Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

Y’all, I’m just trying to get paid while minding my business (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Loose-Thoughts
/rant.

I had just transferred from a café store to a drive-thru store and one day before my shift ended I started to prep some vanilla sweet cream. I went ahead and poured 1 liter of heavy cream into a clear pitcher when a girl that came to replace me starts getting all huffy and puffy saying I wasn’t following standards. I had just gotten back from FMLA and was certain I was following the correct procedures. I asked her how she felt it should have been done and she proceeded to tell me, ‘the standard way of doing it is in a metal pitcher, you’re not following standards and you should just clock out and I’ll fix your mistake.’ (We are both baristas. She is 2 months in and I have been with the company over a year, and I have no doubt she’s a hard worker already) I then, quickly, grabbed my store manager and asked him if the standards had changed back to the old way or if I was following the correct recipe. He had told her the recipe and reassured me I was doing my job correctly. I then finished and went to the back to clock out and overheard her saying I was a rat for objecting her in front of the store manager.

I have so much patience, but I just can’t fathom being treated so poorly by my new partner when I busted my ass opening a type of store I wasn’t familiar with.

Thank you for letting me share.

/end-rant.

that partner should've stayed in her lane. you were absolutely in the right for putting her in her place and I bet she won't open her mouth to correct you again.
Craftyallthetime 133 points 2y ago
She told you that you weren’t doing it right so you asked your manager to confirm the procedure for the both of you. How is that “ratting her out”?

Sounds like someone was taught wrong… her.
radpandaparty 32 points 2y ago
> you’re not following standards and you should just clock out and I’ll fix your mistake.’

Man I'm a shift and I would hate to work with that. No one who has been with the company longer than a few months follows standard 100% of the time. What a cow
mgoodwin1631 32 points 2y ago
You were absolutely in the right, and she absolutely should have stayed in her place.

The recipe sheet literally says "in a 2 liter pitcher" like ???????

Edited: I just can't spell
Js_On_My_Yeet 19 points 2y ago
Lol. When that happens I usually ask them how long they been with the company. Chances are I've been with them longer and just keep doing my thing. If they wanna talk shit then I let them, cuz it doesn't help their image at all. Do not be afraid to argue if you got more experience under your belt 👍🏼

HAH. My SM is hiring like crazy and some of our new green beans sometimes like to tell me how to do things yet I’ve been there almost a year. Like HOLD UP. They don’t see me a lot because I’m now only working two days since I’m also doing school and another job. Thinking I’m new too.
So I felt this.
Nigee_Ogee 7 points 2y ago
Whoever trained them is the culprit behind it all lol. There’s a new person at my store and his trainer is SO BY THE BOOK. I’ve been here over a year so I obviously know the right way of doing things but now I take harmless shortcuts like everyone else. One time I didn’t fill the milk exactly up to the first line on the cup and the new employee says “aren’t you supposed to make sure it’s exactly at the line?”. I know what I’m doing!! Lol.
spromari 3 points 2y ago
what kind of newbie does that, honestly? i mean as the new kid, everyone should know what they’re trained to do, but they should also have the common sense to watch what more seasoned employees actually do. historically whenever i’ve gotten the pedantic nag, i just give the stfu side-eye. works every time.
Nigee_Ogee 1 points 2y ago
That’s what I’m going to start doing! Giving the stfu side eye haha!
maRkmyvvoRds 12 points 2y ago
It’s posts like these that make me so fucking happy I am no longer under the siren’s spell.

Life’s too short for all that. Starbucks is microfascism at its worst.

I get reprimanded for ONLY using 1L of heavy cream in sweet cream. Everyone tells me I need to add more heavy cream because the foam is too runny but I’ve seen them make drinks with my sweet cream and the foam is perfect?? I’ve come in on my day off and got a Salted caramel cold foam cold brew and the entirety of the foam sank into the drink two minutes after receiving it so it’s definitely some else making crappy sweet cream. They should start looking at the people who free pour their measurements.

