So, I'm trans ftm and my boss knows about it and is all good. Next year I wanna have top surgery which will take like 8 weeks of recovery at least and I won't be able to do heavy lifting or reaching up above my head for ages.

I'm in a UK Starbucks, does anyone know if they'd let me take this time off?? I mean, I know its medical but it's not "technically" emergency care so would I get leave?

I'm part time so it would be chill if it was unpaid for most of it.

Would it be easier to just quit and get a new job when I'm done recovering?

*sorry about format I'm a reddit green bean too*

I have one week left on my medical leave I just got top surgery!!!
You can apply for either disability while you are on a leave to get paid for that time you aren’t working
The disability is usually 60% your regular pay
And then ofc you can supplement your pay with any sick time or vacation time you have
I used up my 45 hours sick time I probably would have never used and qualified for disability so I was basically getting the same paycheck as when I was working
I also only took 4 weeks off tho and am going back with only 15 hours a week until I feel I can handle more

I don’t know about the UK but in the US you can get approved for leave even if it’s considered not medically necessary, although I think you could make a good argument that it IS medically necessary in your case.

Either way, I’m pretty sure you’ll be fine. I don’t know how they manage leaves there - here it’s through a company called Sedgwick, but you should be able to call and ask for info about your options.

Good luck!

I’d start with talking to your boss—they may know the best way to help you out because there are probably several options. If you’re uncomfortable talking to them (though it sounds like you’re cool with them?) you can call the partner contact center (I dont know what the number is for the UK but I’m sure if you can find it online or on the hub). That said, I doubt you will have trouble getting a leave of absence. Even if it’s not medical, which you can probably argue for (though I don’t know the specific policies), you can get a personal leave and that way you have a job when you’re ready to get back to it.
