How to deal with anti-maskers?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by CatVietnamFlashBack
Had a couple walk in with their masks only hanging from their ears. They kept moving it around but wouldn't keep in over their face. I was at register and politely asked the woman if she could put her mask back on, but she just said, "No," and rolled her eyes. I repeated myself and insisted, saying it was a requirement to be in the store. She again refused and said, "You're harassing me." I was livid, but I still took her order.
I guess sometimes I have a hard time standing up for myself. Don't I have the right to insist they wear it so I can feel safe? Do I have the right to ask them to leave or go through drive thru if they can't follow our store policies? I get hella anxious when I have to deal with crazy people. Any advice on how to handle this the next time?

You have the right to refuse them service and ask them to leave the store

The new third place policy includes a clause that states you can deny service for refusing to comply with local health mandates.
It also mentions consumers being accountable for their own behavior. So if they make a scene, you can double-down on policy.
It’s not harassment. Starbucks is a private business and not a government or educational institution. Starbucks already offers reasonable accommodations via drive thru and mobile ordering.
They are not applying for a home loan or government grant. They are buying coffee.

I'll have to look this up and print it so next time I'll have proof. I'm not a shift, and not all of my shifts have a stand-up attitude about non-compliance. So at times, like today, I have to really make my stance clear. Next time I'll stand my ground.

You can also file an "Ethics and compliance" complaint about it if the SM/DM/RM refuse to let you do this.
There's a dedicated section of the partner portal with a hotline to call to open a report.

If they have a medical condition and can’t wear the mask, cool, order and go wait in your car and I’ll bring it to you. But if you are just blatantly being a jerk, SERVICE DENIED. You have to deny them service for not complying with the store’s policies. If they make a scene, just call the cops and fill out an incident report. This nonsense cannot continue. People think that they can act however they want in Starbucks because we have cowered to them for so long. No more.

Yeah because an employee doing their job by asking the customer to wear a mask is harassment. 🙄In my opinion she’s harassing you but not wearing the mask. I just don’t understand why people won’t wear them. I’m a customer. I don’t go in the store. I use the drive through but I wear a mask every time.

anyone not wearing a mask is greeted by:
"Please put your mask on properly"
if the customer either refuses or ignores me I'll repeat it but say "You will not be helped until you wear your mask properly in the store. You may order using the app and wait outside if you still refuse." and I walk away until the customer either leaves or puts their mask on properly. I have yet to have anyone make a scene.

I usually tell them I could just call the police. Ain't nobody got time for that.
