A new type of Karen. Has this happened to you? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by TheRedditTeacher
Today I had a customer who demanded a new drink in a NEW cup because I spelled her name wrong. Even though I spelled it the way she said! As she was walking out the store, I noticed her kid holding one of the 'bearista' stuffed animals they did NOT pay for. Me, still seeing good in people, assumed the kid grabbed it and the mother didn't see. I went after them to confront her. Her reply: 'I need to pay? I thought they were for free. Are you going to take this stuffed animal from a little kid?' At that point I had enough and said: 'Yes, yes I will'. I took the little bear and put him back on the shelf. I love my job, and kids, but this went too far!

She did not think they were free. She was banking on you feeling bad and letting her kid take it, hence her manipulative “you’re going to take a toy from a child???”
TheRedditTeacher [OP] 171 points 2y ago
I know. I did not let it get to me. She can now tell the kid why he doesn't have the toy.
alycrawford42- 43 points 2y ago
I’d be willing to bet she blames it on you, and not teach her kid a lesson about not stealing 😒
bellash20 5 points 2y ago
I LOVE THAT YOU DID THAT YES GIRL
LaurdAlmighty 5 points 2y ago
Lmfao she thought wrong
matroid21 117 points 2y ago
I love that "You're going to teach my child that stealing is wrong FOR ME????" attitude.
humiddefy 93 points 2y ago
She sounds like a scammer to me. Did she take the original drink with her as well? If someone wants a drink remade I usually take the original drink and dump it down the sink right in front of them, especially if it is over something so petty (I myself am quite petty). Some baristas will just let you take the extra drink and she was probably banking on getting a free drink that way and also getting her kid to jack a bear. That is what I would call Skaren or Scam Karen. I get them pretty frequently and they're always trying to get a free drink, usually by saying they had a drink made wrong four days ago or something.
SchemingPancake 17 points 2y ago
This was my first thought as well. Especially with the trying whole to guilt the barista to let her kid steal a toy thing.
seacookie89 8 points 2y ago
>they had a drink made wrong four days ago

Why tf would they expect you to do anything about it now? Should have came in four days ago, Skaren.
sunflowercupcakee 9 points 2y ago
Because ppl like my ASM or SM will always give them "the benefit of the doubt" even when the customer is a known scammer. Both came from other stores in the past month
seacookie89 2 points 2y ago
Stupid enablers.
humiddefy 3 points 2y ago
Idk but it seems like pretty common knowledge among these people that they have probably 75% chance of getting the drink they never bought remade. My boss always gives it to them the first time no matter how fishy their story is, then tells them next time they need their receipt and the drink itself. It's total bullshit but from his perspective it's probably easier to just give them the drink and get them out the door than to fight about it. I try to put up a lot of roadblocks between them and their drink but it doesn't always work.

You were going to involve your child in your shoplifting habit?

What planet is this creature from?

TheRedditTeacher [OP] 13 points 2y ago
I know right!
G37_is_numberletter 22 points 2y ago
Careful, going after shoplifters can be dangerous or cost you your job. Stay safe out there, folks.
TheRedditTeacher [OP] 19 points 2y ago
I know. My initial thought was however not that she stole it, this only became clear when I saw the look on her face when I approached her. I initially thought the kid just grabbed it and she didn't see it.
G37_is_numberletter 6 points 2y ago
Totally yeah I hope that didn’t come across as corrective, just for your safety more than anything. Times are crazy.
TheArtOfSuperstition 18 points 2y ago
The amount of absolute waste these Karens are responsible for is unbelievable. The amount of perfectly good produce grown, harvested, processed and shipped...down the damn drain. It makes me so angry. Unless someone accidentally made their drink with an allergen the customer can't have, it should never be allowed.
marilynmansonsbitch 7 points 2y ago
had a 6 shot mocha frap in dt today and had to make her a new one after i already gave it to her bc “extra mocha drizzle????” you got me FUCKED up.
stagstar 2 points 2y ago
Re drizzle the cup then pour in the existing frap. I’m not here for that kinda waste lol
marilynmansonsbitch 2 points 2y ago
she took the cup already before she said anything
sdkid92 2 points 2y ago
I’d poor it into a milk pitcher and remake it in the cup wash my hands and wash the pitcher. I’m not about to remake an entire drink for a reason like that. You can miss me with that bullshit.
cheekycatt 3 points 2y ago
SERIOUSLY! Instead of remaking drinks I want to just give them a recovery card. “We will get it right next time so sorry!” Byeeeeeee
TheRedditTeacher [OP] 3 points 2y ago
I know! Sometimes, when I like the drink they ordered I just drink ik myself. If my SSV approves of course.
sunnyismybunny 16 points 2y ago
Come on, op. This is on you.

