Wow She sounds dreadful. There’s no reason to badmouth you when she’s leaving.
rabbitmom1999 7 points 2y ago
yeah i don’t get it especially bc I don’t even work at that store anymore like what purpose does it serve
proletarithot 25 points 2y ago
If appropriate, ask her about it. Partners at my store like to stir shit up sometimes by gossiping or exaggerating. I really hate it, and as a shift I either shut down or redirect the conversation.

Whoever told you about what your trainee said didn’t have to tell you, especially since the trainee quit. Try not to take it personally, and reserve judgment until you can talk to the trainee directly. That way, if they really meant you were a poor trainer, you can get the constructive criticism you’re looking for.
rabbitmom1999 3 points 2y ago
I agree this is all very gossip-y but sometimes I just can’t help myself. I probably won’t confront her directly but I might talk to my current manager about her opinions Re: my performance as a trainer, seeing as I trust her judgment just a little more

I mean this job is not meant for some people. Been a partner for 8 years and the only reasons you should stay is for the benefits and the people who you have made relationships with. I'm working in my 3rd store and these are some of the most chill people I've ever worked with in my 8 years. I think it's the vibe that they need to get used to. Cuz my current store is a high volume store and some green beans need to understand that when we get busy, we get busy, but that doesn't mean crack under pressure. I'm sure you're a great barista trainer. Do not be discouraged! You were chosen as a trainer for a reason so keep at it!
rabbitmom1999 1 points 2y ago
yeah the store she was at and that I left is a super high volume DT and she might not have been able to handle it. which is totally understandable! if it’s not for her that’s fine. i just don’t like that she had to go talking shit about me you know lol
yikes153 13 points 2y ago
Wtf who blames their trainer? I’ve never seen a barista trainer actually be that bad that they felt the need to quit. Most learning happens on the job. If she was struggling, it was because of her own lack of skills, not the way you trained her. At the end of the day this is a pretty easy job with drinks being the hardest thing to learn.
rabbitmom1999 3 points 2y ago
I don’t even think she lacks skills necessarily, like she got promoted for a reason, it’s just that store is super high volume, high turnover, very overwhelming for anyone. no shame in admitting that, and no need to blame me for it
Assiqtaq 5 points 2y ago
She felt the need to blame someone other than herself or those she might need to rely on in the future for her future. You were just convenient. It means nothing. Let it wash past you.
rabbitmom1999 1 points 2y ago
I will try 🙃 I just care way too much what people think of me lol
Assiqtaq 1 points 2y ago
Take my word for it, this girl is not thinking about you at all except that you were convenient to blame without it being likely to backfire on her. Your worry will be if co-workers believe her over you, and you have to deal with that. But that will likely be dealt with by you just doing what you need to do, so unlikely to harm you seriously or for long.
The_Septic_Shock 1 points 2y ago
I agree, she probably also felt really unprepared for the shift and probably shouldn't have been promoted but was maybe the best out of who they had (which happens a lot). Not a lot of people will come out and say, "well I just suck!"

I guess my point is you were gone, not coming back, she was gone, thought it'd never get back to you since you'd probably never see them again, and decided to burn the bridge herself. I do that more than I care to admit because I'm kind of an asshole :p
rabbitmom1999 1 points 2y ago
that is what happened from my understanding. my DM really liked her previous customer service experience (worked at Disney) and the store only had two shift managers at the time, with a store manager just coming back from an extended (6 month) maternity leave so I can imagine that they might have pressured her into it somewhat.

whatever the case may be, if she felt overwhelmed or just not ready that’s a totally fine and understandable reason to ask for a demotion or to quit! I don’t think anyone would have shamed her for that. but I just don’t get why she felt the need to toss my name around as part of her reasoning, especially considering that she never seemed to have a problem with me, in fact we seemed to get along quite well.
The_Septic_Shock 1 points 2y ago
Definitely, completely understandable
anselgrey 3 points 2y ago
Sounds like she needs to deflect responsibility onto someone else and you were an easy scapegoat.
tiffers99 2 points 2y ago
One of my coworkers told me when I was training my first trainee, that it’s 20% trainer and 80% trainee. If this trainee is blaming you likely they’re mad that they just couldn’t handle it.... it really isn’t your fault!
i-am-lizard-queen 2 points 2y ago
Ugh, this happened to me a couple of times. I had trainees that would go off and be perfectly fine. And then there were two that just could not get a hang of the whole barista thing. Of course, when our manager spoke to them about it, they both blamed me for their failings. Thankfully, my SM would get so pissed at any of the trainees who did this because he knew I was a quality trainer and I spent tons of extra time trying to help them. At my store, at least, the culture was kind of a “you’re responsible for your own problems” kind of thing. They both ended up quitting after a few months, so 🤷🏽‍♀️
Babs9220 2 points 2y ago
I would totes call her out on it and ask her why she thought I was so bad that she needed to tell everyone yet hide it from me
rabbitmom1999 1 points 2y ago
ooof I am way too afraid of confrontation for that 😅
Babs9220 1 points 2y ago
Lol I used to be that way but have definitely gotten over it. Want me to do it for you? 🤣
Luv_1313 1 points 2y ago
that person just wanted to blame you. Have to point the finger at you for them being a quitter. What a loser. 😂😂🤣
Luv_1313 1 points 2y ago
My fellow barista ☕🍵 I know the feeling. But just remember your great at your job because if you weren't why would you train new Comer's. Hands off ✋ to you and much love. I appreciate you 🤗💓.

When I was a barista trainer, I would get blamed for the weirdest stuff. Very specifically, my trainees would be great on bar (what they wanted me to make them very good at) but couldn't make iced tea (brewing it). Legit every single one came up with a new way to make iced tea wrong. They used a single hot tea bag, left the teabag in, or added only ice (no water) just to name a few.

My point is, it's not the trainer's fault. There is only so much information one person can absorb in a given time frame. So don't let that get you down.
Spvnishcxndie 1 points 2y ago
It makes no sense why she would blame you...I would be annoyed too but oh well she just couldn’t handle it

I think the part that gets to me the most out of everything is just the fact that she blames me and my training ability (at least partly) for her struggling as a shift manager. like even if I am the worst trainer ever, what does that have to do with being a shift??

Two faced bitch. Nuff said. Don't take it to heart , people like her will find a way to blame anything they can on anyone other than themselves.
