pleeeease stop equating diabetes with sugary&higher fat content orders yall(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by apnourry
I realize you guys don’t mean it to be hurtful but I gotta tell ya...it is. It’s ableism. It undermines the struggles that diabetics live with every single minute of every single day. It’s not funny. It’s inaccurate. I didn’t get diabetes from drinking the nasty ass drinks people order. I don’t know anyone else who did. I don’t eat or drink that stuff even now?? I’m not trying to have a debate. I’m telling you it’s something y’all should make an effort to stop doing because there are diabetic children who believe they’re at fault for an autoimmune disease that results in a non functioning VITAL ORGAN. It’s an incredibly difficult life to navigate without the added guilt that this particular misconception can bring. Thanks for reading. Much love yall❤️
capitalismwitch46 points2y ago
Also, type 2 diabetes isn’t just from having sugar either. There’s a huge genetic component to type 2 diabetes. A lot of people could have venti fraps every day and not end up with type 2 diabetes. Some people who have a genetic predisposition for diabetes could end up developing prediabetes or diabetes from having sugar. It’s all so much more complicated than sugar = diabetes.
apnourry [OP]10 points2y ago
YEP.
BastiWestside44 points2y ago
I‘ve been a type 1 diabetic since childhood and work for Starbucks. Thank you for your post, I also happen to crack diabetes jokes at work from time to time but it does sting when healthy young people do that (in front of and behind the bar). The constant feeling of having to explain that I don’t have „fat Diabetes“ is tiring.
apnourry [OP]21 points2y ago
Do people say fat diabetes? Oof..I’m pretty uncomfortable with pushing the stigma&misconception onto others so I usually just shut it down completely. It’s faster that way too haha I don’t want to explain something to someone who just annoyed me
BastiWestside3 points2y ago
Oh yes, they do. I even heard that term (in my native language) from a doctor once.
apnourry [OP]3 points2y ago
I’m glad that person isn’t my doctor then. How unprofessional.
tired-baristaa30 points2y ago
I needed to hear this thank you!!
apnourry [OP]14 points2y ago
thank YOU for being receptive💜
_Pulltab_29 points2y ago
You’re absolutely right. And with both Type 1 and Type 2 in my family, I should know better. Thanks for putting that out there.
apnourry [OP]11 points2y ago
figured if I make people aware, it might help to lessen these types of comments/jokes. I appreciate the response!
hailvy4 points2y ago
Agreed. I have made comments like this and I didn’t realize I was being insensitive
onapapersun15 points2y ago
A little louder for the people in back!!!!!
Not a diabetic at all but it always irritated me when people would blurt out stupid shit like "diabetes in a cup" and i have to correct them and tell them that is completely incorrect. I can see how this can be incredibly invalidating for true diabetics who have an actual autoimmune disease that is out of their control.
Thank you for expressing my pet peeves in an eloquent way.
apnourry [OP]6 points2y ago
Thank you for sticking up for a community even though you’re not a part of it!!
onapapersun5 points2y ago
Anytime. I just hate it when any chronic mental or physical condition gets reduced to simply a character flaw or lack discipline. Diabetes is a serious illness that can potentially kill someone if not recieving proper treatment. Because of this incorrect view of diabetes, its not taken seriously. And then we wonder why insulin is so expensive.
amw197010 points2y ago
As a Type 1 Diabetic myself I applaud your post. From my past experience, the general public have the idea that diabetes is caused by sugar. That elimination of sugar will "cure" us. With Type 1 Diabetes (which is very different than Type 2) we will die without insulin. Period. Regardless of sugar intake. It is heartbreaking that children who live with type 1 hear that something they ate or drank may have ruined their health. When that is just not true. We just live with injections, or pumps & account for the carbs with insulin. The work of the pancreas, just outside the organ. I didn't mean to ramble. This post initially caught my eye with the word Diabetes & Starbucks. I was pleasantly surprised and glad I read it. Thank you ✨
apnourry [OP]3 points2y ago
Thank you for the comment, I’m happy that it’s gotten such positive feedback from diabetics&nondiabetics. I was hesitant to even make a post but I’m glad I did. It’s such a struggle and awareness is the best way to start breaking down the incorrect ideas&attitudes many have adopted about this particular disease!
