2% milk (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by zombiecabbage
I hand this customer his mobile order and he says, “I only wanted 2% milk.”

I say yeah, this is 2% milk.

He replies “It’s too milky. I only wanted like *pinch* this much milk.”

Then it hits me..... 2% milk..... as in volume. He wanted 2% of milk in the cup.

The stupidity astounds me.

Meanwhile , as an european barista I have no idea what 2%milk means and would probably do it in volume 😂
cadmus1890 34 points 2y ago
Full fat milk is usually around 3.8%, so 2% milk means half the fat had been removed
sunnyismybunny 48 points 2y ago
I never knew that about whole milk having about 3.8% milk so thank you for that.

Although now I fear the inevitable:

CAN I GET A GRAND ICED CARAMEL MACCHIATO WITH 2.9% MILK?

I’m sorry, miss, we have only nonfat, 2%, or whole milk.

OMG I GET THIS ALL THE TIME NO PROBLEM AT MY STARBUCKS. IT’S HALF WHOLE MILK AND HALF 2%. DON’T YOU KNOW THE FAT PERCENTAGES OF ALL THE MILKS?

Sorry no problem half whole milk and half 2%. Anything else for you today?

YEA I WANT A VENTI ICED SKINNY VANILLA LATTE SUB WHITE MOCHA AND I WANT THAT WITH 3.2% MILK WITH A SPLASH OF HEAVY CREAM WITH SOY MILK DARK COCOA FOAM 4/5 DECAF EXTRA HOT STEAMED MILK FOAM AND WHIP CREAM AND VANILLA SWEET CREAM COLD FOAM WITH EXTRA CARAMEL DRIZZLE MOCHA COOKIE CRUMBLES ON BOTTOM AND TOP AND PUMPKIN CREAM COLD FOAM IN THE EXACT MIDDLE OF THE CUP IN A TRENTA CUP WITH EXTRA ICE

*10 mins later and half the drink gone* this drink wasn’t made right it taste too much like foam, there is no milk.
SmokeyGreenEyes 2 points 2y ago
Do people really order like that last paragraph??? Or is that all just an urban legend about white girls with blond hair and UGGs during the summer time.
smilygirrl12 3 points 2y ago
It's a bit exaggerated but honestly not far off. We have a couple customers who are quite specific like that.
soraah97 4 points 2y ago
Oh thats what it means! Thank you! We just call it whole fat milk / half fat / skinny milk . Ive never heard of the % before!
Silly_Goose2 4 points 2y ago
If you called it half fat here in North America you might get half & half (10% Cream) but whole and skinny (or nonfat) are used here too. I don't think the Americans do this but in Canada we also call our whole milk Homo, short for homogenized.
SmokeyGreenEyes 7 points 2y ago
Oh God, heaven forbid you call milk "homo" in the United States. Twitter would be a-blazing!

#😂
RekoJeeves 3 points 2y ago
Isn’t all milk homogenized thou?
RekoJeeves 2 points 2y ago
In the US, whole milk, reduced fat, and non-fat/skim milk are used in place of percentages. 2% just isn’t called ‘reduced fat’ frequently because there’s also a more watery 1% (less common, a halfway point between 2% and skim).

Half & half is considered to be half whole milk and half “cream” (probably light cream), so I personally wouldn’t think of half fat milk as half & half, idk about other North American peeps (also because all milk has more lactose-milk sugar-than creams, including half & half, which is why heavy cream is a passable keto creamer but whole milk isn’t.)

We have dairy choices, whole, nonfat, reduced fat(2%)..... besides heavy whip and breve
perfecktenschlog 24 points 2y ago
i- i would NEVER have thought of that... it’s ok i had a guy order a pour over of the same coffee we were already brewing 🤦🏼‍♀️
1b1rd 11 points 2y ago
We have a regular that does this. He likes it pour-over. But he doesn't treat it like it's an abnormal request so everyone has to get weird looks from him while they ask if they misheard.
Snugglypuss 8 points 2y ago
Its not abnormal.

Particular sure. Pour overs are better. And anything to make our coffee better why the heck not.
1b1rd 1 points 2y ago
I meant that, upon double checking, or pointing out we have it drip, we get the "Are you f***ing stupid?" look
Snugglypuss 1 points 2y ago
Well they didn't ask for drip.. they ask for PO.

When some one asks for almond milk. I don't tell them I already poured regular milk..
aimsthename88 -2 points 2y ago
It may be better, no question about that.. but it absolutely is abnormal to request a pour-over of the same coffee we just brewed.
Snugglypuss 11 points 2y ago
Nah man agreed to disagree.
RekoJeeves 1 points 2y ago
I would say it’s more inconsiderate of baristas and other customers (and expensive) than abnormal. We don’t brew decaf drip, so people who absolutely don’t want americanos will order decaf drip. That is somewhat more justifiable than ordering a pour over of an already brewed coffee.
deevandiacle 1 points 2y ago
What's wrong with that?
perfecktenschlog 2 points 2y ago
bc why would you make us go through the process of doing a pour over when we already have it brewed? if you want pour overs bc they taste good, then do them at home. plus he got mad at us for it taking too long when we warned him we were busy and they already take longer to do
PM-ME-BAKED-GOODS 22 points 2y ago
How does someone like this make it through life?
Simplyroro 20 points 2y ago
I wish we could tell customers, trying to be fancy leads to baristas looking at your dumb ass like well you're a dumb ass....

bryceofswadia 5 points 2y ago
if he only wanted 2% milk... what did he want the rest of the cup to be? if milk is the only thing in the cup, even a pinch of milk still makes the drink 100% milk...
thrashnsass 5 points 2y ago
Likely brewed coffee. And only wanted a tiny splash of milk instead of our usual amount for "with 2%".
zombiecabbage [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Of course we remade it and then he complained there wasn’t enough milk. So I was like .... here, milk in a short cup, pour it yourself.

Then, ofc, he pours the same amount of milk that we initially served him .... 🙄
thrashnsass 1 points 2y ago
Ugh, of course.
bryceofswadia 2 points 2y ago
I really underestimate how stupid people are.
ChemicalBarnacle 3 points 2y ago
We don’t get paid enough for this shit.
He11oboyo 2 points 2y ago
Reminds me of how people ask for an inch of milk.
ih8yogurt 2 points 2y ago
That’s why with brewed coffee and iced coffee and cold brews, when possible, I pour the milk in front of the customer and say “tell me when to stop”
obeehunter 0 points 2y ago
Well to be fair he wasn't stupid - he just didn't communicate what he wanted properly and really chose the wrong way to word it considering 2% milk is the default milk for most drinks.

This kind of reminds me of when I went to a health supplement store. This was at the very start of the pandemic and they had blocked off everything inside except access to cash. I had to verbally direct the clerk to get the protein bars I wanted. There was a solid minute of confusion when he kept looking at the higher and higher shelves for my 'Peanut Butter UP' bar. "No . .. the bar is called UP. It's right in front of you." We both had a good laugh.
