First, that absolutely sucks (Trans man barista here). I haven’t worked at Starbucks for that long, but honestly I feel that should be brought to corporate that is far beyond inappropriate. Also I feel really bad if he’s treating you like that I can only imagine what his poor child is going through. I’m glad you have support from shifts/other baristas there. Starbucks overall lgbtq+ support is a big reason why I started working for the company, so I feel like the partner contact center should be able to help you out. If anything would transferring stores be an option? I hope this all gets better for you!

agreed. if the dm didn’t do anything, go higher.

Yeah that’s the main reason I started working there too which makes this whole thing suck even more. I’m currently talking with one of the old shifts (transferred stores a while back) about how to report things to corporate

I'm sorry for your experience, no one at work should be made uncomfortable in such a way.

Document. Document. Document. Like today. Write out every incident and include as many details as you can remember WRT days, times, exact words said, etc. Coming in with notes and details goes a long way in getting action done, especially if you have to escalate it beyond an internal issue.

If your DM isn't effectively resolving this issue, escalate by calling Partner Relations at HQ. They will take this VERY SERIOUSLY if it's not on the local level.

If, at any point, you are being retaliated against, document that as well and report to Partner Relations.

thank you! i am really afraid of being retaliated against because my sm tends to be super petty so i’ll definitely keep that in mind
rudebii 5 points 2y ago
If you perceive any time of retaliation report it immediately, having a clear timeline and notes of past behavior will make it harder to wave off some common retaliation tactics like cutting hours or being given the least desirable shifts, positions, etc. Sudden drops in partner evaluations, sudden write-ups over minor offenses, etc. can also be red flags, which is why it is so important to keep notes.

Definitely do keep notes if this happens! I had to go to my DM about something, and she told me multiple times that Starbucks has strong anti-retaliation policies. If your DM doesn’t listen, please take this higher. Also I’m sorry you’re experiencing this! You deserve a safe and welcoming work environment, and this clearly ain’t it.

Contact Ethics and Compliance. File a report. I had an issue with a shift constantly misgendering me at my first store. They did an investigation and I got a transfer.
gaymememac 6 points 2y ago
I’ll definitely look into that thank you!!

You're welcome. I hope they are able to do something for you. Being harrased at work is garbage.
