Requiring training be completed on 10's (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Doofensmirtz77
How acceptable is it to require baristas complete training on their tens?

Especially if they only work a 5.45 and a ten is all they get.
I would love ssv and barista feedback/ pov on this.

It is 100% unacceptable and against policy. No work should be done on your ten and training is work. Often the SSVs/managers at my store will tell us to go do the training THEN take a ten.

*Any* kind of work on your breaks is unacceptable.

Hard nope. No training on break. If it's being enforced - call ethics & compliance. I don't find them to be helpful but at least it starts a "paper trail".

The rationale I was given was, " It doesn't just suck for you, it sucks for everyone."

I work peak, I only get that ten to drink and mentally regroup and run to bathroom.

I did it because I wanted to be a team player and not make waves, but I still resent it.

Keep note of it and see if it happens to anyone else: that’s not okay and if it happens again or multiple times you can report that

Definitely *not* okay, working off the clock is wage theft
xboxturtle 2 points 2y ago
While definitely not okay, it technically isn’t wage theft because 10s are paid.

It is, however, theft of break time.
Captain_Killy 1 points 2y ago
Ethically yes, legally m, depends on the state. My state has no break requirements, just requires that people be given time to eat a meal every six hours. That time can be a break, or while still working, and there’s no set amount. We also need reasonable access to bathrooms. But even our measly tens are Starbucks are above what the state actually requires.

But Starbucks policy is to give breaks, so it is theft of break time to force you to work during them. Whether or not it’s illegal would vary from state to state.
