I hate capitalism lmao. someone at our store got covid and instead of shutting it down, they're just having all of the "non-exposed" partners pick up more hours. I signed up to do a part time job, I can't manage this. I'm working 44 hrs this week with only one day off. Between a global pandemic, holidays, and finals -- I'm exhausted. I'm going to get sick from the stress. I don't understand what is so essential about coffee and why -- after fucking everything essential workers have been through this year -- we don't get thanksgiving off. and for godsake, WHY is black friday still happening in this stupid fucking country !!!!!

my store is in the same spot. 11 partners are out bc one tested positive so there are 5 of us left working 8 hours a day 7 days a week while everyone else has a 2 week paid vacation. beyond frustrated dude. and all my manager cares abt is drive times and all the counts getting done 🙄
zombiecabbage [OP] 24 points 2y ago
Omg my manager started pressing me about drive time today and I was like .... r u fuckin serious ..... they’re gonna get their shit when they get it. SO WHAT drive time is at 1:30... THATS STILL QUICK
canidieyet_ 14 points 2y ago
11 partners ??! you guys should be CLOSED
alycrawford42- 13 points 2y ago
We stayed open with 7 partners the first time we had an exposure 🙃 we’re on our fourth exposure right now. Almost like we should just lock down the fucking city but our mayor will never do that
lowserotoninlevels 1 points 2y ago
Yep, we had two people get COVID, first time we had 9 people this time we have 7 working all day every day. It really sucks
DramaMamma25 21 points 2y ago
same thing happened at my store! 1 covid case and only the 4 ppl working with them on their most recent shift are gone. I’m usually a 15-20 hour employee bc this is my 2nd job and I have school but I’m working 38 next week... the week of Thanksgiving

my manager stopped doing isolations all together :/ he’s all like “did you find coverage? no? gotta come in sorry :/“
thrashnsass 10 points 2y ago
I’d report this to your local health department.

As has been said in many socialist circles regarding how capitalists REALLY view the “essential worker:”
The position is essential. You are not.
sandycat555 7 points 2y ago
This was one reason I left in September. I started working with the goal of 20 hours a week and at various times over my 14 month tenure, I was in danger of overtime because I kept covering shifts. I didn’t want to advance up the line despite that I had the experience and credentials to apply even for an ASM position, because what I saw was the higher you got, the coverage problems only got worse. Two months out, I’m now the GM for two other non-food-industry businesses and still have less hours and stress than I had as an entry level barista. But I did learn a -lot- about people management from working at SBUX that has been invaluable in my new roles, so I’m glad I stayed as long as I could.

Just curious, can you threaten to quit if your hours don't get reduced?
Our cafe is in a similar situation but we also reduced the hours we're open, so it's a little more manageable, but that's an SM/DM call.
zombiecabbage [OP] 8 points 2y ago
We did reduce the hours. We’re only doing 6am-4pm. I could definitely threaten to quit but I’m not even sure they would care. When the first major lockdown happened In march our store was the only store in the entire area that was required to stay open by command from the DM. We’re like the anchor for the area and I don’t understand ugh

Holy shit. Hell no. Our store is literally 16 people, and half are green beans. We would be destroyed if even ONE of us got sick. Thankfully none of us have so far, even though we’re down south in a hotspot. Wishing y’all the best and please stay safe. I definitely recommend getting medical masks, like KF94s/KN95s if you can get any. Check local Asian markets.

This is exactly why I left, they don’t give you shit at all really and it’s just a game of how much work can I make this employee do before they get mad that I wanna eat up all their time. My old SM harassed me into working on the day I moved to a new apartment and then when I realized how stupid that was he tried to make it an accountability issue that I didn’t show up, like damn it’s almost like I told you it would be really inconvenient for me to work this day, and then I ended up leaving because they lied that they would be flexible with me having 2 jobs and they kept threatening me with accountability when I needed more shifts off because of my other job. Long story short, Starbucks thinks their pu$$y is 30 times tighter than it actually is, that’s why workers and scandals always be falling out of it 🥴
sevunfootur 3 points 2y ago
This happened at my store literally tonight at like 9pm. My manager called ans said that a partner who was asymptotic tested positive and because I worked with them today (my SM can’t tell me who it was), I have to be out for two weeks. I’m very worried I won’t have a job to come back to.

If they fire you because they think you might have covid, iirc that’s a labor lawsuit right there honey bunny <3

My store reduced hours of operation to compensate for lack of staff. I was shocked. Usually they just make us suffer.

Genuinely curious how this relates to capitalism.

Would your situation be better if you lived in Russia? Not hating just wondering.

Curious to know what would happen if the remaining staff at the store refused to work, or at the very least called out sick all on the same day or something. It would theoretically be a lot easier to get 10 partners on board with a small strike like this than the whole store and could be a good start to organizing the entirety of the staff. Have you and the remaining team considered taking about this ?
