Green Bean Advice (self.starbucksbaristas)

So I just finished my last day of training and it’s been a hectic time. The manager who hired me isn’t my store manager (she’s been hiring for the district and sending us all over) and I still haven’t officially met the manager for my store. My training has taken place between 3 different stores and in 3 days. Most of the training happened in a cafe style Starbucks and my official Starbucks has a drive through. This whole process has been all over and really confusing.

Anyway, today I did my last day of training and focused on drive through and on top of everything else I am so overwhelmed and stressed out. I only took this job because my other one is closed for the pandemic and I fully intend to return to them once they reopen. I just knew after leaving today that this wasn’t for me. I just felt like I was getting in the way. At one point they had me practice bar and I had no clue what I was doing. I feel bad wasting the companies time on training but I don’t really feel like I want to stay with Starbucks.

What should I do?

It’s extremely common to feel overwhelmed after training and I can’t imagine how it feels being moved around so much. I know everyone’s situation is different, but I’d encourage you to try to stick it out until you find another job at least. Generally the job will get easier with time but it is totally respectable if you are certain it’s not for you

i'm so sorry you've had such a rough time with training!! hopefully your home store is much more organized. i know it will be rough, but please talk to your manager about your concerns. hopefully they will hear you out and understand, and do their best to help either get you retrained, revisit where you're struggling, or whatever else may help you!! everyone struggles after training at first, but the situation you're describing sounds downright overwhelming and terrifying. it makes perfect sense you feel utterly lost and like this isn't right for you!

if the manager isn't really willing to hear you out or work with you, then quit. it's not a good place for you to be, if that's the case. you don't owe the company anything; it's just a job. people get trained and stay for years, a week. hell, my store had a guy quit one day into training a couple months back. it's unfortunate, but part of running a business. sometimes people don't work out, and there's nothing wrong with that.

stick it out. if you feel uncomfortable dont be afraid to be transparent and voice it. the company is going through harsh times and no one will fault you for being new. ask questions while on bar and if it helps take notes. just stick it out, they have taken care of us partners better than most companies during the pandemic.

Fellow matured green bean here. I was also overwhelmed when I first started, and now going onto I believe three months I’ve gotten a grasp of being able to handle drive thru ordering and register. It just takes some time but once you do it enough it’s second hand knowledge. Same for the bar, I used to panic every time I was on the bar but more recently they’ve thrown me on cafe bar and I’d make the drinks no problem. It all just takes time to learn. Starbucks training isn’t meant to teach you everything only to introduce you to it. You’ll learn as you go I promise.

I’m so sorry to here that! :( I can’t imagine how stressed and lost you are. But don’t worry! I can’t guarantee it’ll get better because the whole world is going through a shit show. But don’t be afraid to ask questions! I just finished training two partners today and I gave them note pads so they can write down whatever they think is important. Starting off working in such a fast paste environment can be overwhelming, but like someone commented, it’s just a job and it’s completely fine if you don’t feel like it’s for you. And trust me, you’re not wasting anybody’s time! You’re learning so it’s okay to be a little slow. I don’t think you should quit yet though. Try talking to your manager and tell them what’s going on. And if they’re not willing to help and work with you then that’ll be your answer. Don’t let anyone step on you!! You’ve got got this!! :D
