Normal to struggle as a new barista, feeling anxious? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Butterflybo0ty
This is my second day training and I got taught all the cold and warm bar recipes/equipment. It was fun but when I got put onto the floor to do bar I struggled a bit with going quick enough, knowing all the drinks and got kind of anxious. Is this normal? Any tips on learning recipes? I can be a bit hard on myself lol, even though most of my fellow baristas are super nice I’m nervous my lack of knowledge is annoying them.

Something that really helped me was using the starbucks app. For each drink on the menu the app lays out everything in the drink. It's really helpful for memorizing the basics and then everything else is kinda playing off of those

hi! i’m also new, i’ve only been working for about a week and a half. but, the main thing i retained from my week of training was that you’re not going to know all of it perfectly for at least a couple months, and that everyone there has been in your shoes at some point in time! everyone at my store is always constantly encouraging me to ask as many questions as i need to, and also at the end of the day, it’s just coffee. if you mess up an order, it’s just coffee- make a new one and it’ll be okay.

i was super anxious as well, and still am some, but i hope this helps!

Thanks so much. Nice to know I’m not alone and eventually we’ll both be expert baristas lol. Although like u said it is just coffee, rly puts it in perspective.

Would you mind sharing with me as well? I have only trained on customer support but I would like to be prepared before training on bar so I don’t have information overload

i would also like to note that when i made it, i literally copied down everything on the training modules and put it into a slide. when you get to your computer training you’ll see that it’s all the same. i thought the computer stuff was really confusing so i tried to simplify and organize it in a way that works best for me.

Absolutely! This job demands a lot for not-enough training. It took me 3 months before I felt comfortable on bar and 6 to feel efficient. Be kind and patient to yourself. Take time to have human connections if you can, and use the "I'm just started here!" Excuse for as long as you can

I recently became a supervisor but prior to that I trained a lot of baristas, and I was a new barista a year ago too. Its so normal, it takes a little bit of
time, the best piece of advice I have is push yourself to improve instead of running away from it, and also ask anyone questions, most baristas have savior complexes so they'd probably be so happy you asked them a question.
