If I bothered to answer, mine would just look like "bcs I'm not getting a pay increase since you've capped it, which tells precisely what you think of hourly wage earners"
melodiic_ [OP] 33 points 2y ago
they've capped it?? this is the first time i'm hearing this but that's awful i'm so sorry to hear that
GreenTourmaline13 34 points 2y ago
Yup. There is both a barista pay and shift pay maximum with the "overage"* paid in a "bonus."

*the lump sum bonus is 1/3 what I'd make in a year if I recieved the 10% raise
echowolf9 4 points 2y ago
What did they cap it at?
depressoroast 47 points 2y ago
Plus our leaders are working from home while we are all out in a pandemic. 10% doesn’t cover the risk we are all taking. I’m just one manager but trust me, I feel you all. Even when I was a barista and ssv, I couldn’t believe how little I was paid for how hard I worked. Even now, I am in a major city, my highest paid SSVs makes $2 less than me (if my salary converted to hourly) and would make more than me in a week if she got OT. You guys aren’t the only ones also feeling frustrated.

I work 36-38 hours/per week (and I live in Arkansas, very VERY low cost of living) and I still can’t afford to live in a 2 bedroom apartment and pay for WiFi, water, and electricity by myself. No human working full time should have to rely on a roommate to be able to comfortably live. I plan to go to nursing school in January, so that means even less hours (I tried asu, it wasn’t for me or my major). I don’t want to live frivolously, I just want to be able to pay my bills and buy groceries once every two weeks
quicksilver1349 44 points 2y ago
Yeah sounds about right. Then pushing out a memo about planning on raising pay to $15/hour for all...Only issue is that “plan” takes until 2023, and by that time, taking inflation into account, they can basically pay you exactly what they pay you now. You’d be hard pressed to find a corporation that deceives the public about how shitty they really treat their employees. Maybe Amazon, but regardless, Starbucks doesn’t care about paying us. What I imagine is that they hope that most of the unhappy baristas will find a new job before 2023 as to stop putting up with this bullshit.

Oh man, this question infuriated me. Leaders don't understand my life. No previous generation has had to live like mine, and I guarantee the people making these decisions are not 25.

Ahhhhh my answer to this was a lot of yelling.
Iworkatstarbucks 24 points 2y ago
You make $12/hour? I make less than that...
melodiic_ [OP] 24 points 2y ago
I will after the raise, but keep in mind I also work in the metro area of a major city and cost of living is sky-high here, even in the suburbs
Iworkatstarbucks 7 points 2y ago
That’s fair yea
melodiic_ [OP] 15 points 2y ago
rooting for you to get a fair wage as well!! everyone deserves to be paid a living wage, god knows starbucks can afford it haha
King_Spamula 2 points 2y ago
So do I, but the cost of living is fairly low where I live. I feel bad for those who get paid the same but live in bigger, more modern cities.
eyveggg 1 points 2y ago
I make over $15 & I’m still struggling.😩
DubyaKahled 1 points 2y ago
Same. Starting pay is $9.50 for baristas here in Houston.
asdfghjklugh 1 points 2y ago
What????? Houston is similar to Phoenix and i started at 12
geoguz 16 points 2y ago
Just doing it for the free iPad 😅

Yeah, I wrote something similar. I said something point-blank like: "$9.90 is not close to a living wage." I also write that I don't feel safe at work because duh.
sholbyy 9 points 2y ago
As a former 175er, I gotta say I feel like Sbux is actively trying to push out all the seasoned partners, whether it be with the unfair pay (making the same amount as a new hire after you’ve been there for so many years) or just straight up not giving a shit about how they feel. When I left, it was right after the one other long time partners in our store had also quit, and our SM one day had made this offhand comment about how the “vet employees” always have the most to say and corporate is getting tired of it.

