Can SMs change availability without talking to us first?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by thelonelycheesestick
I had an approved schedule from late September, and just recently noticed that she changed it the beginning of October without discussing it with me.
Im really upset since Ive been very upfront and open with her about how I've been feeling and what I need for my mental health.

This is 100% percent not okay, you’re availability is completely your control and she definitely should have had a conversation with you first before even making any changes to it. If I were you I would just straight up tell her “that’s outside of my availability” and find some one to switch shifts with.

My problem is that she changed the availability in the first place. Ive had,, many,, issues to say the least with her, and I dont even know how to confront this. If I talk to her will she just say tough luck?
She also has the ability to retaliate against me without it ever looking like it, and its incredibly degrading and hard to prove. Any and all advice appreciated.

Commenting cause I would like to know too. Ive been very vocal with my sm about my needs and she changed my availability without telling me.

Yeah are there laws in place for this? My SM keeps denying by availability, and then schedules me outside of it. It’s not working.

As far as I have seen your availability can get denied, thats fully within their capabilities. But my circumstances were that they approved and then changed it.

*sniffs 👃🏼very dramatically* I smell a PRC case forming 🧐 Contact your DM asap! As well as opening a PRC case! That’s no accident. I’m pretty sure it’s a federal labor law too. Take pictures of the screen you’re looking at with your availability asap, for your records. It will say when the availability was approved or adjusted.

The things I have experienced:
>Being written up for coming in late the day my aunt died.
.
>Being written up for not knowing I worked that day because the SM changed the schedule way after she should have over and over WITHOUT TELLING ANYONE, and the last information I had was that I didnt work that day. This one is less ridiculous because I guess I could have checked again (this was after returning from covid leave) but I maintain that its still ridiculous.
.
>Being given a final write up when the other write ups were for a completely seperate thing. (Time issues vs being "approachable") and not being allowed any kind of conversation before hand to correct the behavior before getting that final write up. This consequently pushes me into a corner for transferring because I was told that I final write up meant that I wouldnt be allowed to tranfer unless something like a move would prompt one, and Im not moving just to move stores -_-.
.
>Trying to have a conversation with a problem shift about the very agressive way they were talking to me + unreasonable expectations placed on me, to which they proceeded to send me home and call the manager. They knew that this could definitely get me fired and I maintain the stance that this actual was an attempt to get me fired.
>When I called the manager to attempt to tell my side of what happened (to which ... you guessed it - was a completely different story from the shifts perspective) and told "you need to have a conversation with them first before you come to me"
>When I stated that "I tried to, and their response was to send me home" I got: "Well they asked you if you wanted to be there and you said no" "No, that's not right. In fact, they said they felt like I didnt want to be there and I responded that I really did want to be there, I was just having issues with how they were treating me". Then I got "im just hearing that you arent really hearing each other"
>Aka: Blatant favoritism to shifts vs baristas. This is very common unfortunately.
.
>Being told that by my SM that there really just isnt room for a light duty partner on her team when I inquired about some accommodations (how I would get the process started) due to serious foot pain.
.
>And now my SM tampering with my availability.
.
👀👀👀 Ive been looking at other jobs. What exactly does a PRC do? Ive only been here since Febuary.

So each of those incidents are screaminggggg violations. ESPECIALLY the light duty. Like are you kidding me? 😒That’s like a federal law that they can’t discriminate against you; they know better 😒. I can’t say too much on here about my specific issue, but been there done that (SM and the shift are now fired). PRC is basically HR but not about benefits and things; it’s for issues with your management, LOA, bereavement, etc. Your conversations are all confidential (you can verify that with the agent before you start talking). You explain the situation and ask what your options are etc. Before you call tho, take pictures of everythinggggg justifying your case. Any kind of evidence. Even nonchalantly ask a couple *trusted* coworkers if they had similar issues with this shift or have witnessed your bad interactions. WITHOUT saying why! You’re just *curious*. Also reach out to your DM. Say you would like a private meeting about an urgent matter. When you do talk, explain all of what is going on. And that you feel targeted and singled out. “Messing with your availability” and “confrontational supervisors” are trigger words that DMs can’t ignore. I don’t think you should tell your DM what your PRC agent said are your options. But you’ll know if you need to. I sincerely hope that particular store does not put a sour taste in your mouth about this company 😞. Trust me when I say I’ve LITERALLY been in your exact shoes. I wanted to quit and give up. Now, I’m at an AMAZING store! My coworkers are like family to me. I got promoted (off of merit not guilt). My manager actually gives a shit about me and the store, personally. I’ve been here at this store for about 2 years now. And further promotions are in motion. Like any company, Starbucks has their share of shitty stores. But please don’t let that color how you see Starbucks❤️. I hope others will see this too! This plan I described can be used for similar situations! Regardless of your position!

Ive spoken to my DM about most of this, but who (and how) do I contact for a pdc? I have discussed these issues with multiple coworkers (just frustrated complaining) and there has been a couple of other people whove been treated poorly.
amberleemae2 points2y ago
If this threat gets deleted, just google “Starbucks prsc number” “Partner resource support center”
amberleemae2 points2y ago
That is a number for the first step. You may have to call the harassment and discrimination line if don’t handle it (I’m 99.9% sure they will tho. But just like in the link, it’s (800) 611-7792

PRC: Available M-F, 5 a.m. – 5 p.m. Pacific Time (866) 504-7368, Option 5
She is 100% not allowed to do this. Make sure you send her an email in writing and document it, that you will not be working the shifts outside your availability and that she needs to schedule it within the availability you agreed on not the one she created. If she has a problem with this, report her. SMs will take advantage of you let them, HR is there for your benefit.

Also make sure you add the date that the original availability was accepted. You can find it in Partner hours. It will help back up your case.
Js_On_My_Yeet2 points2y ago
Definitely cannot do that. This was a reoccurring problem with multiple partners (including myself) with my previous SM. She had to transfer because of that. One of us reported what she was doing to the DM, but she's lucky she kept her job.