amw19703 points2y ago
Absolutely. I know the hesitation. Glad you did also.
jae4597 points2y ago
Yes thank you for saying this!!!
apnourry [OP]9 points2y ago
I’ve been meaning to for a while but finally worked up the guts to post it!!
drugihparrukava24 points2y ago
Type 1 here. Thank you, thank you!
Every sub needs to here this--one usually gets downvoted to oblivion when stating diabetes T1 is autoimmune, or that we don't "get" the joke.

Edit: downvote begins from those that can't comprehend diabetes is autoimmune, and nothing to do with metabolic type 2. So to you out there, try to understand there's a movement within the type 1 community to seriously change the name of diabetes (type 1) to something else because of so much misinformation out there. People with type 1 undergo depression and issues at a very high rate compared tot he general population because we're trying to stay alive with a disease that can kill us every time we go to bed. Plus we deal with asshats who make fun of diabetes and think we did this to ourselves. Even hospitals can kill us because their policies cover type 2 and have no idea about type 1 unless we have an endo fighting for us.
Shame on you and may you grow to be a better human.
apnourry [OP]12 points2y ago
I’ve been type 1 for 17 years now!! I’m well past being fed up with them but I’ve only just started to speak up about it. The shame I felt for so long about being seen as like unfunny or uptight for simply sharing my discomfort at these comments has held me back but I’m done!! We deserve better!! From doctors, friends, family, strangers-everyone. As a barista, I will call out ANYONE if I hear them make a diabetes joke.
drugihparrukava4 points2y ago
It's hard to speak up for ourselves--what gets me is the "it;s just a joke". I can't even begin to explain how that is wrong on so many levels. It's their way of defending themselves--a fully functioning adult, or even a child with some sense of good upbringing would understand that they should look at what they're saying, and then examine why it hurts people.
Off my soap box but really, thanks and keep up the good and lonely fight. It's like screaming into the wind sometimes. There's not a lot of us type 1's, but I tend to think we're a good bunch with all the pricks (pun intended) we need to deal with daily.
bryceofswadia6 points2y ago
I usually make jokes about heart attacks resulting from the people who get like 8 shots of espresso or 16 packets of sugar, but I haven’t really made any diabetes jokes. Still, it hadn’t dawned on me those diabetes jokes may be offensive. I’ll try to refrain from them.
apnourry [OP]2 points2y ago
We appreciate the thought!
zydr8te6 points2y ago
How much sugar someone consumes is not my business. I mean technically I need to know to make thier drink, but it's not mine to judge them.
I do wish people who were looking for a better alternative would ask, cold foam is better than sweet cream, but they usually don't and that's okay too
apnourry [OP]7 points2y ago
Not judging/shaming is always a good practice to have
zydr8te2 points2y ago
I have been confused at flavor choices. But the way someone else's body works is none of my business
Lilium8165 points2y ago
As a type 1 diabetic, I couldn't care less.
Honestly. Do it all you want, lol. Every once in a while I may slip in an eye roll and a "tsk-that's not how it works~" but that's it.
