Sad and happy at the same time (self.starbucksbaristas)

I was working drive thru this evening, and it had finally slowed down after a busy day. A lady pulled up to the speaker, and she said she was having a really bad day and she doesn't come to Starbucks that often, but she wanted to get something to cheer her up and she just needed a minute to look at the menu. I told her to take her time, and offered to help her pick something if she needed. She took me up on that, and I offered my go to happy drink, a basic caramel macchiato. I've had a really hard year and a half, and honestly, that sweetness of the caramel at the bottom has made me feel at least a little better more times than I care to remember. She took my suggestion, and pulled up.

The girl on bar heard her order, and said she was going to put a heart on her lid. I'm glad, because I was thinking the same thing. When I gave it to the customer, she got really choked up and said it had been a really bad day, and thanked us so much for helping her out. I wish I'd had something profound to say that made it better, but without knowing her story, I just told her we've all been there, and that it would all be ok.

I don't know...it's not a great story, but that interaction just really touched me. I know that there are a lot of things that people don't like about this job, but I firmly believe that the best people work at Starbucks. Before I worked here, I had a lot of issues with depression and every time I came in, the baristas cheered me up even though I didn't act like anything was wrong. Now that I do work here, it makes me feel good that I can do that for other people. I hope that lady did feel a little better and like things will be ok.

This is why we are here and do what we do. To inspire and nurture the human spirit. Awesome to hear these stories around here. Keep it up !

It makes a difference, every time. It’s hard to think about that after the 800th customer of the day or the 2nd call off of the shift - but it does make a difference

I agree. Some of the best people are partners. I love the people I work with. They are all like younger siblings to me (I'm the oldest [28M] in our little circle 😂). I get mad and annoyed at them sometimes, but still love them to death. When the team gets along the shifts get easier. Just be kind to whoever you meet and appreciate the partners you got.

That is a great story!!!!
Moments like that made me want to be a partner forever. That was a true moment of human connection and kindness.
Thank you and your fellow partners for cheering this lady up!

Can I just say that in all honesty I don't think Starbucks has the best coffee but the baristas here in Oceanside, CA (College/Oceanside Blvd) are so awesome that I really go just to see them. They have surprised me by learning my name. They smile when they see me. They saved me a red holiday cup when I wasn't expecting one. They let me vent ir share my happy stories when I come in. You never know when your kindness might change someone's day...or even life.

Thanks for sharing! This is a truly great story though :) although this job can be aggravating it’s really really worth it when moments like this happen and we all get to be reminded that we are all human beings. I’m so happy to hear this❤️

I’m not a Starbucks barista, just a fan of y’all! And a lurker of this sub. As someone whose also having a rough year, this story made me cry! Love all the good in this world, even if it’s something as simple as this. You made that woman’s week.

Stuff like this actually makes me wanna get up and go to work in the morning. I’m reminded of why despite everything, I do actually like my job. Good on you guys for being even just a little bright spot in this woman’s day. Lord knows we all need it this year!

There was one time one of our regulars came through, when she got to the box she was fine. But then she said "hold on one second" and next thing we heard she was crying saying her regular drink. I don't know what was going on, but it broke our hearts. We gave her the drink and I wrote "we <3 you!" On the cup. I still think about it all the time. I wonder how she'd feel if we weren't there for her that day.