It’s actually spelled A-S-S-H-O-L-E
TheRedditTeacher [OP] 5 points 2y ago
How? How is someone stealing something and using their kid for it on me?
ladyelenawf 20 points 2y ago
Breathe...they meant the misspelling of the name. I think there're wrong. It's really spelled *P-e-t-t-i B-i-t-c-h*, you know, with an "*i*" cause that makes it uNiQuE.
thrashnsass 12 points 2y ago
You have more restraint than I do. It's a shame it was just one of the little bears, otherwise I probably would have responded "Well, it's either I take the bear back or I call the cops for your theft."
bloodyspit 3 points 2y ago
i woulda just given her a new sticker lmao
TheRedditTeacher [OP] 9 points 2y ago
No, I poured it out like you said. I think she was using it as a diversion so the kid could grab the toy... Too sad.
TheRedditTeacher [OP] 7 points 2y ago
Sorry, I get it now 😅. Tired after a hard shift makes my reading worse.
alycrawford42- 6 points 2y ago
“So let me get this right; there’s nothing wrong with your drink? ... It’s the drink you ordered? ... You just want a new drink because I didn’t spell your name right? ... Okay give me just a minute.”

And I would just print her a new sticker 😂😂😂
TheRedditTeacher [OP] 1 points 2y ago
We still write on cups, so that wasn't an option unfortunately..
Koalastars009 4 points 2y ago
I’ve had that happen! I had a little boy pocket a handful of gift cards and run off. He did it so fast and casually like he’s done this before. I told the mom he just put a bunch of gift cards in his pocket. She got an attitude and said he wasn’t stealing. If that’s not stealing then I don’t know wtf you would call it because that isn’t borrowing. She yanked the gift cards out of his pockets and threw them angrily on the counter.
Sunflowertank 6 points 2y ago
Empty gift cards are kind of weird in a stealing situation. My aunt worked at Target, they used to have fun gift cards that were little games etc and she said it wasn’t stealing in targets book if someone took a blank empty gift card. People would take the fun ones sometimes.

That made my day :)

Using her kid to guilt trip is a low low move. I don’t have kids but if i was the parent I would want to be the one to explain it to my kid, not a barista forced to do their job
Js_On_My_Yeet 2 points 2y ago
Entitled 🤦🏻‍♂️ Big kudos for holding your ground 🤙🏼
TheRedditTeacher [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Thank you
Its_Lilly 1 points 2y ago
Look I have a 4 year old and a 19 month old. If one of them took something off the shelf and an employee came and asked me abt not paying I’d be so embarrassed. I’d either take the opportunity to teach my kid not to steal (as buying the bear would teach the kid how to manipulate into getting what they want) or if it wasn’t a good time, like if we were in a rush, I would just buy it. No chance in fucking hell I’d ever even think to say something as stupid as “I thought it was free.” Shes literally training in the next generation of Karen.
TheRedditTeacher [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Yes! Our fellow redditers named her: the Skaren (scamming Karen). Thank you for raising your children well!
LZARDKING 1 points 2y ago
Wow what a bitch, poor kid has a weird Karen for a mother.
