Asking for a raise (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by StuffedCrustWhore
I came to my current store with two years of barista experience, I started with $9.75. We’ve got new hires I was chatting with during our lunch breaks—so not on the clock—and learned they were offered a $10 start since they had a year experience. I was thinking of waiting for my next performance review to make my case about getting a raise—last review I got some criticism about trying harder to make connections I’ve got out of my way since then to learn customers name and something about them even when they’re awful and rude to me—but I’m not sure how to go about it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you get one just for asking, you'll be the first ever.

You can freely talk about your wage whenever you want. On or off the clock.

I was talking about pay to someone before this (how at my first job they considered an extra $.05/hour a large raise) and our sm heard just the money talk and pulled me aside and told me it wasn’t allowed. I had to clarify that I was mentioning my first job and how awful it was. I specify not on the clock because I believe it’s the Wagner Act that defends workers right to talk about it but there’s some sticky wording about if it’s while the employees should be focused on working or not.

It’s illegal for an employer to discourage people from discussing wages. Full stop.

Yeah but doesn’t stop the scare tactics to get us to not

Target stops people from discussing wages as well.

SMs don’t have control over wages for starting baristas. Everybody starts at the same rate. All raises also go thru DM since SMs don’t have control over it. You can state your case to the SM and your SM can ask DM for approval though.

Not to add to the train of 'are you sure' but I had no experience and was hired in December at 9.50 and a coworker that had experience with a licensed store got hired in November at 9.

I was an SM myself for 5 years. My current SM and I just had a conversation about how he doesn’t have control over baristas wages and how he thinks it’s unfair to some partners. A partner can ask for a raise and state their case with reasons why they deserve it, but SM will need to get DM’s approval on it.
When SMs do hiring paperwork, they have no way of adjusting staring wage for new hires at all (unless they send a request to the DM and have DM approve it and adjust it in the system.

Not true at my store. Different people have different starting wages depending on previous experience at the discretion of the SM.

Are you licensed or corporate? Corporate stores SM can’t adjust starting wage for baristas without DMs approval and DM have to actually do it.

So strange! Im at a corporate store and know for a fact it is happening here! 😶

Maybe your SM asked the DM for it, but SM doesn’t have access to adjusting wages for baristas at all.

Starbucks doesn’t give performances based raises. Raises are given out at the beginning of each year. Outside of that, they are given with promotions.

So you can ask, but you will most likely be told no.

When you have your Partner Development Conversation with your manager you can bring up that specific goal of improving customer connections, and share some examples. Talking about money seems taboo, but advocating for yourself is important since no one is going to do it for you.