Calling it "ableism" seems a bit of a stretch, tbph. I don't define myself through my diabetes. It's something I'll have to live with the rest of my life. If I choose to let little jokes like these upset me I'll live a terribly unhappy life.
apnourry [OP]3 points2y ago
Ok if anyone reads this, I’d advise also reading the comments from diabetics saying hearing this shit does bother them. If it doesn’t bother someone, cool! Good for you! But it obviously does bother other people, and if you can avoid that, by just *not* saying something, wouldn’t you? Super easy!! I’m living a very happy life, but comments made out of ignorance benefit no one🤷🏻♀️
MawcDrums2 points2y ago
No I wouldn't. You don't have the right to "not be bothered" unfortunately.
apnourry [OP]1 points2y ago
Not everyone is considerate, that’s fine. Best wishes
elderpricetag5 points2y ago
I always found it pretty rich when I used to work at Starbucks and baristas would brag about drinking ten shots of espresso a day then go on to criticize the unhealthiness of customers’ choices.
apnourry [OP]2 points2y ago
I say this all the time..healthy for one person in one moment is completely different from healthy for another person at that same moment. I can only speak for my own health, and not try to judge that of others. The irony is certainly not lacking in these situations
sharris7355 points2y ago
shit, i’ve never even realized this could be hurtful. thanks for telling us.
apnourry [OP]4 points2y ago
thanks for being willing to listen!
Lilium8162 points2y ago
Hurtful to some, but not for all.
I was diagnosed when I was 1y/o. It's all I've ever known. At no point in my life did these jokes ever upset me. I was taken care of by my parents and while I do not carry any specific memories of them telling me it wasn't my fault for having it, I never once felt that it was.
ladyamyson5 points2y ago
I have type 1 and always feel self conscious ordering a low carb drink because I feel like I'm judged for being a overly complicated keto diet person but I swear the drinks are actually better for me (well my sugar at least)
apnourry [OP]4 points2y ago
No one has any business to make you feel self conscious about your drink! If you can tell your barista what goes in it, and you aren’t rude there is no reason for any kind of issue!! It is unfortunate that a barista would make you feel like getting a drink that you’ll be paying for is somehow an inconvenience when our job is to make you the drink you want!! I’m sorry!! As for my store I’ve never seen any of our partners express annoyance or negative reactions to people ordering drinks with modifications to fit their specific dietary constraints. It’s super common, and the people making your drinks probably don’t even think about it long enough to form an opinion of what you’re getting and if it’s complicated. ❤️❤️
ladyamyson3 points2y ago
I used to be a barista of 2 years a year ago and had to leave for school but I always felt comfortable getting those drinks from my store but when I'd go somewhere else or even now that I'm across my state they all seem to just give me this look while I'm ordering 😅 I was actually diagnosed after about a year of working there so it was fun to experiment with different recipes to figure out what I liked that wasn't too bad for me
apnourry [OP]4 points2y ago
I don’t understand people who apply for a job and then don’t wanna do it. We make drinks. That’s the job haha..we don’t get to choose other people’s taste in drinks, or the things they can’t consume for whatever reason. Sometimes a drink takes 2 extra seconds of time to make but like I love when people are happy with their drink!! Or when someone asks to make sure I did decaf/sugar free/whatever and I’m like YEP!! I understand needing a very specific thing!! I always am very careful and I want you to get what you order!! Getting to take care of people like that is so fun!
BuffyBoltonVampFlayr4 points2y ago
THIS! THIS! THIS! A THOUSAND TIMES THIS!!!
apnourry [OP]3 points2y ago
I’m so relieved to see how much of a positive reaction this has gotten..thank you🥺
Mkd903 points2y ago
Wow, I never thought about this, thank you so much for your post! I’m really glad you said this, thanks for spreading awareness.
Samm49993 points2y ago
The way that I see it you can comment on the very fact that what they are putting in their body is unhealthy, and still say that prolonged exposure to lots of sugar the way some people get their drinks every morning could make them insulin deficient. You don’t need to say that drinking one venti toasted white mocha frap with extra syrup soy milk and extra frap chips once will give you diabetes.
apnourry [OP]2 points2y ago
It’s really not our place to make judgments about other people, especially based on what they are eating or drinking. We néed to avoid qualifying our unnecessary criticism of others under the guise of being concerned for their health. You will not be “insulin deficient” from what you eat or drink.
