Help? My store is switching to block scheduling!(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by jawhurty
Hi! I know a lot of y’all have stores that have gone to block scheduling and I was wondering what to expect? Our store is dt/cafe and is one of the busiest in our district. We have maybe 35 employees, and it’s very wild.
Through all of this, we’ve never done block scheduling. What has been your experience with it?

Your schedule will be very consistent either morning or night shift. You may not get your shift covered by partners outside your block. My store did the block scheduling for weeks but when partners got sick or were exposed upper management never stuck to the guidelines. Hopefully yours will do better.

I hope so. My manager is very good about stuff like that typically

It seems to be a little different everywhere. My store has been on block scheduling since September and before that we were on it in May and June. There are only 4 blocks: opening and closing blocks working 4 days a week, and opening and closing the other 3 days. Of course the partners working in the 3 day block get fewer hours - at most 20 hours a week, the bare minimum for keeping benefits. Everyone's assigned to one block and \~officially\~ you cannot work outside your block. At first it was a very firm rule but now not so much - we frequently have shifts covered between blocks and even have partners covering shifts at other stores, which seems to defeat the point (and of course the SM was working in all blocks to begin with). So it doesn't seem to *actually* do anything to lower covid transmission risk, it just gives Starbucks a reason to keep more partners working if someone gets infected. But what else is new?

The changeover during peak is ROUGH. We found it best to just let the times suffer a bit, and clean up the morning scene, and THEN really get going

any chance you could explain what block scheduling is vs other types?

Block: you only work open, mid, or night. There are no overlaps, and you only work with the same group of people.
Regular is just any shift with any coworker.
Its in case someone tests positive, so they won't have to close the store, just adjust hours
