Working on the floor. Small rant.(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by dakboy24
Managers who can't do the simplest barista work and always need help for everything on the floor shouldn't be managers.
When you'd rather be understaffed then have a manager on the floor. That should be a sign you shouldn't be a manager.
6/8 managers I've had fit this. Oops 😬
luyuun105 points2y ago
My manager offers to help on bar when we get busy. His help means that he’ll get a pike and then walk off somewhere and won’t be seen until the rush is over
dakboy24 [OP]59 points2y ago
Two drinks come up when they are on bar and the start calling for support.... and it will be like 2 normal lattes....
meloscav15 points2y ago
And i thought *I* was inexperienced on bar...
Alefur10 points2y ago
My Shifts are fairly new and more of a hire out of necessity and I understand that they're not properly trained fully, but any time they try to help me in a rush I just prefer they step off since it just makes it so much worse 😥 I appreciate them trying, but I just need them to know what they're doing instead of stopping me every 5 seconds to ask about something else, over and over and over again while we have 20+ people in the lobby and a drive thru line to the street.

lmao "woah now! mobile orders with my cafe orders?? Better call in the big guns this is getting out of control."
xiew66 points2y ago
My manager will main bar during peak. He’s the best.
aimsthename8810 points2y ago
Same! I don’t know what I’d do without him.
itsProDii5 points2y ago
that’s awesome
heartashley4 points2y ago
I got really lucky as well and the manager I had was super super involved. Would fit in anywhere needed or just jump in when necessary. He was the coolest honestly.
coffeesparklez42 points2y ago
We definitely work together.
rileyabsolutely5 points2y ago
What?
ETA: never mind now I get it lol
eggghuasted29 points2y ago
Exactly! My manager right now can’t make a tea. Like a regular tea.
lemonjuicepulp21 points2y ago
My manager : * makes one beverage in the incorrect steps and takes like a whole minute to finish* alright guys I’m going on ten
Greenbeanapron18 points2y ago
Mine was primary bar for peak this morning and rocked it. She pretty much never asks us to do something she wouldn’t do herself. Love her!
carter_west115 points2y ago
oh my god this!!!! i had a boss that would do this all the time like we would have to pick up her slack cause she was never behind the counter, even when it was just her and one other person.
asocial_hermit10 points2y ago
my manager will only be on warming and even then they sometimes disappear. or they'll come over to the bar and say something like "oh you just have so many drinks" pull three or four stickers then leave and i'm always left there kinda like "thanks???"
hailvy8 points2y ago
Yess my manager will pull multiple stickers and put them on cups and line them up on my station, blocking all my free space, and they don’t even pre-pump the syrups for them either
asocial_hermit2 points2y ago
what kind of monster does that?!
hailvy3 points2y ago
I kept looking at my bar 1 like “wtf why” and he just had to give me sympathy eyes bc peak

My SM is a whiz on bar. It’s when they work CS it’s gets frustrating because they like to small talk
VentiEggBite6 points2y ago
My SM is a blessing. She’s happy to be main bar any time of day, and she even does clean plays !!! with us sometimes and gives herself the nasty tasks like mats or cleaning out the vacuum.
M3m3D4ddy216 points2y ago
My manager has asked me a couple time what time we close
eat-reddit-tv1 points2y ago
That’s hilarious. They could literally look at the line chart and minus half an hour.
M3m3D4ddy211 points2y ago
Oh that ain’t even a millionth of it. They once asked me how to pull off the part that holds the milk pitchers and cups (I’ve had a brainfart and can’t think of it) on the new bars. Get this, you pull it. We even had them for a while

My old manager was a beast. She was getting screwed over by the DM but she gave her all when we needed someone on bar or register.
One time when she was off, the DM did a surprise visit. We’d had like three call outs and it was just a two floor. Me and a supervisor. I was ringing front and drive, SSV was double barring, it was during the after school rush and the floor was an absolute disaster. Fuckin DM sat in the lobby and watched us struggle.
She decided to “help” by sweeping. SWEEPING. She just kept getting in our way. She was so worried about appearances but she didn’t even empty a trash can.
Few days after that, my SSV got some kind of write up and derogatory marks straight from the DM herself.
Not too long after that incident we both quit. Our SM left three days after us, and after she bounced 9 more people quit with little or no notice.
This was a district where in that same time frame, one SM walked out in the middle of a shift and never came back. Three other SMs gave their two week notice. Had to have other districts send people in. That DM made everyone’s life hell and broke a lot of good people.
Fuck you J.
Edit: did my comment get posted like ten times?! If so, I’m sorry!
alycrawford42-4 points2y ago
I’ve been having a rough week with my manager and this thread made me realize I could have it SO much worse oh my god.
My manager was an outside hire and she busted her ass to learn bar. She was always open to advice and constructive criticism, so that was great. She sucks at making workable schedules and managing partner conflicts but yeah at least she can bar?😂😂
I’m sorry you guys are having to put up with shitty managers
shosh_c4 points2y ago
My old manager was literally never on the floor. I didn’t know until I transferred that SMS were supposed to be on the floor ever! New manager rocks, she’s on the floor as often as she can.
Sushiyeh3 points2y ago
My favorite is when the shift calls some tasks “peasant” tasks.... 👻😌
Kale-Afraid2 points2y ago
That’s the problem with outside hires. I think it’s much more valuable to have a manager that’s worked their way up and understands how to do everything.
kelrob982 points2y ago
we outside hired a manager who didn’t know how to bar at all it was painful...makes me extra appreciative of the manager I have now who knows her stuff and helps us out
scubadoobydoo1312 points2y ago
My old district manager never worked store level. Sure that’s the way it is for most district managers I think, but how does corporate expect DMs to make proper judgement calls and decisions that affect us “lowly baristas” if they haven’t experienced what we deal with on a day to day basis?
The funniest thing that happened one day was he came in and started warming food for drive thru. It’s was the weirdest things because he NEVER does that and we couldn’t figure out why or what he was doing. And of course he was just getting in the way and slowing us down but what can ya do 🤷♀️.
crzyshiba2 points2y ago
Hahahha same my SM I get it she wants to help but I’d rather just hav her do warming and let us bar even if we are swamped cause Th way the customers complain about the drink and we gotta remake it
dodofishman1 points2y ago
My new SM tries to help but she has no food service experience at all and just gets in the way, but she's trying so :// Just how can such incompetent SMs get hired in the first place,.....I know the real answer but it's the principle of it all
Avuneon1 points2y ago
Failing upward
FemmeScarface1 points2y ago
When I ask our assistant manager for help she just says "oh so and so will be here in an hour and they can help you" and then just sits there on the laptop for 8 hours a day. Shes opening her own store next month and I pity anyone she hires.
HGoddess881 points2y ago
Exactly!!!! I’ve had like 7/9 SMs that fit this too. They can’t run a floor, they don’t clean ANYTHING, not good at time management, not friendly with customers. I have actually been understaffed and refused to get the SM from the back

Do mean actual store manager or shifts? My manager really only does food.
