Cold brew layers, I've been trying to get the foam to stop sinking to the bottom and this happened totally by accident because I added water over the foam because the coffee was too strong and it immediately formed this beautiful 3 layer... I'm sure that's not the way this is achieved at Starbucks (i.redd.it)

you can also try blending cold foam on 4. It gets thicker/fluffier

I've done this, still sinks and gets very thick like whip cream..

I believe this is a density issue. The cold brew is going to be lighter than the milk. So I mean over time as the foam breaks down the milk is going to sink no matter what. The water for sure is a barrier, as the water will be lighter than the cold brew (my guess being by only small amount) allowing for a buffer between the foam and cold brew. But it will still only delay the inevitable. Guess my main question would be what the desire for the stripes is? Or what is the main goal you’re aiming for?

My main goal is to have that effect because I like the way the unmixed cold brew tastes, I like the foam and the clear cold brew to be mixed as i sip it... I would like it to remain in the layers for more than 1-2 minutes... Without having poured the water, all the foam falls completely to the bottom within one to two minutes, I'm wondering why only when I poured that water over top of the foam did I get the layered effect that comes so naturally when getting it from starbucks

Ahhh ok! Well then that is simple. It’s likely the water is having a slower effect on the breakdown of the foam. Especially if you say used tap or warm water which is going to be closer in temperature to the foam. Meaning that the temperature shift is not as dramatic and prevents the foam from breaking down as quickly. If you’re looking for things to do I would say for sure as you’ve done here the water would definitely help this (doesn’t need to be a lot either. Even like 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch of water might suffice). Additionally anything to help minimize that temperature shift would likewise help slow the breakdown of the foam. So possibly consider doing light, or no ice with it when making it (as it seems like you have some in the picture). Other than that there’s not too much you can do. It’s kind of part of the trouble with foam on iced drinks. It just doesn’t bode as well as warm drinks because the temperature shift is going to cause the micro foam to break down MUCH faster than in that of a hot drink. Hopefully this helps though! Definitely see what others say though, am sure there’s some ideas online about how best to keep foam intact on iced drinks.

Thank you! This has been extremely helpful and definately a hard question to get an answer to, every time I ask I'm told maybe my foam is made incorrectly, but I think there's some miscommunication when ive asked in the past, my foam always sinks not drastically immediately but within 1-5 minutes... I can't believe I've stumbled upon this trick on accident... I had quite a bit of ice in this cup but the water I poured over top. Was bottled room temp... I'm definately going to try this again tomorrow, what happened was I didn't dilute my cold brew enough and found this out after I added the foam... Thanks for taking the time to chat with me 😊

No problem! Am glad I was able to help! Especially since it sounds like I hit the nail right on the head. Makes me feel like I learned a thing or two being a barista for a bit lol. But good luck with your cold brew endeavors☺️☺️

Any suggestions on how to properly get this effect? This happened after I added water over the cold foam because I realized it was too strong.. The foam was sinking right before this
