What is it like working for Starbucks and how do you remember all the drink recipes? (self.starbucksbaristas)

it’s hard — but only because of the learning curve. drink recipes all follow the same basic core recipe with minor variations depending on the drink. it really just takes practice to learn them all. it’s a job of muscle memory when it comes to actually making drinks. that being said, starbucks customers can be pretty overwhelming. between doing essentially whatever they want in their drinks and employees being pushed to always “make the moment right”, some customers become very entitled and hard to deal with. just remember to smile and nod and find the best solutions possible.

It is honestly really really hard. I messed up so many drinks for such a long time. The different amount of pumps and shots are so overwhelming and depend on each specific drink. And they are constantly changing recipes lol. Personally, I have a passion to make each recipe perfect and I study the recipe cards frequently, but it’s still fricken hard. I’ve been with Starbucks full time for 1.5 years and I still get confused at some of them😅

At starbucks we have whats called universality. Short thru venti. Nothing changes except shot prep (ristretto for flat white, or shots on top for macciatos) in 15 yrs the recipe for our drinks have only changed for flavor reinvention and that died and went away, and most recently they took vanilla out of hot chocolates. Seasonally we have drinks come and go but that's about it.

Over the summer they took away “extra hot” as the standard for sauces and “warm” for juice steaming. They also made it so blonde espresso now gets the same pumps as normal. And the green tea frap gets hot bar classic pumps 2/3/4 while strawberries and cream gets hot bar classic 1/2/2. And yeah, hot chocolates no longer get vanilla and they aren’t extra hot. Regular “cold foam” is now nonfat milk to 100mL and two pumps vanilla.

And just in general - cold brew gets cold bar pumps 3/4/6/7 and hot bar pumps 1/2/3/4. We don’t have a cold bar mocha pump so mocha fraps get 1/2/2. Teas with lemonade don’t get cut with water but teas with peach or guava and no lemonade get cut with water. Honey citrus mint gets honey blend 1/2/2 but almond milk honey flat white gets honey blend 3/4/5. Does a venti iced flat white get 3 shots or 4? I honestly forget.

I’m not saying I don’t know all this stuff, I’m just saying it’s fricken hard if you actually try

Nothing there is a true recipe change and letting that all boggle a new partners brain is just a method of inducing anxiety. The tea recipe is literally on the side of the shaker. And after all these years I will still walk over to the register and confirm a random recipe up because why not. No one is expected to know it all. Life is hard its how you approach and react that leads to success.

They what?? Did the mocha get sweeter? (I haven't been a partner since 2009. The changes that they've made to the processes from the time I started until now are mindblowing.)

They took vanilla out of the hot chocolate recipe! I’m not sure if they changed their mocha recipe or not. You may be tasting the sweeter side because the milk is no longer extra hot. Or maybe someones forgetting their pumps lol

Wouldn’t be so bad if the customers weren’t so terrible
