TarBux: can’t sit when it’s DEAD (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Independent_Stress47
So we are literally dead probably 75% of the day because there is a stand alone starbucks down the road. I have back issues so standing for 8+ hours HURTS. I brought my own little stool to sit on when there is nothing to do. Even when cleaning stocking and everything is done. It doesn’t take up any room. The Leader of Guest services told me I can’t sit unless I have a medical reason and took it from me. She isn’t even my boss.

If it belongs to you demand it back. They might be able to tell you not to use it but they have no right to take your property.

yeah, no they legally cannot confiscate your property even if it’s against the rules. ask for it back (and go to their superior if they don’t return it) and then use it in secret. you can’t do your job effectively without that stool period

Also if you do have back issues, maybe get a note from a doctor acknowledging that? Doing it the official way works sometimes.

Trying to use it in secret is a bad idea. If they're in customer view, they're gonna be in view of a million other employees who could draw management attention either by complaining or asking for their own stool. If OP puts it in the BOH, they're gonna catch heat for not being available to serve customers. Plus, most tarbux share a BOH area with the snack stand/pizza hut or whatever your local target has. The other employees might throw it away or misplace it purely by accident.

If OP really can't stand for 8 hours at a time (and there's no shame in that!) then they should have minimal trouble getting a doctor to write them a note requesting accommodation either via shorter shifts, a different position in the store that can be done seated, or the ability to sit for a certain percentage of their shift.

Unfortunately, this just isn't how corporate America operates. I'm not trying to defend the logic, but at a big corporate retail chain like Target or Starbucks, they're never gonna let you sit without a doctors note. They're gonna say that if they let one do it, they have to let everyone do it, and some will take advantage. They're also gonna say that, especially in a food service environment, the stool would be a tripping hazard. But if you get a doctor's note, they'll be pretty powerless and will almost certainly accommodate you. Plus, you won't have to wait for a slow period to sit as a doctor is probably gonna say something like "needs to sit for x minutes out of every hour". Other options include making sure your work area has anti-fatigue mats or looking for a job in a sector where working on your feet isn't the norm. I hope you find something that works for you!
