Question about changing availability (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ruffianprincess
Hi, semi-green bean here. I was hired on in July, and when I was hired I told my SM my availability during summer would be 15 hours/week, but during the school year it would be 12 hours/week. Towards the end of summer, I felt like I would be able to handle the 15 hours/wk with my school load, so I never brought up changing my schedule. I’m into week 3 of my quarter now, though, and starting to fall behind in my schoolwork. I talked to my SM about reducing my hours today, and he said he would talk about it (I would assume with the DM?) but they aim to have partners working 20-25 hours/week. If I had known there wouldn’t be flexibility to change my availability for school, I wouldn’t have taken the job.
Is there anything I can do about this, or have I done just about as much as I can? And, if I can’t reduce my hours, does anyone have any tips on managing both school and work? I enjoy my job, so I don’t want to quit, but if it continues to get in the way of schoolwork I may have to quit and look for a job elsewhere. Thank you in advance for any help!! :)

hey! i’m in a similar situation with school and work. my manager personally is pretty good with getting be between 15-18 hours a week, and luckily with online school I have the time to balance everything.
i’d def say sit down and have a conversation- not just in passing but a genuine 10 minute talk about what you think you can do now that school is in session. be as flexible as you can (for example, you have a club after school wednesday and want that day for homework as well, though you’d be fine working monday and tuesday evenings.)
remember to be firm but not rigid and stubborn- you probably want 2-3 days during the week if possible for schoolwork, but maybe weekends youre more available? or possibly you can work shorter shifts during the week and have the weekend to catch up?
for balancing school and work- i’d try and bring your work with you to do during your breaks! you probably don’t want to bring a whole textbook to try and write an essay on, but maybe make/review flashcards, study for a test, use a pdf on your phone, etc.
good luck!

this! i’m a college freshman, and i have monday, wednesday, and friday as my days for strictly school work. every other day i’ll come in whenever my SM wants, but those days are strictly for school (also i drive an hour to my college on those days and traffic is hell when i go home). i’m usually working every day i have listed as available, but the shifts are still short enough for me to fit in homework and stuff once i’m off. i’d try to communicate something like that, because falling behind in school is my worst nightmare, and my SM understood that with my availability. but also if your shifts are like 6hrs+ and you have to study i’d study on your breaks, it’s actually pretty efficient (i had to do this for my midterm this past weekend).
