I'm stuck as customer support and now I feel like a janitor, not a barista. (self.starbucksbaristas)

I am night crew, so part of my CS cycle incorporates getting closing tasks done. Apparently I support so well that for the past few months now 95% (at least) of the time I work I'm put on customer support. I feel like im starting to forget how to make drinks, forget where buttons are on the registers, and miss out on talking to people including regulars and so am forgetting who they are and what their drinks are. For a while now I've been considering becoming a shift because our night crew only has 2 and so we need someone for flexibility, now I'm considering it just so that eventually I'll be able to assign myself a position that isn't customer support.

Where my permanent CS people, who are stuck doing CS because if someone else does it then you'll never leave on time?

At my store (at least opens/ mids), the ssv tends to be the main cs person. That way they can shift to where the greatest need is. But I do get what you're saying. It's hard feeling like you're the only one doing menial tasks. I love bar and a.m. cs and taking to my regulars, and would hate if those aspects were taken away.

This was so me 6 months ago or so. CS Every. Shift. It finally took me blowing up (I don't recommend this lol) and asking why. That's when the shifts would communicate to me that they couldn't trust anyone else with it. I let them know that this would have to change and they need to start training other strong CS partners. Now I mostly bar and I go to CS occasionally when needed. I don't mind CS, but I got so freaking sick of it every shift, I avoid it like the plague haha

The sad part is i was never very fast at bar, and because my store is right in front of a school we have a huge afternoon peak, so at this point i might just die on bar now.

Maybe you can ask for more time on bar when it's slower so you can build your speed? Or maybe ask for some drive thru time. I think it's your best bet to be a little more vocal with your shifts about rotating more. Good luck!

I’ve been solely closing as a CS for over a year now. It’s grueling work, but also explained as not being able to “trust” other baristas. It’s flattering to know that you get the job done right and quickly, but it’s really exhausting to come in and do it every day. I completely understand and I’m glad that they are making a change/attempting to do you aren’t stuck being CS every night

I personally think that telling us that they don't trust anyone else is a case of "smoking mirrors". I've been doing it now for a while, I'm sick of it and for the lousy amount of pay, it's totally not worth it...

Idk I enjoy not being customer facing

As a SSV I’d love for someone if they ever feel like I’m doing this to them to come to me and say “hey I’d love to get better on bar when we’re slower could I get some bar time?” And things like that. Take the initiative to let them know. They may be under the illusion that you truly enjoy that position because you are so good at it. It sucks but SSV are just people too.

Just ask if u want to be on a difrent position, thats what I do

Ironically enough, all the shifts tell me I’m great on CS but its definitely not my favorite position for closing. Opening/ mid cs isn’t so bad though

I feel you! I’ve been putting on CS for closing shift every shift now, it’s burning out 😅tried to ask why but came up w a reason that you’re not fast enough for bar or you don’t know how to clean bar 🥺
I just miss making drinks and my customers! It’s just hard some days clocking in knowing that you just have to clean whole ass shift

Me.. 🖐🏻
I was w the company for a year and a half as a shift, took a break in july and got rehired as a barista at a new store because I moved.
And at the new store for some reason I was put on CS all the time for the most part like you and I became a shift again about a month and a half into my rehire because I hated the fact that I'd be put on CS all the time.
So i suggest you become a shift too because ur life's gonna b a lot easier lol

That's exactly what I said. I've been there for two months. I'm so pissed because I do the cleaning chores, toilets, mop, sweep, dishes, etc. I'm told to "hurry up".....The other Barista's that have been there longer have the better schedules, they cut up, go on there phones constantly and have a great time. I came into work yesterday and one of the Barista's at bar said, "have fun closing". This isn't funny to me. Time to start looking for another job.

Bruh we never assign anyone on CS...the people on bar just tell whoever isn’t doing anything to restock stuff and whatever
Edit: I actually didn’t know it’s its own thing

That’s me rn on opens. On the DCR it might have something else listed but I always end up on it. It’s nice and annoying.

When I work evenings which is only 2 nights a week I only do CS. It’s been a few months now and I love it. I am able to get all of the closing tasks done quite quickly and then able to keep the store tighty until close. After all that I am able to float around wherever we need a little bit of help

in our store we are told that the ssv needs to be cs, i miss being a barista so i can be put on the bar and window and just need to worry about one thing
