Thinking of applying... good idea or no? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by hmrw5807
Hey friends!

I am a long time Starbucks customer, thinking of applying (even after reading all of your crazy stories and posts).

I work for the state (MA), but I am barely making ends meet, and my current part time job on the weekends will end on Dec. 31st. I really can’t go without earning that extra money.

I am a quick learner and move quickly, but definitely would be nervous to jump into it and hopefully not fail.

Just wondering what you all would have for thoughts or advice?

You should 100% apply. Obviously it’s a lot of info to take in at once but at least in my experience they give you ample training before getting you out there. Once you get the hang of it it’s a fun job. You can also take advantage of great benefits for a part time job such as health coverage if you are able to work 20 hours/ week.

It's probably going to be ever so slightly over minimum wage, whatever that is where you are. Min wage here is $7.25 and I'm making $9.50, for example.

Normally I’d say apply, but after today no. Most people I work with are super nice and I like to pretend that they are all nice and helpful. That’s just not true. I’m still new but today was the first time I’ve wanted to quit. The problem when you are new is it’s simply a lot of information to intake and memorize all at once. It’s not possible to know instantly. Most of my coworkers are helpful when I have questions. Some get agitated you asked.

The benefits are awesome but be prepared for the job to suck the life out of you

Great job for extra money and benefits; I knew a lot of people in LA when I worked at SBUX there that had this as a hustle for the health benefits and worked a different job for their main income. Two things I would recommend: a) if you have the liberty to choose where to apply to, go to the store and see the atmosphere behind bar. Is everyone chill and laughing? Is it really hectic? This will tell you a lot about which store to apply to. Once again, that’s if they give you the option rather than just putting you at whatever store needs the most help.
B) be upfront about what hours you’d like to work once you’re onboard. If you really don’t have the time (aka you have an extra job) don’t work more than 20 hours/week. Managers will try to get you to work more than you’re scheduled if they’re desperate but if you are very open about what your set hours are, they won’t budge that. Good luck

I wish I had paid more attention to the atmosphere when applying to my store. I choose to apply to the busiest store in our district and it has a DT. Being new I was quickly overwhelmed and hated the job. I’ve gotten better but I still can’t find myself getting used to the chaotic workplace.
