IANAL but I've spent a lot of time working in this kind of environment.

Charging for straws would certainly invite class-action ADA lawsuits and Starbucks will never flirt with that. Independent coffee shops might. Paper straws might be a good compromise.

Before COVID I had the ingenious idea that we should charge 10 cents for cups of water so that 1. People quit abusing this free water and 2. So that if you bring your own cup it’s free (no more wasted plastic) but now I can’t even think about a personal cup

I wash my straws and carry them in my car
