Sunglasses (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by philosopher_cat_lady
Has anyone been told they can't wear sunglasses in drive-thru at sunrise and sunset? I see nothing in the partner guide prohibiting it. Well, today I was told that by my district manager who happened to be visiting. In my opinion, it's a safety issue if I can't see while I'm working because the sun is blinding me.

Yes, I’ve been told this as well. While there may not be anything in the Partner Guide that prohibits it, there’s also nothing that allows it. And as far as the dress code is concerned

> Partners should direct questions to the store manager, who will decide what is appropriate or not within the dress code.

So if your manager says that sunglasses are not within dress code, then sunglasses aren’t within dress code. And since hats are a part of the dress code, I would assume the arguement would be that Starbucks is providing us with an alternative means to block the sun from our faces.

Otherwise, you may want to speak to your eye doctor about the possibility of applying for an accommodation.

At the same time, I'm allowed to refuse to do anything that I feel is unsafe.

Yes, and your manager can fire you for refusing to do your job.

Then Starbucks has a loose meaning of the word 'allowed'

Not really though. You’re saying you want to protect your eyes from the sun. So Starbucks has allowed us to wear hats. You’re not “allowed” to say, “No I don’t want to protect my eyes that way, I want to do it my way.” Starbucks isn’t making you forego eye protection, they’re just not allowing you to use your preferred method.

Unless you can get a medical accommodation.