y'all should also check your HWC cause in a few recent orders my store has gotten jugs labelled as HWC but they were actually whole milk and it 100% throws the VCS off
kait_lynb 6 points 2y ago
Wow someone has a god complex, she needs to be knocked off her high horse!
lea-oppalove 5 points 2y ago
You were the bigger one for trying to ensure standards, and trust me I know from transferring stores, this may not be the last time you have to double check standards with the manager and other partners. You were just doing your job, and this new partner was embarrassed and immature about it. They'll get over it. Lol
violodolo 5 points 2y ago
You were absolutely doing it the right way. Take this opportunity to find out how to talk to partners in uncomfortable situations. I have to correct my SM or deal with him incorrectly correcting me all the time in front of 6-7 people. By now every time he has a question he comes to me, and our relationship is better from it. I used to hate him
ayagirltruth 5 points 2y ago
That’s absolutely the most professional and kind way to stop someone from criticizing you. You didn’t « rat » her out, in fact you did her a favor by showing her the right way to make a 2Lp pitcher of sweet cream (god only knows how she was making it..).
I have had similar things happen to me and you deserve so much more than this treatment.
Please talk to someone at your new store that you trust about her talking behind your back, and we are always here for you too.
Your amazing self and work ethic will shine by itself, but please make sure you have people that will back you up as well.
ladycali87 5 points 2y ago
We gotta put vsc in cubes, so many cubes...
People are foam crazy this year, I couldn't imagine making it any other way now haha
PlantKrys 5 points 2y ago
Wtf? There’s even an ingredient card. Updated and everything. It’s been updated because the demand for VSC had increased, so we make larger quantities now. That’s so rude of her. Good on your part to confront the store manager. I’m sorry you had to go through that, the last thing I’d want in my store is to be battling baristas and not just the customers. :(
wuxtrywuxtry 4 points 2y ago
I had a green bean get short with me because I asked for ice (there was 'ice in other bins' and she was too busy. All of the ice was low smh). She also got mad at me for finishing an espresso con panna, after I already redid the shots for it because they were totally dead and she was nowhere to be found.

Yeah she quit...
spartasmomma 3 points 2y ago
Some people really just care way too much about this job lol
sweetangel622 3 points 2y ago
People need to chill about standards. Not that we shouldn’t follow them but no need to get so upset.
howdudo 3 points 2y ago
wowwwww fuck them i hope they quit yesterday!!
sizzlesfantalike 3 points 2y ago
As a 256xxxx who’s only working 2 days a week now, the 292xxxx have a lot to say with standards to me. Good that they’re fresh in your head, unless you’re gonna do all the tasks, I’m still doing mine the way it says on paper thanks.
Koalastars009 3 points 2y ago
I’ve worked with tons of people like that. Try to be overly nice to her. Like saying good morning when one of you gets into work. It’ll either drive her crazy or you might make a new acquaintance
pres_ofcanada 3 points 2y ago
So what’s this new recipe? 😬
cs_phoenix 14 points 2y ago
In a 2 liter tea/ice coffee pitcher mix 1 liter of heavy cream, 350mL of vanilla syrup (measured with cold foam pitcher), and then fill the rest of the remaining space with 2% (to the 2 liter line). Way faster and easier than the old way.
jayessdubs 11 points 2y ago
Important note - whisk it. Whisk it whisk it whisk it once everything is all together.
I know some partners who don't , and it hurts the foam consistency down the line
cs_phoenix 4 points 2y ago
Yeah I purposely said mix but I definitely could have been more clear. The vanilla and heavy cream are so dense so they definitely do not mix properly without whisking!
boxinghamster16 7 points 2y ago
Its actually 600 ml of 2%, not to the 2L line. It ends up just below it! It may not seem like a big difference but as my stores permanent cold foam maker (😂) I can say it definitely makes a difference in consistency.
caffein8dnotopi8d 2 points 2y ago
It does indeed. I always do the 600 mL but many partners at my store freepour 😅

Had this problem with another shift getting like this with me. I studied the Ops Excellence guide and called him out on his incorrect way of coaching. Needless to say, he is currently being reviewed for transfer.
deyesed 2 points 2y ago
Sorry to hear, that stings. My interpretation is that it's not personal, they're insecure and trying to flex a bit. They didn't have the context of your entire shift and they made some assumptions. You know the truth, which is that you did an amazing job on shift ♥️ and their SM backed you up.

What one of my SSVs always does is pull up the standard on the hub. Zero ego, just "we both care, so let's check and both be right."

My current approach is gentler than my old one. "Yes, that is the ratio of ingredients in the recipe. The current standard is the same, just scaled up to meet demand. Thank you for trying to look out for the team. However I felt upset when you spoke to me with discouraging language and immediately assumed I had made a mistake. Especially since I'm an experienced partner from another store who has helped you all day."
gpalmisiano 2 points 2y ago
Ive been doing 39 pumps of vanilla in the pitcher then milk up to 1 liter and heavy cream for the full 1 liter left, idk that’s how I was taught
[deleted] 3 points 2y ago
If 39 pumps is 350ml then it shouldn’t be a problem
deyesed 1 points 2y ago
That's too much milk, and it'll be harder to whisk to incorporate the fat from the heavy cream when it's poured on top.
greeneyedstarqueen 2 points 2y ago
PLEASE GO TO YOUR SM. Bullying of any kind, and to this extent, is warrant for a talk/write-up. Starbucks has ZERO TOLERANCE for bullying and harassment. Whoever she said that to, needs to be asked about it and confirmed. At the least, it’s a talk about GROWTH, and respecting each other. Your SM should have your back and follow procedures to nip this in the bud ASAP.

PLEASE OP, do not let this slide. Letting bullying slide behind the line only shows the bully that you WILL NOT go to your SM about it, which will allow it to continue, foster and fester.

PLEASE OP.