It felt so good putting my two weeks notice in right before the holidays 😊
cush4 9 points 2y ago
On Investor Day they made major announcements to raise the stock price its all about corporate gains. They said they are opening 20,000 more stores, I’m like good luck getting baristas to work at said stores.
juiceyluicy 9 points 2y ago
I make 10/hr and the partners I trained a couple months ago make 10.50/hr. And this “raise” where I am supposedly getting a higher percentage than said new partners is false. They’re just bumping everyone up to the new starting wage and then giving them a 5% raise. So I’m getting bumped to 10.50 and then getting a 5% raise. Because I don’t even make the starting pay. So, I’ve worked with the company for 2 years and make the same amount as all of the other baristas in my store who have all worked there for over 6 months shorter than I have (and most have worked there for only 1 year)...
juiceyluicy 6 points 2y ago
I want to add that the “raise” I got last year was just putting me at the new starting pay...
hotdoghannah 2 points 2y ago
For my district, we were bumped from $9 to $10, so I didnt actually get a raise. I'm making the same as the partner I just trained.
juiceyluicy 2 points 2y ago
Exactly. Until the 14th I still make less than all the partners I’ve trained in the last few months. And my first “raise” was just bumping me up to the new minimum pay. ((:
olddertybasterd 7 points 2y ago
Truth is that corporate doesn't care what you type in because they flat out just don't care. They want to seem like they care, but only as far as asking you that question. They will put on whatever charade they need to to look good to the public and keep up appearances but beyond that, not one fuck is given. The root of it all is $$$. Corporate still makes money hand over fist and stock prices continue to rise, ultimately making shareholders happy.
Agreeable-Shock7306 6 points 2y ago
Honestly I’ve gotten a side gig with Shipt because I’m not expecting Starbucks to do anything any time soon. Every survey though I ask them to allow tips of card purchases
onapapersun 5 points 2y ago
Do you happen to have a link to the survey? I'd like to write a love letter to them as well.
melodiic_ [OP] 6 points 2y ago
it should be in your email! it's titled something along the lines of "your weekly starbucks pulse"
lenagracep 3 points 2y ago
The thing that really irritates me the most about all of this is that corporate is working from home. That does not show at all that they care about the partners.
hotdoghannah 3 points 2y ago
I feel for you. My raise was practically taken away from me! I was making $9/hr before the supposed 10%

Apparently my district increased their starting pay to $10, and so my raise was basically erased. When I said we should keep our raise, my SM said she would talk to the DM (aka nothing is going to change)
Gorbon11 3 points 2y ago
I saw in the news Starbucks minimum wage is going to be increased to $15 an hour within the next 2-3 years
melodiic_ [OP] 15 points 2y ago
"within the next 2-3 years" is the key. they're only raising it because californian state's minimum wage law is gonna force them to. also "within the next 2-3 years" doesn't help struggling partners pay rent right now so that doesn't give me much optimism sadly
olddertybasterd 3 points 2y ago
Florida passed an increase in minimum wage to $15/hour as well. Not sure when it will take effect, but more states are making the decision for them. They're just trying to dress it up like it's their idea and maintain the "good guy Starbucks" appearance.
Santa_Outfitter 2 points 2y ago
I feel for each of you because I saw a very similar issue with a very large private employer while at your career stages, and then saw it again with Amazon. You are correct, that corporate finance has slotted in what they view as appropriate pay and planned acceptable partner turnover. They aren't going to change.

I appreciate the sacrifices each of you have made, ESPECIALLY NOW. Though I can only make a difference in my local stores and market, I salute each of you this holiday season, and as a non-Starbucks employee, THANK YOU. There are people out here who want to do what they can to help and support you.
sugartea63 1 points 2y ago
I dont even quality for the pay increase since i started after august.
Nuhbudyknows 3 points 2y ago
The pay increase is in part intended to reward partners who have been with the company longer, because the longer you stay with one company, the more valuable you are to them as an employee. Without this kind of pay increase for long time partners, there is no competitive pay or incentive to work for the company. That’s why they have limited who qualifies for the increase to partners that have been working longer.
