Spying on coworkers (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by StarbucksIsScary
Has anybody ever been asked to keep tabs on another partner and report on them to corporate? I have a friend who swears that there is a group of coworkers at her cafe that are trying to bait her into breaking policy or something just to snitch on her. It seemed like all the 'mystery' shoppers came through the window when she was there working it. There was a load of other stuff but she swears up and down that it felt like they were all being instructed to mess with her.

Definitely not another baristas business nor their place to be involved with any misconducts.

SSVs could be all made aware of a continuous issue and pay extra attention to it, but that doesn’t sound like what you’re describing.

No, and you're right. There's a lot more happening at this cafe than just coworkers picking on her. It honestly seemed like they were being incentivized to mess with her, by someone higher up than the DM.

I think corporate viewed her as Problem Employee because of reasons like educating other partners about employment protection laws, and talking about unions or unionizing, but they couldn't fire her without cause. So I think they were trying to engineer it.

Genuinely asking, does your friend have a history of mental illness? Conspiracy theories like this are a symptom of schizophrenia

No, she does not. I can't go into any details about it but there's FAR more going on here than just coworkers picking on her and making her feel uncomfortable. I am pretty sure Starbucks was targeting her in a union-busting effort. She was a thorn in their side but couldn't fire her without justification.

Oh they’re organizing a union? Then never mind they’re definitely not crazy. Best of luck to them.

Idk if this counts but my sm would constantly tell us like oh if you see someone doing something wrong tell me immediately and I’ll buy u lunch or some shit like that. It was pretty fucked up honestly. There was always some drama going on because of that. So many snitches smh

Never heard of anything like this. As a shift whose had baristas steal, I've always been sus of people and just keep an eye on baristas who've had problems in the past, but "always assume the best in every situation" is the starbucks standard. Trying to get someone in trouble sounds like bad management or someone doesn't like your friend. If i were them I'd sit down and talk to the dm or at least email them and say something.

I've said this in some other comments just now, but there was a lot more going on here than just coworkers picking on her.