Samm49992 points2y ago
That’s not true.
apnourry [OP]2 points2y ago
Bless your heart for saying that with so much confidence.
drugihparrukava2 points2y ago
Insulin deficient, or not making any in our bodies, is a hallmark of type 1 autoimmune diabetes. So there’s no way in hell we are insulin deficient because of food nor drinks. That’s kinda the point we’re all making here.
Perhaps you meant “insulin resistant” which is a hallmark of Type 2?
Samm49992 points2y ago
Yes I’m sorry you are right I meant insulin resistant. But my point is: what we put in our bodies matters.
lea-oppalove3 points2y ago
Thank you for spreading awareness to this, I didn't even realize 🥺
apnourry [OP]3 points2y ago
It’s easy to not be aware of a struggle you do not experience, that’s why I shared💜
MiS_Schuey3 points2y ago
My sister has type 1 and HATES whenever people imply she can't eat something because of it, or that she got it from eating sugary foods. Type 1 is 100% HEREDITARY. I educate people every time I hear misinformation
apnourry [OP]2 points2y ago
It’s a little more complicated than even that haha no one else in my family has diabetes so I’m just unlucky but the misconception about food&diabetes is so harmful!! We don’t police other people’s eating habits, ours are no one else’s business!!
MiS_Schuey2 points2y ago
Yes some of our family members just draw the short draw, unfortunately): My twin (fraternal) sister has it and so far (knock on my wood) my brothers and I have escaped unscathed. I'm sorry that this terrible disease has chosen you. And yes, definitely more complicated than simply being hereditary - I was just trying to emphasize that it has nothing to do with lifestyle. When my sister was diagnosed, we were told that there was a gene that ran in our family that could trigger Type 1. They didn't know what triggered it, but if you had the gene and it was never triggered, you would never get Type 1. Others don't have the gene at all. We were also told the gene could skip several generations before coming back
Lilium8161 points2y ago
It can be hereditary, but I'm the first T1 in my family for **generations**
Some of us just drew the short straw lol
MiS_Schuey1 points2y ago
I've been told it skips generations. This makes sense because the last in my family to have it was my grandfather, and before that it was his grandfather. But still hereditary/genetic and nothing to do with lifestyle
Lilium8160 points2y ago
When I say "generations"
I'm not saying one of my grands had it.
I'm saying the last person on either side of my family to have it was like some great-great-uncle.
Some people just get unlucky, like myself. Actually most people do. Turns out $1
> 100% hereditary
Talk about misinformation
Turns out $1 Up to 50 genes can play a part in the development of t1. Also factors such as climate and exposure to specific viruses can impact a child's risk of developing it.
MiS_Schuey1 points2y ago
This is what we were told when my sister was diagnosed. I did not mean to offend anyone. Although I would consider any relative on any side of your family, regardless of distance, as hereditary. But again, this is the information we were told by our doctor: just because someone can't pinpoint an exact relative that had Type 1 doesn't mean it or genetic predispositions to it don't run in their family.
Edit: There are other "triggers" which may include environmental factors, yes. But traveling to a new climate, for example, won't trigger Type 1 in someone who doesn't have the genes for it. That is how it is hereditary
MawcDrums2 points2y ago
There's massive evidence to overeating of sugar and processed carbohydrates contributing to type 2 diabetes. I understand your contempt for the lack of compassion for the type 1's out there, but ableism? LOL.
apnourry [OP]1 points2y ago
Some people enjoy arguing online. I don’t. It’s a microaggression and therefore ableism. Hope this helps.
