Creating a great “2ND” Place first (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by yeckels
So, Starbucks is supposed to be that “3rd place” where people can come and feel like they’re in a welcome environment that they enjoy and it’s our job to create that 3rd place experience for them, right?
Why doesn’t Starbucks also focus on creating a great SECOND place (work) for its partners, first?! I’m over here stressing out over a job I promised myself I wouldn’t let get stressful. I left a fucking tech company job to have very few responsibilities at work and have low stress, but no. Not happening.

because us having a good second place would obviously take away from customers having a great third place. /s

seriously though i feel the same. if my second place is filled with people who think they can scream at me for asking them to wear a mask and cite the third place bs as their reason for not wanting to wear a mask maybe we need to change who gets to feel comfortable a little.

Thank you for saying this!

It majorly stresses me out that we are supposed to be increasing customer connection in drive through... when saod customers are also complaining about feeling sick and not masking. Like I don’t want to catch anything for the store’s scores sorry.
official_koda_ 7 points 2y ago
We don’t have any incentive for getting the scores up anyways...we shouldn’t care. Like it’s so dumb. Maybe they should pay us more if they want the stupid score to go up.

After handing a customer their card back they told me, "you should probably go wash your hands" like, excuse me? What? What are you out here speaking you need to tell people to wash after dealing with you?

Yeah I’m glad tonight I was doing the awkward “hold the scanner out the window thing” and not touching her card after all... blehhh
yeckels [OP] 2 points 2y ago
We’re required to wear gloves at the window. Maybe that will help?

I feel the same way😩😩

Yeah I wish starbucks had an employee lounge with a microwave so I could bring my own food

It’s pretty ridiculous we don’t even get a damn break room
yeckels [OP] 3 points 2y ago
Yeah, seriously. Sitting in the back room in front of the computer where literally all of our lids and cups are stored, the phone is ringing off the hook so we gotta answer on our break, etc. it’s bullshit.
official_koda_ 5 points 2y ago
It’s basically my managers desk so half the time he’s sitting in the chair and I have to sit in the cafe. There’s just one sitting area in the back.

I can tell when people are rushed or stressed out a lot of the time and it would be more effective to make both parties comfortable.

THANK YOU

Yessss us having human emotions and reactions should also be normalized when we’re treated like work dogs AND get yelled at by stupid assholes that come in🙃

What would you suggest?
yeckels [OP] 7 points 2y ago
A place where I don’t feel guilty for taking my break/am not required to wait in a peak line that will take my entire 10 min break just to get something to drink during my shift. A place where I wasn’t getting inconsistently trained on what to do and what not to do at certain stations so I don’t feel like a fucking idiot trying to “obey” the rules that only certain shifts care about. A place where there’s a fucking seat for people in the back room to sit on a break and eat something where I’m not constantly being bombarded with questions of what I can take care of once I’m back. Just to start with a few.
