Hehehhehehe, so yeah i just got accepted to one of my city’s newer and busier starbucks. I start training this weekend! Im 16 and this is my first job so I’m excited but also extremely scared of working in food/drink. I have 2 questions: 1- ummm, i don’t like coffee. My family actually doesn’t go to Starbucks at all. I don’t like to drink things with caffeine ( iced water is where its at). IS THIS AT ALL COMMON!? I can already picture the “what do you recommend” scenarios where i break down. 2- i started watching all these “making drinks” videos on youtube, and my gosh these drinks are complicated. Is there a certain way your supposed to remember all these drinks or do you just get used to it eventually?
I love this reddit page already from looking at the posts you are all such lovely people! I’m excited to join the force :)

for “what do you recommend” questions just give them whatever is most popular on the menu, like people come in like “i want something sweet and creamy but i dont like coffee” and i’ll be like well we have our coconut refreshers or whatever tf. also you will get used to the recipes, they usually follow a certain pattern that is easy to remember. im 17 and started around december and its taken me that long to get used to doing everything but you’ll make it! always ask your coworkers questions when you arent sure about something, it happens to everyone all the time. you’ll do great!

you'll be fine! it helps to keep in mind your basic recipes: most hot bar drinks are basically lattes with various modifications, then you've got refreshers/teas (i think of these similarly since they're both shaker drinks measured the same way), cold brew drinks, and frappuccinos. also there's iced coffee and stuff but those don't need that special of a recipe. you'll get there, it becomes second nature after a while! as for recommendations, as you learn the menu you can recommend things that are popular even if you don't like them, or ask your coworkers for recommendations to store up in your head for later!
it's going to be scary at first, just remember that your partners want to help you, so ask a lot of questions! you're gonna do great.

Awwww your so sweet! And yes ive heard of these ‘hot bar’ ‘cold bar’ uses! My only confusion so far is do you have to steam the milks for different amounts of time based on the drink? Thanks for your help and kind words! They mean a lot!

kind of, steam longer for a capp and a little shorter for a flat white, but you'll get the hang of it quickly. a tip someone gave me for cappuccinos is that you should aerate to about 120 degrees for nice fluffy foam rather than counting seconds! for a latte and flat white you do want about 3-4 seconds and 2-3 seconds respectively, but precision is not that important; i never count seconds, just aerate until the milk sounds right. a lot of it becomes muscle memory!

The first three months are usually the hardest as you’re learning everything. Stick with it, smile, be as helpful as you can be, and you’ll be fine. Know that when other partners give you tips on how to do things, it’s trying to help, not tell you that you suck. :)
