I need help getting this job at Starbucks(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by justdancekitty
Hi guys, im just gonna get straight to the point. Im 16 ( turning 17 next month ), transgender and a Junior. In April i applied at starbucks didn't get hired due to Covid, so i reapplied in august and just got a call from the manger. The manger and i had a conversation my schedule and what day/ time i can come. She said that she can give me mid- shifts during the weekday which is 12pm to 5 but the problem is my school doesn't end til 2:20. I dont know if i should contact my school if so what should i say. I didn't wait 6 months to be turned away i really want this job cause it would help me transition please tell me what i can do.

Unfortunately, if those are the only shifts they can give, you should consider applying elsewhere. You can’t just change your school schedule and you can always find a different job

Hey, I would try contacting every Starbucks you’d be willing to drive to for work. Every location has different needs, and maybe one of them is looking for closers instead of midday baristas. Even if the store is a little far away, it’s a lot easier to transfer stores once you’ve been hired, and it’s worth the insurance benefits

Hi, thank you for responding. I have another Starbucks a little farther than the Starbucks I applied to. My concern is that if I do transfer from the other location to the one I preferred wouldn’t I still have the same problem of where she can’t accommodate to my school schedule ?

Things can change so much in a short amount of time. Right now that’s the availability she needs but in the future you can coordinate with her and figure something out if you’re still seriously consider transferring. People will quit, change their availability, transfer, etc so she might have availability that works for you in the future.

If those are the only shifts you might want to find somewhere else to go. The only other advice is just show up prepared and do your best. If you don’t get hired, it’s not the end of the world, but you know what not to do in an interview now. Good luck. 👍🏻

It may sound blunt and I don’t mean to make it sound rude in any way, and working around school really sucks. I work full time at two jobs as a full time student and barely sleep, and let me tell you now that it isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Sure, Starbucks helps with your transition, but also take care of yourself first. Make sure you’ll be able to work and keep up your homework, because if you don’t you’re royally fucked if you want to get a higher education. I really do wish you good luck though, and if you apply and get the job, don’t let the first two weeks get to you...they’re rough.

I honestly need some advice since were both transgender. I read that Starbucks has really good insurance for trans people. I’m 17 not out yet to my unsupported family so I honestly don’t know if I should use the benefits that Starbucks offers me since I’m not fully out. Especially since I’m underage I would need a parent consent to start transitioning medical wise.

I’m not sure there’s much you can do even with their insurance because of parental consent. I personally would ride it out until I was 18, and then start working towards your transition. I know being told to wait sucks, and every time in the past when I was told to wait I would get heavily upset, but when I did get older I realized it’s the best choice for your health and safety.

I honestly don’t mind, I rather have people be upfront of what they have to say instead of leading me on. My grades last quarter sucked ( a,b,c’s ) only had one A out of my seven classes and I know I could do better than that. I’m trying to focus on myself and school at the same time but I’m slowly coming back. I’ve applied to a different location hopefully it doesn’t take 6 months like my other job application.

Don’t try to rush things too fast, make sure you take care of your responsibilities. It took me 6 years to start testosterone, but I go to the best art school in the country because I did wait it out. Transitioning is a very long, lifelong process, and rushing it is more likely to damage than to heal. Take care of yourself. 💕

Maybe consider applying to Target Starbucks or other non-corporate stores. I recently started working at Tarbucks in July (with prior experience). Literally 6 out of 11 of the staff is in their senior year of high school (some started as early as 16). Not sure if it’s typical for Target to hire this many teenagers but for some reason, my store hired a ton of them.
