Just a little rant: I don’t understand how it’s okay for a new ASM to care so little about their baristas. Scheduling only two openers, or having only two people on the floor during a lunch rush, giving the fewest hours possible, seeing baristas struggle and then say “idk why barista 1 isn’t helping u barista 2” when they could themselves jump in.

I know the answer is because sometimes bad people exist who only care about looking good to corporate no matter how badly the baristas under them have to suffer. But it’s still crazy to me because we’re in a pandemic. Like wow if there was ever a time to have one ounce of empathy in your body.

And I really hope no one replies saying “ASMs and SM jobs aren’t to be on the floor only to manage” because what is BS to the max. I’ve seen my own SM just in especially when it’s crazy and we need all the help we can get. I’ve heard people say “there’s a hierarchy” and that’s not how you get a happy work environment :-) ofc everyone has a position that is higher than the other but in the end everyone should be on the same team. If the boat is sinking you don’t say we’ll get to fixing it, you would jump in and make sure everyone including you can fix it.

Anyways ok end of rant. Blessings to everyone who read this lol 😂

My first SM was amazing. He was always on the floor and he'd come in even when not scheduled if the floor was short and we were desperate. He scheduled himself 8 hours of noncoverage each week to do the schedule and the other "manager things" and he got everything done on Monday. Rest of the week he was on the floor helping. My current SM schedules herself for 32 hours a week, at least 24 of which are noncoverage. She sits in the back even during her floor coverage shifts, and half the time she leaves early.

So yeah, tldr SMs can and should be on the floor when needed, but some just don't give a shit

Every SM should be like your first SM!! Then the world would be a better place. If you’re employees are happy then they’ll like coming to work —> good work environment —> customers can feel those good vibes Starbucks wants to show.

Unfortunately I’ve literally had my SM tell us to smile more. Imagine telling your girl baristas to smile when women have to hear that BS every day. That fake smile shit killed me 😭

You hit the nail on the head. They are either being coached to be or are under the impression that they need to be “the bad guy” and schedule coverage based strictly on metrics, instead of common sense.

They are trying to impress leadership and show that they can play the game.
