Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

dear old lady who ruined my day, i hope you’re happy with yourself (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by canidieyet_
My store doesn’t accepts bills bigger than $20, so that means no 50’s or 100’s. I assume all stores do this but I could be wrong. There’s this older lady who comes through every. single. day. and tries to pay with either a 50 or a 100 dollar bill — sometimes multiple times a day. We always tell her that we don’t accept them (we have exceptions in certain situations, like if someone’s order is ~$40 or more we’ll accept them) and she gets really fucking pissed and cussed at us, then hands us almost enough to cover the total, but a few dollars left. For example, her total today was $27 and some change. She tried paying with a 50 but my SS said I couldn’t take it, so she hands me $19 and says “well since you guys wanna be asses abt it that’s all i have because apparently you don’t take 50s now, even though i pay with a 50 all the time here.”

I’ve been working here since august, and there’s been MAYBE two times i’ve accepted a 50, and even then my SM didn’t want to. She literally does this every day and sometimes if someone comes through and doesn’t have enough or genuinely doesn’t know that we don’t accept large bills, i’ll be lenient and help them cover what they can. But the fact this lady told me I should “be fucking ashamed of myself” because I wouldn’t let her have the things she couldn’t pay for for free just upsets me.

(and thing is, usually she’ll give up and grumpily pay with card — which she also pretends to not know how to swipe it) It was honestly such a shit show.

Have been slinging lattes for almost four years and this happens a lot. We have two banks and a Walgreens across the street where they can break change but no, please give me a $100 for a Grande Pike Roast. It's always fun when they ask you to grab the person in charge and you are the shift supervisor.

My shift would walk in the back, and then walk back out and loudly announce she was in charge.

Shout out to Joely wherever you are now.

I always do the, “Okay, but I’m going to have to give your change in rolls of coins,” and they usually magically find a $20.

"$19? Sure, no problem! Which items would you like me to take off your order?"

This is the way

You’ve explained the policy to her. There’s no reason she should keep trying this shit.

But am I the only one who thinks it’s weird that your SM won’t let her pay for a $27 ticket with a 50? That seems perfectly reasonable to me. Our store takes 50s all the time, and 100s occasionally. 🤷🏻‍♀️

we don’t accept 50s or 100s at all. if someone’s order is like, $45+ or something then we’ll take it but otherwise it’s a no-go

Yeah, get that $$. We weren’t supposed to go into the drop boxes for change, I’d open the safe for larger transactions if that was the ONLY way to pay. But like, case by case basis as long you as didn’t make a habit of it.

But for real, this isn’t a bank. $100 bill for a short coffee, get lost. Earn rewards by using the app so you can save money and not have to break bills at your local coffee shop.

Policy states that we ***never*** open the drop boxes or safe to make change for a customer's order.

They can either enjoy their rolls of nickels, or they can learn to ask for their cash from the bank in $20 bills like the rest of us.

Also, people that are always angry at us also seem to be incredibly stupid usually as well.

The best part is they tell you they have NO other way to pay AT ALL, then when you tell them you can't help them they pull out their credit card.
hecaete47 4 points 2y ago
An SSV taught me to stand firm bc they will always magically have another form of payment!

Is she laundering money? Sounds like it.
Tell her there is a bank down the street. And they will be happy to change her large bills. Watch her die inside
canidieyet_ [OP] 11 points 2y ago
Yeah there’s at least 4 banks in the area. Funny enough one is literally next door to the Sbux i work at. I absolutely wouldn’t be surprised if she was laundering money honestly
jupiter_bug 2 points 2y ago
You should point it out to her and see how she reacts 🤣

The worst part about this is there is actually a coin shortage because of the pandemic. My store had to deal with it for a few months now. Most people use card to reduce the risk that comes with handling cash (you don’t know where it’s been). This lady is a bully, but also horrible inconsiderate. I’m so sorry you have to deal with her. Don’t let her get to you and you got this <3
canidieyet_ [OP] 3 points 2y ago
yeah, our store’s customers are mostly card-only or the mobile app. it literally sucks :(
wtchtrsh 2 points 2y ago
I thought this was policy, but no store I have worked at for years now has enforced it. I find this particularly annoying because my manager always changes the change order to receive like no fives...
canidieyet_ [OP] 1 points 2y ago
no fives?! that’s insane