MawcDrums2 points2y ago
If you consider having your beliefs challenged to be a microaggression then I'm sorry to say you're going to have a stressful existence. Not every person who disagrees is being ableist or aggressive, they could just think you're wrong.
apnourry [OP]2 points2y ago
not sure what you’re not getting but I also don’t care. wish ya well, bud
JSchnozzle2 points2y ago
Aside from all that, it’s entirely played out and completely humorless. Yawn.
mielmami2 points2y ago
i’ve been type one for almost 15 years and the only thing that bothers me is when ppl say “op she’s gonna go shoot up in the bathroom”
like ... ok
my family does this shit all the time. so fucking annoying
never surprised by it, but definitely disappointed
drugihparrukava2 points2y ago
I was just googling something about how to explain why diabetes (or any illness) jokes really aren't funny and came across this "Diabetes jokes are not funny. They do not offend me. But they upset me." and it just perfectly explains what I'm thinking.
I can't change people nor should I ever try it's not my place, but even if one person reading a thread can learn something I'd be happy.
apnourry [OP]1 points2y ago
That’s a good way to look at it!
obeehunter-1 points2y ago
Well if you have type 2 diabetes then, yes, it's due to your diet. *However*, having said that, it's not as simple as having one too many venti Starbucks drinks. It's having a poor diet and health over all.
Ngl though, we had this 13-16 girl come into our Starbucks (she was 13 when she became a regular and continued to come in). She'd order one super sugary drink or another in a venti, ask for extra syrup pumps, extra whip cream and -I am not making this up- would ask if we could put a little bit of every kind of seasonal sprinkle we had at the moment. . . . Then she'd come back after finishing half her drink and ask for more whip cream again and sprinkles. She probably weighed like 105lbs but we still called her Miss. Future Diabetes .
apnourry [OP]2 points2y ago
Other people’s health is not your business. Unless you are a medical doctor, and a patient is asking for an opinion, it is extremely inappropriate to comment on situations you are not a part of. Type 2 diabetes does not result solely from diet. Please don’t try to qualify judging people by citing a worry or much less a misunderstanding of an illness. Poor diet and health is something many people can have and still be treated as healthy due to a body type, perception, etc. I made a point, and unfortunately you missed it. Hopefully hearing from people who know more, and experience this personally will help you to better understand why the comment is inappropriate.
obeehunter3 points2y ago
I don't care about her health nor was I lecturing her about her sugar consumption.
Never said anything about people who have a poor diet but still appear healthy. Not sure where this is coming from.
apnourry [OP]3 points2y ago
Second part was absolutely me just misreading part of your comment. That’s what I get for replying on my break.
Saying you don’t care about her health is wild to me because you cared enough about it to give a nickname. And to bring her up in a comment. Your misunderstanding of how diabetes (type 2 at that) works is an issue. As is your use of diabetes in a nickname designed based on the contents of a drink. Maybe reread the original post? Wish ya well!
DramaMamma252 points2y ago
sounds like you need to learn more about diabetes :) and ableism :)
obeehunter2 points2y ago
What part am I getting wrong?
DramaMamma252 points2y ago
Type 2 diabetes is not always due to diet. A 13 year old 105 lb girl getting sugary drinks doesn’t mean she’ll have diabetes - you have NO idea how active or how much she eats outside of your store. Just like you said, “it’s not as simple as having one too many venti Starbucks”, so why are you still making jokes and assumptions? People can get hurt by comments, especially those made out of ignorance. I’m hoping other customers or coworkers that heard your “jokes” didn’t have diabetes or family members with diabetes, because you obviously don’t care how it might’ve affected others, and don’t know too much about diabetes.
obeehunter0 points2y ago
We all called her that. I very much doubt she had diabetes and if she did - wow, her parents need to be more involved in her life. We always made her drinks correctly, all of us gave her the extra whip cream (even though technically, we could have easily charged but since she was a regular, we let her have it) and we were never rude to her. Quite the opposite actually. So it's not like we were discriminating against her whether she actually had diabetes or not.
I specifically mentioned her weight to say that she almost for sure wouldn't really get Type 2 because - as I said - it's more about diet over all and general health. Not sure where I've got the wrong information here.
I thought the point OP was making was more about people who either do actually know how debates works or constantly throw the term around indifferently like people who happen to be very organized but say they are OCD.
