Are we allowed to wear N-95 respirators to work? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by PenPar
I remember medical masks were disallowed months ago. But I’m wondering if this has changed over the months?

Long story short the morning crew all quarantined for a week after someone showed symptoms; they all just came back. I’m far less worried about catching it from a partner than I am catching it from our customers now that Thanksgiving is behind us.

my store has never said anything about what masks can and cannot be worn tbh. i wore a white N95 mask to work the other day, sometimes i wear a disposable/surgical one or sometimes a cloth one. idk tho

I’m glad you get to wear it at your store! Yeah, on /r/Starbucks I was advised to wear it and see if anyone cares. I’m just overthinking, I reckon.

Medical grade masks were never disallowed. They didn’t want you wearing N-95 masks because the idea was they should go to medical personnel over regular citizens. But if you had one, you could wear one. There were never any corporate policies that said N-95 masks were not allowed.

Following that, you are still allowed to wear N-95s. The only masks that should not be allowed are facial gaiters or masks with vents following CDC guidelines.

Oh, wow, I must have completely misremembered our policies then. I thought we were outright banned from wearing them to work. This makes me feel much better, thank you!

The problem is if they have one of those air valves on them, they let your improperly filtered breath out. I don’t think your manager would stop you from wearing one with the circular air valve but I would recommend against doing it in case you get covid and end up spreading it because of your mask’s design. N-95 is fine just make sure it doesn’t have the valve on it.

I believe that gaiters are the only ones that have been banned because they are too thin.... but our black ones they give us are just fine....

Wear em if you got em

It can't have the valve on it because then your unfiltered breath can escape.

My manager does not allow N95s.
