Landlord problems and moving; advice please (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by robocreep
Hello fellow baristas, sorry if the formatting is weird since I'm posting on mobile. My girlfriend and I have been renting a room in the same house for 1.5 years and all has been okay until now. My landlord, who we live with, lost his mother back in May and has just now turned manic. We suspect that he's bipolar and has stopped medication. He has also recently been put on some sort of leave from his job as a paramedic.

I will be talking to my SM tomorrow about my housing situation as it has become dangerous for us to live here. My landlord flip flops between being sickeningly bubbly and aggressively mean, and he's constantly waking us up at all hours so I'm incredibly sleep deprived (as I'm posting this at 4am my time). This situation has been going on for just under 2 weeks, and it actually got worse today with him having weird, dangerous delusions and paranoia. I spoke briefly with my SM last week saying that I was looking to move, but I think we need to get out of our apartment now.

My question to you is if there are any resources Starbucks has to help us through this time? I will be asking for at least a week long LOA starting as soon as possible, and I'm currently applying to new apartments in my area. The only issue is that some of the start dates for the leases are Nov 1st, and I might need to be out of the city staying at my parents' until then (2 hours away from work by transit). Any advice or similar experiences?

Hi, I’m so sorry this is happening! I have bipolar disorder, and someone going off of their meds with this illness can be very dangerous, both to the person and anyone around them.

Do you live in a place with decent mental healthcare facilities/in-patient programs? If he is becoming dangerous during a manic episode, it is 100% ok and in everyone’s best interest to call 911 and ask for an ambulance/mental health workers. Usually in these cases, he’d be checked in to an in-patient program to safely let the manic episode subside, get him on proper medications, and help stress the importance of not going off medications. If it’s a good program, he’d also get grief counseling, which sounds like what he needs and a likely reason he’d stop taking meds.

Mania is so hard to describe to people who have never had it, but in more intense manic episodes, you’re truly detached from reality. You do things that you would never, ever, EVER dream of doing while in a stable state. Friends/family can sometimes talk someone out of an anxious or depressive state, but mania is different and requires medical intervention. Step 1 is to remove him from harms way/prevent him from harming you or others. Once he’s safely in an in-patient program, you’ll have more time to look for alternate housing. I’m not 100% sure what kinds of LOA you’d be eligible for, but definitely make sure you’re in a safe environment as soon as possible. Wishing you the best of luck, please stay safe and take care of yourself

Thanks so much for your advice, it truly means a lot that you've typed this all out. I hesitate to call 911 to have him admitted to an in-patient program just because I'm not 100% sure why he is acting this way (if he has truly gone off of meds, is diagnosed bipolar). Perhaps I should not have used the term 'manic' if I do not know his diagnoses, but the way his mood changes and the way he has been acting leads me to believe that it's the most likely possibility.

I live in Canada so our Healthcare system is decent, I'm just concerned that he'll be able to bullshit his way out of admittance since he is a paramedic and might know how to do that. Then we could REALLY be in trouble...

Yes that’s very true. As someone who has been manic, he is showing all the signs of a manic episode, so you may be right and I’d assume the same thing in your situation. If he has any friends/family members that you know of that you can contact, that’d be a good place to start if you’re hesitant to call 911!

I don't have any advice or similar experiences, but I would recommend asking another subreddit for help (Starbucks may very well have resources to help -- I just also suggest asking elsewhere in addition to this for help, advice, or resources).

Thanks, yeah. I'm not so sure if I want to try r/legaladvice or not since that subreddit gets some flack. One of my housemates gave me the phone number for a community legal advice clinic, so I'm going to call them and leave a message about our situation.

The EAP or Employee Assistance program will be able to triage the situation and try and give you all the starbucks options on the table. I don’t have the contact info in front of me but if your in a corporate store the phone number is in the daily records book( big book) on the second page with all the phone numbers on it. Good luck!
