Pull to Thaw (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by marinebiostu
Hi Guys, I'm a fairly new shift supervisor and was hoping that someone can explain to me how to correctly do the food pull? Specifically as an opener.

I got promoted right before COVID but was never properly trained on the food pull so I have kind of just been winging it and stocking up the yellow trays and pastry cart with what we need.(haven't exactly been using the pull to thaw app). We have been ridiculously busier since Covid started but have way less staff than normal. I find it very difficult to have any time to be in the back because I'm always having to be on the floor to support and cover breaks and lunches. I've been getting away with pulling food the way I have but now I have to be on top of it because my Store manager recently got fire and we've lost 10 partners that have put in their two weeks in the past month. Now there's several store managers overseeing our store.

Still, we don't have the support that we need to do everything properly and I barely have the time to be off the floor. Most of the time we're running on a 4 man play or less. Our drive-thru wait times are terrible and every partner is getting burnt out so we have call outs almost every day.

Anyway, my questions to any shift are what is the proper way to pull food? At around what time do you typically step off to do the food pull and is the pull to thaw app really accurate? cause to me it seems to be wayyyy off.

Why don’t you use the pull to thaw app? The pars populate based on sales data. If you think they are off, you have to change them in IMS yourself. If you choose not to do that, you could just pull whatever you wanted and just adjust that amount you pulled on the app. You need to use the app because every time you do a pull without completing it in the app, your DM gets an automated email about how you didn’t do it, so at the very least just click through the app until you complete it. The pull just needs to be done before 11am (lest your DM also get an email about now you did it too late) so just do it when you aren’t busy. That’s usually about 6am for me. Also, I don’t bother with the carryover count when I do the pull in the morning. It’s a waste of time. It probably mattered when half the food had a one day shelf life but now it is all 2 days.

When I got promoted the app was always having errors and not opening up. So my SM told me to just pull what I needed cause I had a good idea anyway of how much of each food item we would go through. Now it's just hard to find the time to do it properly by starting with the carryover count, I find myself most mornings just running back and forth between warming and pulling food.

But now that I know some people don't bother with the carryover count, it might help me out a lot in terms of saving time. Thank you!

To skip it, just type 0 into one of the items and when you click next, it autofills the rest of the items to 0 :)

thank you! and just to clarify, this doesn't affect inventory or pars, and sm's/dm's can't see these counts?

It does affect the pars. Morning pull pars are about 40% of the pars for the whole day while night par is 80%. So if you had a par of 50 birthday cake pops for the whole day, the iPad will tell you to pull 21 (20, but it rounds up to the closest pack). If you do the carry over count and you already have 18 birthday cake pops already on the floor, it’ll only ask you to pull 3.

I don’t know about your store, but 21 birthday cake pops isn’t gonna last me until the night pull, especially when I do my pull at 6am. So that is why I skip the carry over count. However, this balances out at night where they actually do the carry over count and how we keep from over pulling. And no, I don’t believe your DM can see that you just zero it out.

Is this reference to the FOH counting of pastries that carried over from the night before? It will affect the pars because it takes whats up front and adjusts the existing pars to whatever exists up front + what needed to be pulled originally (Par - FOH pastries). If youre really busy, like said above, just 0 one item out and pull from the par it gives you.
