When the morning crew gets free smoothies for all their hard work (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by lemonjuicepulp
And night crew gets :) nothing

Even though we have to clean up every mess morning crew makes and end up staying 30 minutes ( sometimes an hour ) to get everything done every night :))))))))))) sorry just venting feel free to ignore

No nights are definitely harder. Morning shifts are hard work without a doubt, but you don't face the same consequences as you do at nights. In the morning you can just clock out when it's your time to leave. If you pull that shit at closing you get yelled at for missing everything

And then you get yelled at for staying later to make sure everything is done.

Sorry I’ve worked both and I’m worked to the bone in the mornings sometimes left to solo bar all morning and do ice bins, drains and floors all while close comes in and complains we didn’t set them up.
treebloom 1 points 2y ago
Yeah I've been in that same situation when people no-show and stuff. It's definitely rough, especially when no one else is willing to do floors and when they're forced they just do a piss poor job. Luckily night crews tend to be more chill than mornings as a generality so my store faces very little of that evening crew pettiness. Usually is the morning folks complaining about how nothing was done overnight.

I really wonder how much stuff would change if Starbucks would just do a little restructuring. Like honestly, just having a dedicated dishwasher/customer support employee for larger/busier stores - someone who almost never flexes into other positions, solely focuses on CS roles - should be enough to take a bit of pressure off mid and night crews so that open is almost always flawless.

Every store I worked at, it seemed like dishes were the biggest inconvenience because you aren't allowed to be BOH. Take dishes out of the equation, and suddenly there's more time for prep for each daypart handoff. And dishes were always what seemed to spur most of the handoff-related arguments at my stores - night crew didn't clean the sauce bins, mid never cycled out inclusions, morning crew never dumped blonde for turnover, etc etc.

My first (and favourite) store learned how to work smoothly and efficiently after a couple small meetings held between the SSVs in the store (then each SSV would meet up with their daypart team). It took a couple months (like, 3-4 months lmao) but eventually the only time there would be a really bad close was if we got hit hard at night. And even then... no daypart turnover happens without cutting some corners. Just gotta know which ones can afford to be cut

Yeah that would be the more efficient route. I also think having separate personnel to come deep clean the store for clean play would be good too, because no one is able to do an effective clean play after just working a 7-8 hour shift. While we’re at it, there should be a service for all metal store pieces to be absolutely singed in boiling water during the night so that it’s truly actually clean. I know there’s a hobar but our store doesn’t have the space to utilize it properly

Closing crew here also. I think it should be standard that when the mornings replacements clock in, morning crew can step off bar and restock and clean everything so their replacement is set up for success. If I come in, hop on bar during a rush, and open up my fridge to find only nonfat milk, ima be pissed because there’s 100% no reason for that. Make sure you’re actually good to go before you leave

Do u get date out food if you close? At my store morning crew gets nothing rlly. But idc bc I work both
lemonjuicepulp [OP] 4 points 2y ago
I could see why morning wouldn’t get any since any food that would be expired is thrown away the night before. But yeah, we do occasionally get to grab foods that are expiring that same night so I suppose that’s a bonus for not getting smoothies.

I don’t wanna shame morning people though. They definitely bust their asses hard and most of the time hate that they can’t get things done. It’s usually not their fault or because of laziness ( at least in my store’s case)

Opener here, appreciate you saying that. We have half an hour max to do everything. After that it's a permanent rush. Drinks are back to back and mobile orders and walk-ins are nonstop for at least five hours. Everyone wants their coffee before work or after their night shift.

We open with two people. One on window/bar, the other on backups/bar/warming/stocking/everything else. This goes on for two hours.

The social struggle is real. Every customer is already mildly upset because it's dark and cold and they have to go to work or are coming off shift. 4 AM is not my personal shining social hour either.

Everyone who comes on shift, all throughout the day, is upset that more didn't get done before they arrived. Everyone currently on shift is wishing they had about eight more arms and five less caramel fraps with sweet cream cold foam and extra mocha drizzle made with 1% milk and three shots but actually it's not sweet enough so let's remake it but I'm on my way to work so I'll just come back tomorrow morning and you can make it for me then, [First Name Aggressively Stated].

We aren't lazy. The store is just actively burning down around us from the minute we arrive. It's not the closers' fault. Every day part blames the day part that came before them, which for openers is closers. But the problems are due to tight scheduling, skeletal staffing, and constant stupid corporate promotions. There's nothing any day part can do about that.
lemonjuicepulp [OP] 6 points 2y ago
Everything especially that last part is absolutely true. It’s not the openers fault they got rewarded with smoothies, the people that got them those rewards never come in after 12 to reward closers. It’s problems that are above our head
JMarBrwn 6 points 2y ago
Ah, yes. The classic opener vs. closer feud. As an 8 year partner who’s worked both opens and closes, I can tell you there isn’t a day part that is harder than the other. They both face their own challenges during a shift, and if you have a good team this issue is non-existent. I’m fortunate enough to work at a smaller lobby store now, and we never have this problem. Sounds like it’s a somewhat toxic work environment paired with a shift team that focuses on the wrong things. This happens at dt stores and understaffed stores a lot unfortunately, and unless your manager and shift team are solid it’s inevitable. The shifts need to think less about “oh great what do I have to clean up from the morning shift” and more about “how can I get this shift running as smoothly as possible”

There’s a difference between a slip-up/weird day, and consistently missing stuff. I’ve been slinging beans long enough to realize that shit happens, A LOT. Just have to focus on the opportunities to improve, and forget the bad opens/closes. Idk maybe I just don’t care enough anymore lol
lemonjuicepulp [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I wouldn’t say it’s toxic here. We don’t really complain about our morning people, mostly about how our manager decides to staff mornings vs closing . Generally when he’s there, nothing in the morning gets gone. I’m mainly just frustrated with how closers never really get recognition for what we do, which isn’t openers fault.
Js_On_My_Yeet 2 points 2y ago
I feel like majority of partner redditors are part of the night crew (including myself) 😅
lemonjuicepulp [OP] 2 points 2y ago
I will say I spent my main portion working mornings, and have only recently been part of night crew exclusively ( starting a few months ago, so I think I spent 6 months morning and have been night since those 6 months due to block scheduling ) so I at least have an equal viewpoint from both sides. But with mornings it’s a lot easier to go home and forget, where as nights you go home and sleep , I graining the frustration and tiredness
csaine 2 points 2y ago
I fail to see why one shift is rewarded and the other is not, I only ever work nights and it is hard. I'm sure days are hard too. I just don't understand giving rewards to some and not all.
