Okay. So here’s the current tea that I would love to share with corporate on why stores get shut down and baristas come in sick ALL THE TIME! So yesterday morning before I had to go to work I took my temperature, I had been having a really bad cough and I’m quite certain the thermometer we have at work is broken. I also run low and I was at 99.1° so I decided to use sick pay. (One of our partners is pregnant and I knew she worked that day. My manager was pretty pissy about it and asked me first thing “who’s covering for your shift?” I asked all THREE of the other people on night crew who weren’t already working if they could cover no one could. So I let her know and heard nothing back the rest of the day. I then called back this morning to tell them obviously I wasn’t coming back in because I still wasn’t fever free and again my manager insists I find coverage and then proceeds to tell me on day TWO that they have changed sick pay and now before I can return I have to provide the store a doctors note! So she wasn’t going to tell me this until I had come in today if I decided I didn’t care about my health and the safety of others and came into work to make less hassle for her.

Call PCC! That’s not correct if you are sick the manager is responsible for finding coverage, if you called out because your car wouldn’t start or some other reason yes it’s on you, but not if you’re sick!

As far as I know, you can use your sick pay if you call out sick... I also use it if I have to take an extra day off work for a doctor's appointment. And the manager is responsible for finding coverage, not you.

If you call out and are using protected sick time, it is your manager’s responsibility to find coverage. However, the policy does state:

> Starbucks may request verification or certification as permitted by federal, state or local law.

So, technically, if you can’t provide a note, you can’t use sick time, so you would be considered responsible for your shift, I guess? But because of COVID, I would definitely call PRC and talk to them about your manager’s expectation for you to get a doctor’s note for a potential 24 hour bug during a global health pandemic.

It depends on what state you are in.I am a former SM and in California they can not require you to bring a doctors note to use sick pay.Look up your state law and call them out if they are wrong
