Does anyone actually like their job?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Crashwaves
I just started 2 months ago and I’m already feeling jaded, especially with our store slowly re-opening the cafe and all that again. I’ve noticed that even the baristas with the best attitudes typically come in to work saying that they hate their job and don’t want to be here. I feel like I see so much of that on here also. But most of the partners at my store have worked for Starbucks for years and years. Why do y’all stay when you’re so miserable? I know the benefits are good but man my benefits were basically as good when I worked at chipotle, when I take into account the amount of stress I deal with on my shifts (chip felt like it had so much more direction and structure).
How are y’all feeling? What do you think needs to change? What do you like about your job? I need to stick with this job for at least the rest of 2020 so hopefully I can change my outlook for the time being.

honestly usually the partners i work with are cool af, so like it’s like we’re on a sinking ship but you got someone going through it with you, and like benefits wise i could really use the health insurance and honestly that’s what matter to me, idk if other places offer as good, times that i’m about to qualify for the free stock, and i’m in college so just suffer this my last few years and hopefully i can jump ship

I definitely get all of that. I guess I’m comparing it to chipotle bc it’s pretty similar to that job (we just sell a much wider variety of stuff). But the thing I loved about chipotle was that all of my coworkers were so passionate about their jobs and proud of where they work. I think the general negative attitude at Starbucks is bringing me down, because I’m only focusing on the negative now and I don’t like being like that, especially when I’m still a green bean. I’m gonna hold out a bit longer too but just to get myself to barber school or something that will get me on a career path

I love this job tbh. It’s far from perfect (as any job at this level will be) but I enjoy it almost every day
Crashwaves [OP]3 points2y ago
That’s really good to hear dude! Can I ask how long you’ve been at Starbucks?
cs_phoenix5 points2y ago
4 years, just got promoted to SSV fairly recently too! :)

Congrats! Do you plan on continuing to move up with the company?

I also started almost exactly two months ago to the day. I started out incredibly happy-go-lucky and I LOVED it. However, people kept calling out and I kept coming in to cover, and I was scheduled every day of every weekend in a never-ending cycle, and that’s definitely part of why I became jaded so quickly. I decided to change my availability and I’m hoping that helps, but I feel you. This job is really hard on the body and having mental illness compounds the stress.

I feel you so hard man. I am definitely the person that people call on to take shifts. One partner texted me this morning actually, but I decided I really need this day off. I’m getting about 38 hours a week but I really do need this money right now. I’m taking off 3 weeks next month for surgery and sort of hoping to drop my hours down closer to 25 once I come back.
My partner and I are finally getting out of a rough patch also; it had gotten pretty bad for a minute because our schedules were the complete opposite. They work a normal weekday job and I’m gone all evening and weekends. I need more time with my partner also

I’m so glad to hear that you and your partner are getting through a rough patch! My partner and I have also been going through rough patches because it’s LDR. But anyway, if I wasn’t working all high volume days, I feel like it would be a lot better. I’m hoping it gets better for you and that you can drop your hours soon!!
Crashwaves [OP]2 points2y ago
I hope it gets better for you also! I’ve never really done long distance and I don’t know if I could. Props to you for working through it! I appreciate the support

In my experience, it literally comes down to the kind of store you work at. I started out at a café and I absolutely loved it. It was chill, you got to know people and you really felt like you were an actual barista (my latte art was getting pretty respectable.)
Then Covid does its thing, my café is closed permanently, and I was transferred to a drive-thru. Lemme yell you, it's a completely, radically different job. Like, there is no way to adequately describe how these two paradigms differ. One is the café experience you expect, the other is the merciless, breakneck pace of fast-food.
If you already hate it then do something else. It won't get better. I only waited it out to see if my café would ever reopen. I started interviewing elsewhere as soon as I got word my transfer was permanent.

I literally only like coworkers and getting free drinks and food. Occasionally I’ll enjoy working bar, but for the most part the job sucks. It’s way too stressful and we aren’t paid nearly enough. And too many expectations.

I’m still loving it as a 178.... I still share with customers the coffee master passion I have :) keep yourself sane at work... find the little things to enjoy... regulars brand new baby... the big fluff of a dog outside... the way the sun is setting (I’m a closing SSV). Life is short but the free coffee ;)
Also... Customers suck some days! We are a Cafe with Uber eats and it can get crazy... we are beside an Ontario Works office (end of month is bad!) Just keep swimming!
Crashwaves [OP]1 points2y ago
I definitely need to remind myself more often to take a minute to breathe, instead of trying to make drinks as fast as possible. You’re right about looking for small things to enjoy. I need to do that more often. I’m so glad you’ve found a job that you love! Thank you for your positivity

I love helping my bean kids :) if I can help teach you guys old school tricks and knowledge then I have done my job as the Store Momma Bear :)

I honestly love my job! Yes, it has its moments and customers suck and sometimes our team has its problems but overall I thoroughly love the people I work with and most of the time I have a lot of fun! I recently became a barista trainer and that’s probably my favorite thing! I would love to become a SSV at some point and while it’s not a forever job, I enjoy it for the time being :)

I've been a partner for 2 1/2 years. I started out at a toxic, shitty store with horrible co-workers and a constant rush. Worked there for a little over a year. Transfered and now my coworkers at my current store make things easier for the most part, but sometimes the fast pace wears me out. I don't like being micromanaged by people, and sometimes you get new hires like that, or old partners that get sticks up their ass.
Sometimes it's worth it. Sometimes not. I stay for the benefits because I need health care, and the good outweighs the bad for now.

I hear Kevin Johnson loves his job

Nope. It's miserable. I stayed for the minimum wage and the not wanting to job hunt during covid. By far the most draining job I've ever had.

I do like my job a lot. I like that I’m never bored and generally I like what Starbucks stands for. I think the burnout comes from seeing through all the platitudes and just generally being criminally overworked. plus Starbucks customers are particularly entitled and that really gets to you over time. so I understand both sides of this whole conversation, I just try not to judge other people for complaining

So, I've been a partner for 5.5 years now (a SSV for almost 3) and it has been a fantastic time, with a great crew at a wonderful small cafe. It's truly been fantastic working there despite some of the bad or stressful days.

I genuinely like my job...I’ve been with company for 5 years and been a SSV for 3 of those years. I have a great team and pretty good manager. Of course there are bad days and really shitty customers but for the most part it’s a good job. With all that being said I’m definitely not happy with the way the company has handled some things during this pandemic.

I actually really love this job! I love the customers(most of them), the team and the work itself isn’t too terrible especially when you have fun partners on your team. I usually work 30 to 35 hours a week so I’m almost always at the store. It has helped me break out of my shell and be more social. The coffee master program was also super special to me. I started as a licensed TARBUCKS barista then moved into a Corp store. I just recently got promoted to SSV after being a barista trainer for a year. I would say it definitely depends on the partners you work with. If they aren’t somewhat happy or have a negative attitude it can definitely shift the whole vibe of the store. My ultimate goal is to become a store manager because I just love creating that welcoming experience for all. 💙

I’m gonna be honest if it wasn’t for the city and the team I work with i would hate everything about the bux

I like my job because my coworkers and shifts and my manager are friendly and great people to be around. I think everyone is mad a corporate because they didn't continue to do cat pay. Honestly this job is all about location. Never work at a mall store, I picked up a shift there once and I literally had a panic attack.
