A tall rant (self.starbucksbaristas)

ugh idk. my SM texts me everyday asking if I can come in early/stay let (sometimes even asking if i can come in 2-3 hours early and stay 2 hours past my original leave time) and I understand we’re super understaffed atm but I’m in college. She knows this. And when i say i can’t come in at 9am instead of 1pm because i had to stay up all night doing homework because I stayed late the night before to help out she guilt trips me. Idk there’s literally so many people who work like one day a week, yet she harasses the same five people who all work 35+ hours a week but ignores the ones who work 15 hours and ask for more hours :/

you should direct her to those people.

ex. "hey, sorry I can't come in any earlier but I heard \_\_\_ was looking for some extra hours."

at least you get predictability right? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Or, you stop responding to her text messages. By Starbucks own standards, text messages are not an official means of communication. You’re under no obligation to reply to her.

i didn’t even realize i put ‘text’!! Sometimes she calls, but a lot of the time she’ll track me down at work and ask about changing my hours for the week

One thing that's helped me with managers like this is to flip the interaction. Pick a time when she's less busy and ask if you can talk. Then just calmly lay it out for her, like, "Hey, I just wanted to make sure we're clear on my availability. I can't work outside my scheduled hours."

It will suck and be uncomfortable but be firm and, if you need to, pushy - make sure she gets that if she calls you again, you're going to ask to talk with her again, and it will be uncomfortable again, and neither of you wants that. (You don't have to say that outright.)
