Went to a Dutch Bros and they don't do cash right now. Including no cash tips. Seems like they're taking covid more seriously than we are. I'm jealous.
Also, does anybody know why Starbucks doesn't do credit tips? For a company as big as Starbucks, you'd think they would. We'd be making way more, that's for sure! Hell, even my little bagel shop job before this (small bagel/coffee joint) made more tips than Starbucks since they accepted credit tips!

Someone told me once that you would then get taxed on your tips. But I’ve also worked at another job that did credit tips and got taxed, and I’d just prefer the extra tips tbh. idc if it’s taxed

Our tips are already taxed. Starbucks reports our tips as 50¢/hour and it’s technically our responsibility to report anything over 50¢/hour to the IRS.

my manager told me it’s bc our goal is fast window times and when we have to give someone a receipt or tablet or whatever to add a tip it slows everything down :/

Oof. :/ Doesn't seem like it takes much time, but I guess it adds up.

It’s because Starbucks has that whole POS system already. It’s terrible and old, but they’d have to get all new computers and systems to be able to do credit tips. The other thing they could do is allow credit tipping through the card reader, but that is kinda tacky. When every person has to be brought to a “tip?” menu before they can pay. Starbucks doesn’t want that hurting their brand.

honestly i don’t like the idea of having a card reader to get tips, bc so many people that come to my store already don’t know how to use the card reader and i don’t think i could take having to explain the concept of tips also lmao

Lol

You can do them on the app
Unipanther368 [OP]1 points2y ago
Ah gotcha. Not at my location then. I work at an Albertsons Starbucks.

Card tips wouldn't be conducive to the fast drive thru model. Maybe if they ever update FOH POS it could work there, but never in drive. That's why they want people to use their app
Unipanther368 [OP]1 points2y ago
That's interesting. Only takes a moment to enter a tip, but I guess that time does add up. I also just now learned you could tip through the app. Wasn't aware that was a thing (I work at an Albertsons Starbucks).

First of all, cash is legal tender and covers all debts.
Section 31 of U.S.C. 5103, entitled "Legal Tender":
"United States coins and currency [including Federal reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal reserve banks and national banks] are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes, and dues."
So Starbucks will never be cashless. And it should be illegal that anyone is cashless.
Second, when there are records of our tips from a POS system they can and will be taxed. Starbucks estimates our tips at 50 cents an hour and includes that in our pay statement, which is taxed. That system actually helps us because we can not report our actual tips. If we had card tips, everything would be recorded and we would be required to report them and we may have to pay any taxes that weren’t taken out

Ahhh, gotcha. Thanks!

I think in some twisted way they don’t want credit tips because they want EVERYONE to have the app. But they also make tipping on the app difficult so wtf.
