Was I trained faster than usual? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by annaedaugherty
Hi everyone :)

I started at Starbucks this past Friday (10/2) and began my training. Friday I focused on prep and warming. Saturday I did computer training. Sunday I did DTR, and Monday I did DTO. Yesterday I got to try a little bit of hot and cold bar, but was pretty confused and not confident in the drinks I was making. So all in all, I was trained in 5 days. I feel like this is a little fast..am I justified?

I’m so nervous to be by myself because I’m still having to ask a lot of questions, forcing me to rely on my more experienced coworkers. Any tips for a green bean?

I started a few weeks ago, I had a short 3 hour onboarding where my SM went over the company, benefits, rules, dress code and I registered on the computer and filled out paperwork. The following week I had three 4 hour shifts with our trainer, each day covering a different role, pos, cs, bar. We are a freestanding store with an outdoor cafe in an outdoor shopping center and no drive thru. On weekends I've been working pos or only doing mobile orders and during the week I've been on bar. Our shift stepped down and I was offered the position, I'll start that training the week after next.

I guess my training was fast but it's definitely not my first job, mid 30's here, and I've bartended in the past. Most of my experience has been in retail management. Today I felt really confident on bar, asked for help with one large mobile order but didn't get bogged down. I think what helped me the most was paying attention to basic drinks and how they show up on the right side of the pos, sometimes when it's slow I'll just click through the drinks and ask about things I haven't seen ordered before.

Good luck with training!

I mean, I only had three days total of training as a cafe person (no DTR/DTO): one day on the computer, two days on the floor of POS/prep/warming/CS/bar. Feel free to ask questions though! Most people are very open to helping you succeed.

i think i was trained in 5 days too. the learning curve is huge and everyone knows that. i’ve been here for 2 months and i’m still currently learning like.... everything ever. don’t worry about asking questions, it’s way better to annoy the HELL out of your coworkers than make a drink wrong and have your ass chewed out by a customer. you’ll do great <3

The core training plan is 21 hours for the new barista, with 12.5 of those hours being with the trainer and 2.5 with the manager. If your store has them, drive thru (2.75 hours) and nitro (.5 hours) are a little extra time. My manager tries to spread this over 4 or 5 days so it's not too much at once. I know many people aren't getting their full training right now because Covid, but even for those that do, it's important to realize this is basically just an overview or introductory course, it typical takes around three months to start to feel like you know what you're doing. Please continue to ask questions, we'd much rather you ask and do it right than have to spend time to redo it!

In my district they make me train y’all in 14 split into two shifts
It’s totally not enough that basically your third day in you’re on your own
And in those 14 hours you also have to do all your computer work too which cuts even more into my time 😔
