Good Customers vs. Bad Customers (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by philosopher_cat_lady
The scene:
An adjacent Starbucks, the busiest one in the city, has closed that morning presumably due to COVID concerns. We're getting all their customers. It's Saturday, it's holiday season, and our team is four people. We've had to convert to drive-thru only.

Customer #1:
I hold out a drink to an old white man at my drive-thru window which is of course in a mug. I'm taking another customer's order at the same time. The man goes to grab the mug. I lower my arm so he'll grab the drink instead. He lowers his arm to go to grab the mug again. We do this a few times until he blurts out, "Give me my drink, goddamn it!" or some such. I say, "Don't take the mug, sir." What looks to be his granddaughter in the passenger's seat appears to tell him the same thing. He finally takes his drink, drives a bit forward, and makes sure I know how angry he is by turning back toward me and yelling, "FUCK!"

Customer #2:
One of our regulars, oddly enough another old white man, has previously spoken on the phone to our shift supervisor about what a shitty day we're having. He comes through the drive-thru simply to give us a $56 tip.

Be like Customer 2. That's the secret of life

Wow I wish my DT would convert to DT only. One of the busiest in my whole state.

We did it temporarily because we were too short-staffed to take orders at the front registers

i hope the good customers know how much better they make our days, even if it’s just simply being nice to us

Yeah, my shift supervisor told customer #2 that they made their day. It's sad that if a customer is nice to us it makes our day better to a significant extent given that the bar is pretty low for customers in food service.

I wish we were DT only and could use a cup to hand out drinks. I'm tired of people touching my hand as I barely hold the bottom of their cup to hand it off. I really don't want to hold hands with all the hundreds of people that come through my line 🙄

OMG yeah I hate that. People always touch my hands and I try so hard to make it so they don't. And we can't put the drinks in a mug because I was told "the customers tried to take it".

I would place it on the counter far away from them to reduce the chance of that happening. When that happens to me and I'm on any position but Drive-Thru Register, I go wash my hands. We've also started putting a cardboard sign on the hand-off plane so that customers have to reach over it to get their drinks. Are you using mugs in your drive-thru?
