Stores don’t guarantee hours to anyone and also it’s true most supervisors can get 40 but it’s rare for a barista to get 40 especially if you just got hired. You can speak to your manager about asking for more hours but I’m not sure how your store works and how your manager works. At my store baristas get 20-27 hours

See, stores don’t guarantee hours but my SM guaranteed it. Which is why I was confused - and that to me is annoying. Don’t guarantee something you can uphold... I do wonder if it has anything to do with my SM being an outside hire? But they have been with SB for almost a year. I just kinda feel bitter honestly, the only reason I took the job at the lower wage is I WANTED to work here, and I thought if I get hours at least it will make up for it. I was sadly mistaken.

Did you manager say, “Yes, I will absolutely give you 40 hours every week,” or did they say, “Yes, you can get up to 40 hours week,”? Because as the other commenter said, in the four years I’ve been with the company, I’ve never seen Starbucks flat out guarantee someone a set amount of hours. But I *have* heard them tell people that between the hours you’re scheduled and by picking up coworker’s shifts and shifts at other stores, you can get yourself up to 40 hours a week.

Not in those words no, just simply put. “I don’t see why not, many of our partners currently are working 40 hours a week.” I just assumed they meant that it would be doable and putting it like that has the potential to be misconstrued? Especially as a new hirer, I shouldn’t have to directly ask for clarification on how I would obtain those hours. In the 4 years that you have work for SB have you ever had a manager that was hired from outside the company and not one that was a barista before becoming a manager? My SM has been with company about a year and did not work their way up into the company. But had management experience in a restaurant prior.

So then your manager never actually guaranteed you 40 hours a week. I’m sure that someone mentioned that you can pick up your coworker’s shifts and that you can work at other stores. Just because you assumed something incorrectly doesn’t mean that you’ve been “swindled”.

And why, especially as a new hire, would you think you’re not expected to ask direct questions about things? How many weeks have gone by without you asking your manager about getting more hours? And instead of just asking, you’ve been letting it stew to where you think you’re being personally attacked and questioning your manager’s ability to do their job?

Nah, my dude. Your manager being an outside hire is not the issue here.
