New partner Advice/Tips? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by goldfishsea
Hi all!

So I just got hired and finished all my onboarding papers. I don’t have a first day yet, I’m waiting for the manager to contact me to set it all up (everything’s been over the phone so far) I’m a little nervous and have no experience with coffee.

I just wanted to know any tips for the first few days, what to expect and also what should I wear?
I’ve been working at Disneyland for the last 4 1/2 years so I never had to worry about wearing normal clothes to work. I would like to go pick stuff up now while I have time to look instead of scrambling once I get my first schedule.

Any advice is welcome! Thanks!

Search "Starbucks Dress Code" for the official guide, including colors and types of clothes that are acceptable. While non-slip shoes are technically not required, I highly recommend them, as well as either insoles or cushioned shoes. Many shoe brands have some sort of "at work" line, or you can search for restaurant shoes.

Don't spend a lot of money on new clothes - you will be splashed with coffee, syrup, and whipped cream probably daily and it's easy for them to get ruined. Just go for something comfortable. Secondhand stores are great.

Your first few days should be a combination of computer training and hands-on time with a trainer. I think the most important thing to remember is that your training period is merely an overview of Starbucks and it will take a lot longer for things to sink in and start to feel natural - I'd say about three months, give or take. You will have a million questions after you finish, and that's fine! It's better to ask and be sure than do something wrong.

Thank you!

I saw the dress code online, but I don’t really have anything I think that’ll fit what it’s looking for. I never though about secondhand stores so I just may try that!

So for awhile I’ll be on my own trying to figure everything out? Are most partners who have been there awhile pretty cool with new hires asking questions? I’m going to feel so bad if I’m going too slow or annoying my co workers because I’m still trying to get the hang of it

You'll get those first few days of dedicated training that show you the basics - how to brew coffee, make basic drinks, restock everything, use the register, etc, but it's just impossible to cover everything in a week and it's a lot of information to absorb at once. Your partners should be fine with answering your questions, but of course this will vary... Worst case, you can always say "I just want to make sure I do it right so you don't have to fix it!" and that should make them more than happy to help. I mean, if you have to ask how to brew coffee every day for a month, they'll probably get a little annoyed, but I think the fact that you're here and concerned about doing a good job means you're going to do great.

I’m on my second week of starting by myself after training and I can’t tell if my co workers like me or if I’m annoying them too much. I’ve been on register since I got free of training and all they do at the bar is talk. Anything I can do to fit in?

There is a bit to learn at first so look up starbucks barista training quizlets! They really helped me memorized the codes and what goes in drinks
