How YOU can help your local starbucks (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by FloydnFin8
Let’s make a list of things customers could start doing to make our lives easier !

1. Start with the size

2. Take a breath while ordering.

3. STOP WHISPER ORDERING FROM THE PASSENGER SEAT! WE CANT HEAR YOU!

4. Please do not order pour overs through the drive-thru

5. Stop ordering at the window. Especially complex Frappuccinos

6. Please pause your phone call or music while you order

7. Please pay attention while you order. That text message can wait

8. Don’t shout your order at the screen and pull past

9. STOP AND TELL US YOU HAVE A MOBILE ORDER ! Don’t drive past 🙃

10. STOP MOBILE ORDERING WHILE YOURE IN LINE! LIKE JFC IT DOESN’T GET DONE FASTER AT ALL! WHY CANT YOU JUST TELL ME YOUR ORDER! IT JUST MAKES MY LIFE DIFFICULT BECAUSE NOW WE HAVE TO PULL THROUGH THE MOBILE ORDER TICKETS TO GET TO YOUR DRINK. ALSO YOU CANT GRT ANGRY AT US THAT YOU DECIDED TO BE AN IDIOT .

Thank you 😊

Don’t rattle off a complex, multistep order and expect us to get all of it the first time. Take a breath, calm down, and talk in a conversational tone. That will actually be more likely to get you through faster than if we have to ask you to repeat your order 3-4 times.

Don't speak into your crotch when you order.

Don't get angry with us when we ask if you want anything more than that one grande pike.

If you're a passenger, either move closer to the box and speak up or tell your driver what to order.

Stop ordering Medicine Balls.

Don't get angry with us and SCREAM your order, expecting us to get your 87 step order correct.

Listen to us when you pull up to the drive. If we need a second, don't just start spitting your order out because hey, we're fucking busy and need a second to actually pay attention to you.

All of this, yes. That last one guts me. Legit don't think customers understand that the person taking orders has other roles in the store.
Pies-in-the-Skies 9 points 2y ago
Also, don’t get annoyed if I read back your order. I’m trying to make sure that you get what you want. Sometimes it seems like getting the order right is more important to me than to the customer.
ladytaters 6 points 2y ago
They (used to) train us to read the order back to confirm things are correct. You're doing the right thing.

I’ll read it back if it’s crazy long and they still come up to the window and say that I missed something

me: one venti HOT white mocha?

customer: yes just one venti white mocha, hot. that’s all thanks

*at the window

me, about to hand customer their drink:

customer, grabs hot drink and even takes a drink: um this was supposed to be a grande iced white mocha.

My favorite is when you ask them to check that everything is correct on the screen. “Yes it is.”

Then they get up to the window. “That’s not what I ordered.”

Its a good day if any customer follows any one of the guidelines you wrote

Also stop screaming “HELLO??? IS ANYONE GOING TO TAKE MY ORDER??? KNOCK KNOCK IS ANYONE HOME? HELLLOOOOOOOO?” — especially if you’re going to say “sorry i need a minute to look” or ignore us when your (very annoyed) barista answers. It’s fucking rude and there are nicer ways of getting our attention. People often start doing this before my headset can even beep, and it’s always so frustrating because these customers are almost always the difficult ones too.

At my store our night crew normally let’s those people wait a minute or two so we don’t answer so annoyed and because well it’s deserved

More than just pause the music while ordering. After you order we still hear you so please keep your music off until you are past the menu.
DefinitelyNotALion 1 points 2y ago
Also don't blast it when you pull up to the window. Even if we're not directly talking to you. Especially if we are directly talking to you.

Last week our first drive thru customer of the day pulls up, I turn my headset on and say my greeting. No answer so I wait a moment and say it again. Still nothing. Then this extremely bad music starts blasting from the car. Long story short she didn't get anything from us that day.

For the love.... please unplug your phone from the charger. Especially when you see me hanging from the hand off by my tootsies!

To be fair, I sometimes find ordering at the speaker to be anxiety inducing. Mobile ordering helps me a lot, especially at starbucks, because I find ordering there especially intimidating. I usually do it in the parking lot before getting in line but I can see how someone might do it while waiting in the car line. All of the other tips are perfect though!
FloydnFin8 [OP] 6 points 2y ago
That’s perfectly fine. Im a barista and still get anxious ordering certain things so I’ll mobile order when I have stars. But most of the time when we get a mobile order we’re expecting that it should take some time before the person will arrive. As well as we tend to prioritize our drive-through drinks. I just suggest if you’re going to mobile order or a little bit earlier than usual or mobile order it and just pick up inside. This is pretty easy because then you can sit in your car until you think it’s ready and then walk in and walk out as well as you then don’t have to sit through a long line

It's good to know how it works from an inside perspective. I'm not a barista, I just fell down this reddit rabbit hole lol. Typically, I'll just pull up the drink I want on the app so I have it in front of me and just order at the speaker. I'll remember this advice for the next time I mobile order though. I definitely try to make things as easy as possible for any food service/retail employee. Especially you guys! It just seems so hectic there and I feel like you have the overwhelming majority of entitled and inpatient customers.

Why would anyone mobile order then go thru the drive thru? I don't get it.
Mrtobecontinued 1 points 2y ago
One of my local shops can often be backed up into the street and the parking lot stinks. I place a mobile order, park in the adjacent lot and run in to grab my order. Sometimes the planets align and there is no line, so I just hit the drive thru to grab my mobile order.
FloydnFin8 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I know this is a very late post but tbh if I get a mobile order and it was placed less than a minute ago, I let it wait. Mobile orders are supposed to have time to be made.
