Fake gift card scams? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by MariasGalactic
Hey guys,

I work at a licensed store.
We’ve had several people lately paying with weird gift cards on their phones. The gift cards say Starbucks but it’s not the same as the app or when people add their cards to their wallets.

Some people also pay with gift cards that were posted on Instagram or something. We’ve noticed the people using the weird app buy several things so the total is very high amounts, and they’ll come back another day and do it again.

Our head of security said to stop accepting them as payments, and we’ve heard they’re a scam.

Does anybody else experience this? And how does a scam like that even work?

The influencer one doesn’t seem as weird, as long as it looks like a normal gift card I’ll accept it.

There are also ones that T-Mobil and Verizon gives to its customers that don’t look normal because they aren’t connected to our app but they’re real. I would just casually bring it up next time you see it like “ oh I’ve never seen that type of gift card before! Is that one of the T-Mobil /Verizon ones?” As nicely and as smoothly as possible. If it isn’t one of those usually the customer just tells me what it it is.

One of our security says there’s like a fake Starbucks app some people use that’s like hacked. It just blows my mind, haha. I’ve seen ones used as rewards from places, but there’s really really weird ones
